Australia in flood Fitzroy River in Western Australia rises 11 metres in 5 days!
In late December 2016, the Fitzroy River in Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia reached a moderate flood level of just over 11 metres. When in flood, the Fitzroy River shares bragging rights with the River Nile and Sydney Harbour as one of the worlds largest masses of water. In a matter of just 3 days, the river level at Fitzroy Crossing went from 0.13 metres on December 22 to 11 metres on December 25th. We documented the rise from December 20 to December 25, an incredible sight to see!

Fog at Derby forces diversion to Fitzroy Crossing
Harold Rowell faced an inquisition to explain his reasoning after he had diverted his MMA Fokker F28 (VH-FKC) from fog-bound Derby to Fitzroy Crossing at 3.34am on 30/7/1971. It was a dark winter's night. Fitzroy Crossing's gravel strip had no lighting. The intelligent actions of Nurse Helen Sullivan and Harold's decision to load an illegal extra 800lb of fuel saved the lives of all on board. The aircraft ran out of fuel as it turned off the runway. Harold seemed dogged by unforecast fog, adding Albany, Perth and Geraldton to that of Derby. Thankfully, weather forecasting and reporting has improved since this incident.

This is how we launch boats in New Zealand
So this is not crafting related but it is fun... this is how we launch boats in New Zealand... well on this particular boat ramp in Kaikoura it is.
This is a video I recorded of my Uncle Bill launching his boat to head out to check the crayfish pots when we were visiting with my parents in November 2014. Let's just say it's not the conventional boat on the trailer, back up the truck so the trailer is in the water then back off the boat kind of a launch... it's way more exciting!
Kangaroo swimming across the mighty Fitzroy River in Rockhampton - 6 Dec 2009
Sailing on my brother Peter's boat this morning, we came across and very rare sight indeed. A Kangaroo swimming across the Fitzroy River against the incoming tide. He nearly didnt make it but we sort of mustered him into shore very slowly. By the time we found him he was already 3/4 the way across but then just stopped swimming and floated - so we turned around an assisted by gently guiding him. He successfully made it to shore where he then just sat down and rested.
Cahill's Crossing - The World's Deadliest Crossing
Cahill’s Crossing is one of Australia’s most dangerous bodies of water in Australia. Each year, dozens of cars are washed into the river attempting to drive on Cahill Crossing. It’s an infamous feeding ground for saltwater crocodiles.
It’s a notorious for its croc infested waters and human misadventure. A crocodile once decapitated a man there in front of his friends.
Each year, dozens of drivers attempt to make it across the submerged crossing but instead end up being washed away into the croc infested waters. Others risk their lives by wading in the waters and fishing. Some even bring their children.
Crocodiles frequently congregate at the river crossing, to feast on swarms of fish that head upstream with changing tides. It is referred to as ‘floating fish behaviour’ and up to 40 crocodiles can be spotted together at the same time, a spectacle that attracts big crowds.
The area has become so well known, there are even viewing platforms to watch the crocodile feeding spectacle.
The crossing is popular with tourists and fishermen — despite warning signs that point out an extreme risk of saltwater crocodile attacks.
Yet some people continue to risk — and sometimes lose — their lives. Amateur fishermen, families including children and backpackers have been photographed standing in the water with crocodiles visibly nearby. World leading crocodile expert Grahame Webb says “that for every crocodile you can see, there are “10 you can’t”.
Thanks for watching

This is the fifth episode of Sailing Nandji - We are from South Australia and recently moved aboard our Roberts 40 yacht called Nandji. We have limited sailing experience but believe you can accomplish anything if you are passionate and dedicated to the cause.
In this episode, we set sail across the Whitsunday passage to Hook island to check out some inlets. We hide away from some bad weather in a beautiful little anchorage called Nara inlet. We take the tender out to explore the inlet a little deeper and seek out a waterfall. The weather passes and we set sail out to the Great Barrier Reef. We had some terrible weather followed by some beautiful sunny skys, making for some interesting and boring times on board!

2016 RONA Tribunal - Mardoowarra/Fitzroy River - Pt1
Mardoowarra/Fitzroy River (Western Australia) vs the Federal and WA Governments.
This case was presented by traditional custodians of the Mardoowarra/Fitzroy River and included claims that the River must have its legal rights recognised, in accordance with the traditional custodians’ ‘first laws’ which respect the rights of nature.
