The world's oldest paddle steamer in timetabled operation - PS Skibladner, built in 1856. Operates on Lake Mjøsa north of Oslo in Norway. A leading tourist attraction in the district, she is still powered by a triple-expansion paddle engine and features a plush saloons and a first class restaurant onboard. See also skibladner.no. D/S Skibladner arriving to Hamar on 15.07.2016

A video from the arrival of D/S Skibladner to Hamar on Friday where a whopping 15,000 people had met up on the pier and along the waterfront to greet the world's oldest paddle steamer still in scheduled service, as she made her majestic harbour entry and docked after a sailing from Lillehammer.

This past week, in connection with D/S Skibladners 160th anniversary, the national broadcasting corporation (NRK) has followed all of her voyages on Norway's largest lake by airing live minute by minute from onboard the 1856-built vintage ship and sending direct evening television shows from the major cities.

The enthusiasm around this week's anniversary events has been staggering and far above any expectations. The following day in Gjøvik (yesterday) - the home port of D/S Skibladner - an unbelievable 19,000 spectators showed up to honour the White Swan of Mjøsa, as her nickname is.

I certainly feel humbled to have taken part in this celebration and I wish D/S Skibladner many more successful years as the great pride of Mjøsa. She was the first ever operating vessel to be given an official cultural heritage recognition in Norway and if she continue to receive as much support as she has so far, she will probably stay in service and in pristine condition for at least another 160 years :-)

Skibladner, Mjøsas hvite svane, er det sikreste sommertegnet i Mjøsregionen. Den er verdens eldste operative hjuldamper i rutegående trafikk, og ble bygget i perioden 1854-1856.

SS Skibladner worlds oldest operational paddel steamer sailing on Norway,s largest lake Mjøsa for passenger transport and chartering.
Her keel was laid in 1854 and she has been in traffic across Mjøsa since August 2 1856 to the present.

Omtale:
En film om den gamle hjuldamperen «Skibladner» - en
staselig dame. Egentlig skulle man ikke trodd at
hun står i Guinness rekordbok som verdens eldste
«Oppegående» hjuldamper.
Hvert år gleder hun nye passasjerer, der hun sakte glir over
Norges største innsjø. Båten ble bygget i Motala i Sverige,
transportert i deler til Norge og satt sammen på Eidsvoll.
«Skibladner» som opprinnelig var en forlengelse av landets
første jernbanelinje, og som begynte å trafikkere Mjøsa i
1859. Siden den gang har «Svanen» sunket og blitt hevet to
ganger. Sist vinteren 1967.

Paddle steamer 'Skibladner' departs from harbour

PS Skibladner is the world's oldest paddle steamer in timetabled service, launched in 1856 (56 years before the Titanic). She still plies the waters of Lake Mjøsa in Norway every summer, and is one of the district's leading tourist attractions.
