Da-Parbatia Temple ruins in Tezpur Assam is the oldest and finest representation of architectural splendor. Famous for sculptural or iconoclastic art in Assam in the form of the ruins of the door-frame of the Da-parbatia temple. The stone carvings of Da-Parbatia temple displays the characteristic style of the early Gupta School of architecture sculptures. The two legs of the door-frame have the stone carvings of the two Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna. Both of them are standing at the bottom with garlands in their hands. The whole frame is elaborately decorated with beautiful ornamental foliage.

About This Video-Da Parbatia is a small village very close to west Tezpur, in the Indian State of Assam. In the village there are significant architectural remnants of an ancient temple of the sixth century overlying the ruins of another Shiva temple built of bricks. Archaeological excavations done here in 1924 have unearthed a sixth century antiquity in the form of a stone door frame with extensive carvings. The ruins of the temple built are built over the ancient temple's foundations and are in the form of a stone paved layout plan of the sanctum sanctorum and a mandapa. This complex is under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India and its importance and notability is recorded under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958.

Bamuni Hills is one of the historical place of Tezpur on the bank of the river Brahmaputra.It is believed to be the ruins of an ancient temple as a result of some devastating earthquake.Situated on a hillock,the natural beauty is excellent.The carvings on the walls & pillars speaks a lot about the talent & skills of the contemporary artisans & sculptors.Several pieces of the temple walls & pillars are taken to nearby Chitralekha Udyan & are well preserved.Best place for photography.

The ancient ruins of the Bamuni Hills located in Tezpur of Sonitpur district in Assam is a treat for any archaeology enthusiast. It is located near Tezpur town on the right banks of the Brahmaputra river just near Bhairavi temple. It is believed to be the ruins of an ancient temple site of the 9th – 10th century. According to the constructional plan, it is assumed that there was a Vishnu temple at the centre and four Shiva temples in four corners of the hillock. They were of Panchayatana style. There are also the ruins of an isolated temple on the north eastern side. It is a protected site by the ASI Tezpur sub circle . The carvings on the walls and pillars of the temple speak a lot about the skills and talent of the contemporary artisans and sculptors. The floral and geometric designs are worth mentioning. Several sculptures of animals like crocodile and tortoise are also found. The different avatars of Vishnu are nicely engraved and the piece of slab is still intact. Several pieces of the temple walls and pillars are taken to the adjacent Cole park or Chitralekha Udyan within the Tezpur town and are well preserved. If we go by the dates, the temple belonged to the kings of the Pala dynasty . According to many scholars, these ruins are a result of some devastating earthquake.

Tezpur means town of blood. The story behind this name is that when Tezpur was ruled by Bana Raja, his daughter Usha and Anirudha, grandson of Lord Krishna, fell in love with each other. When this came to the King's notice he sternly objected and isolated Usha in a place called Agnigarh. But when Anirudha tried to take Usha away, there was a war between Lord Krishna and Bana Raja, leading to a major bloodshed with loss of many lives. Study from the history also says that the vicinity of the town has historical ruins of the 8th-9th century like Bamuni Hills. The ruins of Da Parbatia are a shining example of the architecture around the 4th century AD. Modern Tezpur was founded by the British colonial administration in 1835 as the headquarters of Darrang district.

Tezpur is the major commercial cum administrative centre of North Assam. It is also said to be the cultural capital of Assam, with many historical ruins attesting to its past. It is also a major tea and tourist centre of Assam and its scenic beauty is breathtaking, especially in the winters with the snow-capped Himalayas as its backdrop. In view of its hot summers and beautiful winters, the best time to travel to Tezpur is from October to May.
