In the first of our Namibia series we set out from the UK to Windhoek via Johannesburg and then head to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve just outside the capital.

Daan Viljoen Game and Nature Reserve offers the visitor to Windhoek a good selection of local game sightings including the protected Hartmann's Mountain Zebra. One can relax in style, or hike in nature, or cool of in the swimmingpool, or just look at the capital in the warm sunset glow. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Daan Viljoen National Park
Drive through Daan Viljoen National Park with the family.
Daan Viljoen Park can be reached driving down Sam Nujoma Avenue for 18 kilometres from Windhoek. The turn-off is daanviljoen.JPG (14005 bytes)clearly signposted. The park, located amongst hills of Khomas Hochland, is the smallest in Namibia and the nearest to Windhoek.
History. The park was proclaimed in 1962.
The park is very popular as an alternative place to stay instead of staying in the capital and for day visitors.
The rest camp is located on the banks of Augeigas dam has several bungalows, camping site and picnic site for a day visitors.
Wildlife. Several game species can be seen in the park including kudu, red hartebeest, springbok, klipspringer, steenbok, eland and Oryx antelopes, baboons (burglar bars were installed in the kiosk in the vicinity of the restaurant to keep them out), blue wildebeests and giraffes.
As there are no predators you are allowed to leave your anywhere in the park. Bird species: helmeted guinea fowl, red billed francolin, yellow billed hornbill, rock runner. More than 200 bird species can be observed in the park. Bird list can be obtained in the park's office.
Vegetation type of the park is highland savanna. The most common trees are: mountain thorn, camel thorn, buffalo thorn, red bushwillow and candle thorn.
Daan Viljoen Game Park Kudu
Here is the video of a few kudus we saw during our hike. The one came really close and I stopped the video because I thought I'd need to protect myself. We came within about 10 feet of it though.

Trip of a Lifetime - African Adventure (by T3M Tours)
This two-week adventure started in Windhoek, Namibia and ended in Capetown, South Africa. It was led by T3M Tours.
Stops included Daan Viljoen Game Reserve, Epako Wildlife Reserve, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund, Luderitz, the Orange River, and much more. All members of the tour either rode BMW or Honda motorcycles with one LandCruiser as support.
