Buddhist music of Tianjin 天津佛乐, northern China
Buddhist music of Tianjin (天津佛乐), northern China, performed for a large ceremony at the Tianjin Dabei Yuan Temple (天津市大悲禅院), a Chan Buddhist temple in the Dongyuzhuang (东于庄) area of the Hebei District (河北区) of central Tianjin (天津市), an important port city of northern China located about 80 miles east of Beijing. The temple, whose name translates as Temple of Great Compassion, was built in 1658-1659, during the early Qing Dynasty.
Performed by the Yanzi Buddhist Music Troupe (燕子佛乐团) of Tianjin, northern China, which is the musical ensemble of the Dabei Yuan Temple. Although yanzi commonly means swallow or sparrow in Chinese, Yanjing (燕京, literally Yan Capital) was an old name for the nearby city of Beijing, which was the former capital of the Yan state, one of the powers of the Warring States Period during the Zhou Dynasty.
Ensemble staff:
● Honorary/Emeritus Ensemble Leader (名誉团长) - Zhi Ru (智如)
● Ensemble Leader (团长) - Pu Jiang (普江)
● Artistic Director (艺术总监) - Xin Kai (心开)
The Yanzi Buddhist Music Troupe, whose members are Buddhist monks, is essentially a sheng-guan (笙管乐) ensemble, a type of traditional instrumental ensemble primarily made up of winds and percussion that is typical of the ceremonial music of northern China. It features the guanzi (管子, double reed pipe) and dizi (笛子, bamboo flute) as leading melodic instruments, usually accompanied by multiple sheng (笙, mouth organ) and percussion (drums, cymbals, gongs, bell, and yunluo 云锣, a set of ten tuned gongs in a frame). In this ensemble, the winds and percussion are supplemented, in the earlier selections, by a few string instruments, including erhu (二胡, 2-stringed vertical fiddle), yangqin (扬琴, hammered dulcimer), sanxian (三弦, 3-stringed banjo), zhongruan (中阮, round-bodied lute), and daruan (大阮, bass round-bodied lute).
For the melody performed during the street procession, the phrase Namo Amituofo (南無阿弥陀佛) is repeatedly sung; Amituofo is the Chinese pronunciation of Amitābha, the name of the principal Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism, a branch of East Asian Mahayana Buddhism. Namo is a Sanskrit exclamation showing reverence and devotion, which is often placed in front of the name of an object of veneration, such as a Buddha's name or a sutra, to express devotion to it.
Probably filmed in 2014.
