A spectacular seafood restaurant in Pyongyang built at the order of late leader Kim Jong-il has started operations. North Korea ambitiously hopes to make it into a Pyongyang landmark like Ok Ryu Kwan. Let's take a tour.

Pyongyang Daedonggang Seafood Restaurant is built to resemble a ship floating on water. Inside the building there is a huge water tank filled with a variety of fish, including sturgeon and trout. There are also assorted sea creatures like king crabs, turtles, and clams. It provides delicious and nutritious seafood dishes and processed foods made with fresh fish all year round. The restaurant facility appears extravagant as well. Diners can see the fish swimming under their feet through the glass floor. There are luxuriously decorated rooms for families, traditional menus, and sushi. Troops were sent to the restaurant construction following Chairman Kim Jong-un's order to build a facility for the people. Director Kim Su-gil of the General Political Bureau, the highest-ranking officer in the North Korean military, attended its completion ceremony. Chairman Kim visited the restaurant in June, even before it opened, and instructed the workers to make it a Pyongyang landmark like Ok Ryu Kwan. Apparently, North Korea is looking to make full use of the new seafood restaurant to promote its tourism industry, one of the regime's plans to stimulate the overall economy.

요즘 평양에는 고층빌딩이 들어서고 가족단위의 위락시설과 놀이공간이 대거 늘어났다. 우리가 알던 평양의 모습이 많이 변한 것 같았다. 그리고 평양 시민들의 여가생활도 달라지고 있다. 알록달록 원색의 택시들이 물밀 듯 들어선다. 평양시민들이 택시를 타고 찾는 이곳, 올 7월 말에 문을 연 대동강 수산물식당이다. 입구의 커다란 수조엔 물고기가 헤엄치고 있다. “여기 2m 이상 되는 이 물고기는 철갑상어라고 합니다. 철갑상어는 사람 몸 누구에게 좋은 영향을 주는데 이 철갑상어는 28살이나 됐습니다” “우리가 지금 이거 먹는 겁니까?” “잡수시는 것은 어린 철갑상어가 더 맛이 좋습니다. 이거는 관상용으로 우리가 보고 있습니다” 철갑상어 옆 대형 수조에는 조개 자라 해삼 등 식용 어패류가 보인다. 새소리 지저귀는 관상용 수족관엔 칠색송어 연어 등 고급 어종이 헤엄치고 있다. 먹으러 왔다가 눈요기까지 제대로 할 수 있어서일까 아이들을 데리고 온 가족단위 손님들이 많아 보였다. 7월 말 문을 연 이후 하루 1000명 정도의 손님이 찾아온다고 하니 지금 평양 최고 인기식당에 온 셈이다. 우리의 수산시장처럼 회도 뜰 수 있다. “룡정어회국수, 철갑상어회국수 그다음 칠색송어탕, 룡정어탕 이렇게 해서 다 요리를 맛볼 수 있다 말입니다. 원가를 보장 못해도 주민들한테 눅은 싼 가격으로 식사를 보장해주라 해서 여기 2층이랑 3층에 인민들 다 우리 주민들이 들어옵니다. 평범한 주민들이 들어와서 식사를 한단 말입니다” 눈길을 사로잡는 아이들. 북한 어린이들이다. “몇 살이에요?” “4살” “인사 곱게 해 보라요. 인사 곱게” 대동강수산물식당 2층은 슈퍼마켓, 장 보러 온 가족의 모습이 낯설지 않다. 2층은 수산품 가공매장 코너로 특화돼 있다. 표시된 북한 원화가격에 0을 더 붙이면 얼추 대한민국 가격이다. 민물연어 생물은 키로에 우리돈 만원, 털게는 키로에 우리 돈 3,600원인 셈. 남측 취재진들에겐 비교적 저렴한 가격이었다. 모두들 기념으로 이것저것 사본다. 에누리 없이 잔돈 다 받는 계산원에게 짓궂은 농담을 건넨다. “너무 인정이 없습니다, 진짜. 너무 박합니다” 철갑상어알에 요즘 한국에선 가격이 오른 오징어까지 한가득 사니 우리 돈 3만원 정도다.

KBS has obtained footage from members of an organization who visited North Korea last week. They provide glimpses of how people in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang are coping with the hot weather and tight sanctions.

Customers stand in a long line in front of Okryu-gwan, a famous restaurant in the North Korean capital selling Pyongyang-style cold noodles. A restaurant worker shows how to enjoy the noodles by sprinkling vinegar onto the noodles rather than the broth.
[Soundbite] Employee: This way the noodles are more chewy and the broth doesn't lose its flavor.
The taste of the famous noodles has not changed in decades, but downtown Pyongyang is changing by the day. You can see women wearing trendy dresses and high heels, and even carrying sun umbrellas. There are also vendors selling chilled bottled water. Pyongyang schools have modern visual and audio equipment to learn English these days. And then what is this? Students can even use high-tech virtual reality devices. The number of taxis running on roads has also increased noticeably. Although gas prices have more than tripled due to global sanctions, over 2,500 cabs are currently operating in Pyongyang. There are also many trucks that transport goods to wholesale dealers and local markets. When night falls, there are still cars on the streets, while buildings are well lit up with electricity.
