63rd Memorial Day ceremony held at Daejeon National Cemetery
제 63회 현충일 추념식 국립대전현충원에서 진행
Today June 6th, is South Korea's Memorial Day, and a ceremony was held this morning at Daejeon National Cemetery.
Thousands of people were present to remember the sacrifice that soldiers and patriotic martyrs made for the country.
Our Hong Yoo reports on the details of the memorial ceremony. With a sound of a siren and a 21-gun artillery salute, Koreans observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to the fallen heroes who had sacrificed their lives for the nation.
This year's memorial ceremony was held at Daejeon National Cemetery for the first time in 19 years-- the last time being 1999.
The government chose the cemetery as location for the 63rd Memorial Day ceremony to show that it aims to take care of everyone who has died for the nation, no matter what their field.
Daejeon National Cemetery is the final resting place of people from a wide range of fields, from firefighters and civil servants to Dokdo volunteer soldiers and other patriots.
I was serving my military duty during the Battle of Yeonpyeong. So I come here every year to pay silent tribute to my comrades who died on duty.
I came for volunteer work. I thought it would be a significant occasion to volunteer for because memorial day is a day to remember those who sacrificed their lives for us.
Over 120 thousand martyrs, patriots and prominent figures, including one former president, have been buried at the Daejeon National Cemetery, which was established in 1979.
After some performances to commemorate Memorial day, a special memorial ceremony took place this year for the three firefighters who died while on duty last March.
This year's ceremony was titled 428030, In the Name of Republic of Korea, We Will Remember You. The number 428030 represents the total number of fallen heroes buried in the all ten national cemeteries across the country. And like that title, today Koreans remember that the freedom they sometimes take for granted could never have been realized without the sacrifices of the fallen heroes who came before them.

Korea, the Country of Descendants of Independence Activist from Cuba
Azaria Lim was the first student from Cuba to study in Korea. She is a fourth-generation Korean-Cuban.
Korea and Cuba do not have diplomatic ties yet, but Azaria was able to come to Korea with the help of her late great-grandfather, Lim Cheon-taek, who made large contributions to helping Korea achieve national independence. During Japanese colonization of Korea, Lim Cheon-taek lived in hardship with his single mother on a henequen farm in Mexico. He did everything he could to help Koreans in Cuba protect their national identity.
He established a Korean school and taught the Korean language and culture to second-generation Korean-Cubans. Lim Cheon-taek also raised funds for the Korean interim government based in Shanghai, China. His final wish was to visit his homeland before death, but he only returned to Korea seven years after he passed away.
He was buried at the National Cemetery in recognition of his contributions to Korea's independence, and now his granddaughter is pursuing her dreams by studying in Korea.
What does Korea look like in the eyes of an independence activist's descendant? Join us to learn more about the dreams and aspirations of this young woman in a foreign country and the traces of Korea's independence movement

President Syngman Rhee (이승만) declared by presidential decree the plot of land south of the Han River in Dongjak-gu would be set aside as Korea's first National Cemetery. On these hallowed grounds, heroes from Korea's past would be laid to rest and honored for all time. The cemetery rests on over 16 million square feet, making it quite huge for a country tight on space.

국립서울현충원 - Walking around Seoul National Cemetery, Seoul, Korea
The Seoul National Cemetery (Hangul: 국립서울현충원) is located in Dongjak-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, South Korea. When established by presidential decree of Syngman Rhee in 1956, it was the country's only national cemetery. As the cemetery reached capacity in the early 1970s, Daejeon National Cemetery was established in 1976. Both cemeteries had been overseen by the Ministry of Defence (South Korea) until 2005 but in 2006 the Daejeon National Cemetery was transferred to the Ministry of Patriots' and Veterans' Affairs (South Korea).
The cemetery is reserved for Korean veterans, including those who died in the Korean independence movement, Korean War, and Vietnam War.
In August 2005, controversy was stirred by the visit of a North Korean delegation to the cemetery. The delegation was led by Kim Ki-Nam, and numbered 182 officials. The visit not only sparked outrage among those opposed to warmer relations with the North, but also raised fears that a future delegation from the South might be expected to pay their respects to Kim Il-sung in Pyongyang.
The late president Kim Dae-Jung was interred there on Aug 23, 2009.
The Seoul National Cemetery is near Dongjak Station on Seoul Subway Line 4 or Seoul Subway Line 9. Except for some special days, normally, the Seoul National Cemetery allows access to the public.

Korean Burial Mounds in Seoul ????????
Burial mounds surround my Korean elementary school in Seoul. My school is located at the foot hills of the famous Bukhan and Dobong mountains.
Along the mountainside, there are many grave sites belonging to families where they have had many generations buried. Their burial sites are covered with a symbolic mound of dirt.
It might seem creepy to some people, but for me, it's actually a bit comforting. My mother used to say that the safest place in the world is a cemetery because no one can hurt you there.
I feel that the spirits in this area from these burial sites must be happy because they are located near an elementary school where positive, happy energy exists. It must bring them joy, I would imagine.
Steve Miller, AKA the QiRanger, made a video yesterday about a grave site outside of the university he teaches at. It was funny to see his video, not because of the funny commentary he provides, but because I had actually tried recording video of the burial mounds yesterday. My recording session was cut short because of a sudden downpour of rain, so I was never able to finish recording what I wanted to. When I came home, I saw that Steve had recorded a similar video and had already uploaded it. Coincidence!
You should all check out Steve's grave site video here:

Definitely an entertaining and informative vlogger/blogger/podcaster to check out!
