What comes to mind when you think of Gyeongju(경주)?
Gyeongju was the capital of Shilla(신라) Kingdom for over 1,000 years. Thousands of historic buildings and objects have been maintained well throughout the city, truly making it the museum without walls.
In Gyeongju, there's a site called, Daereungwon(대릉원), consist of large tombs of kings in Shilla. There are twenty-three large tombs located here ; the most famous being Cheonmachong(천마총) and Hwangnamdaechong(황남대총). The city is most beautiful in fall with its glorious tints of autumn foliage.

Gyeongju Daereungwon Ancient Tombs is a region of tombs of Silla dynasty, located in Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
It was designated as the 512th historical landmark of South Korea on July 28, 2011.
Across width of 40hectares, 23 of small burial mounds draw a curved line, covered with green grass.
Being neither too big, nor too small, it would rather look like sweet little back hills than tombs.
Burial mounds of Silla millennium, itself looks like a piece of art.
Not only its night view with magical lighting is beautiful, but also the morning view, mixing with the path through a wood, with walking along the open field, Daereungwon is even more refreshing.
The best part of Daereungwon Tombs is Cheonmachong Ancient Tomb, whose inside is open to the public. (The others are not.) It was a big surprise to the world when so many artifacts were found in the excavation of it.
Cheonmachong was titled so, because Cheonmado, a drawing of a white Cheonma(Pegasus) flying up to the sky, was found in it.
Cheonma is carved on birchbark, which had been made into a calf protecting pad for horse riding, the image of an imaginary horse flying through the clouds makes us feel the modern beauty.
The tombs show the complete form of the Wood coffin covered with pebbles mound, which is the unique construction type of Silla, The gold artifacts came into the world, the best work of Silla crowns discovered so far, 出(pronounced Chool in korea)-shaped gold crowns, and belt ornaments, gold rings and so on. It shows the peak beauty of Silla ancient art.

A great place to visit if you want to get away from the hectic pace of major metropolitan cities in Korea. There are plenty of festivals throughout the year. UNESCO Seokuram Grotto and Royal Shilla Tombs Gyeongju, South Korea
Don't bother visiting Seokuram Grotto! Because moisture is ruining the UNESCO once magnificent 8th century statues carved in rock, the entire site is now covered and can only be partially viewed through glass. I understand the why but it is now a big miss and looks nothing like photographs travelers see.

A night stroll through Daereungwon Tombs Park in Gyeongju, South Korea. The music is coming from some speakers in the park; the frogs calls were not from the speakers. The frogs instantly made me think of my mom's love of spring peepers :)
