Dafen... A village of oil painters and artists in Shenzhen, China?
I had no idea what to expect. A friend told to get of at the Dafen metro station in Shenzhen and I would find a cool place. He was quite right.

So the story is, I was exploring Shenzhen's Dafen oil painting village and thought, 'omg I should get an oil painting made of myself for mum!' - great idea at the time. I laugh so hard every time I look at this painting, SO WORTH IT! And yes, it is currently hanging on the mantlepiece at my family home.

Dafen Oil Painting Village Shenzhen China
Last January I went to Dafen Oil Painting Village, It's located in Longgang, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, China. In the early 1990s a group of about twenty artists under the leadership of the painter and businessman Huang Jiang took up residence in this town. They specialised in the making of large numbers of replicas of oil paintings by masters such as Van Gogh, Dalí, da Vinci, Rembrandt or Warhol

Dafen, small village that is full of creativity in arts, mainly paintings. The alleys are populated with their artwork and stuff on paintings. There are shops that are big and some small, paintings do so.
Very talented people living in this small village. This is one of the unique village in China that offers talent and arts.

One of the most popular and enjoyable daytrips from Shenzhen, this village is almost entirely dedicated to painting. Get a self-portrait done or request a freshly-painted Van Gogh or Rembrandt.
Put this on your bucketlist travel.

China Day 6 - Shenzhen - Dafen Oil Painting Village
This was my last day in China and just enjoyed walking around Shenzhen with Leigh Anna. There is no narration to this video, just us walking around the maze that is the Dafen Oil Painting Village. The Dafen Oil Painting Village is filled with artists painting originals and reproductions. So many talented people in one little area! We never made it to Sea World at the end of the day, I had walked about 10 miles each day and I was beat! We ended the day with dinner at Leigh Anna's, and that was a perfect end to the trip!

More than half of the world's oil paintings come from Da Fen in southern China. Located in China's manufacturing hub, Shenzhen, Da Fen thrives on the mass production of art. It exports millions of replicas of Van Goghs, Monets, and Picassos to the world, generating billions in revenue for painters who were once farmers or migrant workers. Dafen Village is an artists community in the city of Shenzhen, China. This video presents highlights of my visits there with my close friend, Brian Li. Brian and I became friends with Fan Jian Jun, an oil painter there. Fan Jian Jun is known for his horse paintings. The photos which comprise this video were taken between 2008 and 2011.

Dafen A so-called Chinese “urban village,” Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world. Not bad for somewhere that until the late 1980s was a largely overlooked and decidedly rural backwater on the periphery of Shenzhen.

Just 17 years ago, Dafen was a rural backwater. Then art entrepreneur Huang Jiang moved in. I needed lots of people to work for me. Here was a whole village, he explains. By applying China's production line techniques to art and training lots of artists, he has boosted the town's turnover to $22 million p.a. Orders come in from around the world.

In Southern China a village of artists are creating copycat paintings from the worlds greatest artists. Van Gogh never sold a copy of his creation ‘Sunflowers’, so how come these guys are?
Taking the younger inexperienced painters under his wing, the self-taught ‘Master’ teaches them with techniques and ideas. One of his young protégées believes that painting has changed his life for the better. ‘Painting was my hobby but there was no teacher in my village, I worked on shop windows and signboards until I came here.’ He resigned from his job in a Wal-Mart supermarket to make a go of it as a street painter. ‘I saw you could make money painting, I have nothing else to do in my free time.’ The artists copy from books and photographs to produce some stunningly accurate and realistic art replicas. A light-hearted film which gives us a backstage pass to the world of ‘copy-culture’ in China.
