Daintree Rainforest Observatory Science Camp (Cairns State High School)
Blog post:
A few days ago I was in the Australian rainforest for 4 days. We had the opportunity to stay in a working research station of James Cook University and learn a lot there. In the research station live scientists, technicians and a cook. The station has, among other things, its own water and electricity supply and a large crane with which it is possible for scientists to do research at a height of 50 meters. On the way there we drove to different viewpoints and made a small hike to Mossman Gorge. This gave us a first impression of the fauna and flora. After our arrival, we got a safety briefing, because there, in the free nature, you can meet poisonous and other dangerous animals. The evening ended with a campfire. The next day we programmed heart rate monitors, got information about the orientation and aerodynamics of bats and then set up bat traps. In the evening we could admire three different bats. After a wonderful breakfast in the morning, we left for Jungle Surfing. This means that you slide through the rainforest on a rope slide. After we were back we got a lecture about fireflies and soldered LEDs and other components with an Arduino on a board and programmed the Arduino so that the LEDs blink like fireflies. In the evening we put our components into bottles and shot them with a gas cannon into the night sky. Actually, it was planned for the next morning to use the crane, but the wind was unfortunately too strong. Instead, we fished insects out of a pond, looked at them under a microscope and did another small hike. We were lucky to see a Cassowary. After lunch, we drove home. During the whole camp, I was able to get in contact with Australian students. We played many board and card games and enjoyed the sunrise. Overall the camp was a great experience and I could see another important part of Australia.

Like stepping back in time...
Daintree National Park, Australia
Daintree National Park is in Far North Queensland, Australia. Daintree is about 3 hours north of Cairns, 1-2 hours north of Port Douglas. It is much quieter than either Cairns or Port Douglas, owing to the distance, crossing the Daintree river (a ferry may take cars and buses across, for a toll), conservation efforts and being off the power grid. The Daintree region is currently in flux regarding conflicting demands of population and economy growth and preservation of the spectacular natural environment.
The quiet environment makes for a very pleasant, laidback tropical stay, somewhat distanced from the mass tourism of Cairns and Port Douglas although Cape Tribulation is a popular daytrip for visitors and amenities for tourists abound.
The park consists largely of broadleaf lowland tropical rainforests and upland tropical rainforests, although there are also significant mangrove and fan palm communities. The rainforest is an amazing array of biodiversity. Look out for the cassowary, a large non-flying bird with a helmet growth on its head to protect it as it runs through the forest. Of course, as with all of far northern Australia, saltwater crocodiles are present.
It's easiest to get around by car, but buses run from Cairns and Port Douglas all the way up to Cape Tribulation. Many companies offer packages of accommodation and transport to the area. Some of the hostels rent bicycles which is a pleasant way to get around Daintree Village and see the sights while you're there. The ride from Cow Bay to Cape Tribulation is about 25 km each way and a nice daytrip, although a bit hilly in the Noah Range area. The road is sealed all the way to Cape Tribualtion and all rental companies allow cars to travel as far as the Cape.
There are crocodiles in the Daintree River and other creeks in the region. Sometimes the riverbed will have a warning sign, but not everywhere. Stay away from the shore of the river and other creek beds.

Hey guys,
This is a 3 day trip on how to do Northern Queensland, Australia in style. First, we land at the Cairns airport and drive up to Port Douglas. Then we head even further North to the tropical Daintree Rainforest. There we have a swim in a nearby billabong (river bend). Then Jenna Rumney shows us around their tropical fruit farm. We see bidiba, breadfruit, miracle fruit, annona, jackfruit, bananas and more. Coconut ice cream is GOOD.
The next day we go snorkeling with Calypso Reef Cruises. These guys were great. We see amazing coral, turtles, fishes and a lot more cool stuff. Also, we learn a lot about the history of the Great Barrier Reef. V and Shannon do express to me later on how much climate change has affected the GBR. It used to be much different, alive and vibrant. This deeply saddened me.
The next day we went Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarding on the Mossman River with four dogs. On a hot afternoon, there is nothing better than jumping in that cold water and splashing around. Jenna even has a howling session with one of the dogs.
Then we pack up and do a quick and short tour of Cairns, Australia. Checking out the free public barbecues and the helicopters. It's amazing.
Finally we fly back to the Gold Coast of Australia. If you stick around until the end, you'll hear a message from an important leader in the effort to save the Great Barrier Reef, John Rumney.
