The Dairy Barn is an arts center that was converted from a real dairy barn which was originally a part of the Athens Insane Asylum built in the 1800s. The state asylum included orchards, a working dairy, and its own cemeteries.
Most of the area is now called The Ridges and was given to Ohio University by the state when the mental health hospital was shut down. The Dairy Barn was saved by citizens and turned into an arts center. It is the site of Quilt National, displays many art exhibits throughout the year, includes a gift shop, and includes a space for teaching art classes. It is very much a part of the Athens culture.
This video is just an effort to show the tranquility of the building and the landscape at the edge of Athens, Ohio, a small college town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
History of Dairy Barn Art Center.mov
This video is the history of Dairy Barn Art Center and its development.
The barn structure was built in 1914 as part of the Athens State Hospital.
It was originally a one and a half story building, with the ground floor containing stalls and the loft acting as a hay mow with a great domed ceiling.
The barn was 200 feet long and 35 feet wide, with a total of 14,000 square feet of usable floor space.
The barn cost $10,000 to build and was intended to hold forty head of Holstein cattle.
The barn was part of a complex of seventeen farm buildings which included a two story brick dormitory for patients who worked in the dairy barns and a two story house in which the herdsman resided.
The dairy barn employed one herdsman, two employees, and thirty-one patients as part of therapeutic and job training programs. It supplied all the dairy needs of the mental institution as well as providing feed for the dairy, poultry, swine, and beef operations.
Under herdsman Homer Gall, Sr., who took the job in 1918, the dairy farm became an innovative showplace of Ohio animal husbandry.
In the 1920s Gall was instrumental in having all state institution herds in Ohio tested for tuberculosis and tested and vaccinated for brucellosis.
Also through his efforts, the first Ohio state institution calf from an artificially inseminated cow was born July 4, 1940, at the Athens State Hospital dairy farm.
Herd improvement efforts through selective breeding produced world champion cows such as Lotta Fayne Korndyke, the 1931 World's Champion Milk Producer, who produced 30,501 pounds of milk in one year.
The dairy barn was home to other milking champions, as well as to bulls Athens Balsam Arab, the 1955 National Reserve Grand Champion, and Colony George Heilo, a National Gold Medal sire.

“Each of these quilts is a demonstration of the creativity and artistic talent of its maker,” said Nan Card, curator of manuscripts at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. “Infused with vivid colors, a myriad of fabrics and unusual techniques, each quilt holds special meaning for its creator and often provokes thoughtful responses from the viewers.”

Day 1 of the New Year - Hocking Hills, Ohio, 2012
This was footage taken on the first and second day of the new year during a camping trip to Hocking Hills State Park with my sister, Caroline Tompkins. It was a trip both of us needed, but neither had planned--until we were loading the car up at 5 in the morning. We had packed little for food, so after a day full of hiking and exploring, we stopped at a local grocer/souvenir shop, scrounging up sweet potatoes, vegetable soup, dinosaur spaghetti-o's and the makings for smores. Using the remains of a trail mix bag as our bowl, we shovelled all the ingredients into one, taking turns enjoying the warmth of a fire and canned food on a cold night. After stealing away to the tent with the last remains of vegetable soup, we killed the flashlight and bunked down. With a snowless winter behind us, we awoke to a surprise when bits of snow piles had collected in the creases of the tent, silhouetted by the dull sun. It was the perfect way to start the new year. I hadn't set out to record any video, but I'm glad I did, for the mind forgets too easily how great life can be. Thanks Caroline. I miss you.

Quilt National '15: Diane Núñez
This Gallery Talk segment features Diane Núñez from Southfield, Michigan. Being a landscape architect highly influenced her quilt and much of it appears on the floor of the gallery. Many visitors have asked how her quilt is actually a quilt and the answer is each individual strip of the piece acts as an individual quilt. Very creative.
