Miyajima in Cherry Blossom Season Part 2 - Daishoin ???? 宮島の大聖院 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
On Miyajima if you only saw the floating Itsukushima Shrine and missed the Daishoin temple, you're cheating yourself.
Daishoin is one of the biggest in western Japan, and unlike so many other places, it actually injects a little humor into the place.
In the Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, Daishoin is #14, and it was established by Kukai in 806 A.D. It's on Mt. Misen and was visited by the Dalai Lama in 2006. It's one of the few exquisite temples in a popular tourist area that is actually free to enter.
If you missed the first part of this Miyajima series, see Miyajima in Cherry Blossom Season Part 1 here:

Daishoin Temple, Hagi Yamaguchi - 大照院山口県萩市 - Japan As It Truly Is
Daishoin is one of two huge temples used by the Mori Clan of Hagi (Choshu). It shows the enormous power they wielded.
Additionally there is also the Tokoji Temple nearby that complements Daishoin and used for the other half of the family. The Choshu domain would later be one of the prime actors in overthrowing the Shogun and restoring direct rule to the Emperor in 1868. It also had considerable influence on the Japanese government and new army well into the start of the 20th Century.
Daishoin has its roots going back to a previous temple there built at the end of the 8th Century, and in the 1600s the Mori Clan took over with every other generation buried in the family graveyard. After a major fire, the temple was rebuilt in 1750.
This video shows the temple at the peak of the cherry blossom season, which is one of the best times to visit it.

Miyajima in Cherry Blossom Season Part 1 - Itsukushima Shrine ???? 宮島●厳島神社 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Miyajima with its Itsukushima Shrine is one of the greatest sights of Japan and will give you a truly unforgettable experience.
Besides Tokyo and Kyoto, Hiroshima is one of the most popular tourist places, and Miyajima is the jewel of the region.
Itsukushima Shrine goes back to around the 6th Century, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The floating torii gate in the water is regarded as one of the 3 Great Views of Japan, and is 16m high and 24m wide. It has been rebuilt 7 times over the centuries, and the current 8th one was erected in 1875.
NB: From June 2019, for at least a year, the big torii gate will be undergoing renovations - it will be covered by scaffolding. For some, seeing the torii in the water is the highlight of the visit, so plan accordingly - and see it here if you can't make it in time.
This footage explores Miyajima at the height of the cherry blossom season, which is one of the best times to see it. Also included here is the Daiganji Temple, plus Omoto Park and shrine exploding in sakura blossoms.
But you would be severely shortchanging yourself if you only saw Itsukushima Shrine and then left Miyajima - be sure to continue on to Part 2 to see Daishoin, one of Japan's best temples nearby.
Hiroshima also has a number of very good sights - much more than just the Peace Park - so be sure to watch the Hiroshima Playlist:

Miyajima in Cherry Blossom Season Part 3 - Misen/Senjokaku/Itsukushima ???? 宮島 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Miyajima - Come view the panorama from atop Mt. Misen, the huge Senjokaku Hall, and Itsukushima Shrine as few have seen it.
Mount Misen is a sacred mountain that has spectacular views of the Seto Inland Sea and you can hike all the way up or take a ropeway partway. You can also see the Itsukushima at low tide, when you can walk on the beach to the giant 'floating torii'. This part is free, and you only pay to walk through the shrine itself. The shrine is one of the famous Three Views of Japan. At the entrance they post both the high and low tide times - if you can see both, you are very blessed.
Senjokaku, or the Pavilion of 1000 Tatami Mats was started by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a Buddhist library, but he died in 1598 before its completion, and Senjokaku was never finished. There are many very old paintings hung on all the walls. You will need to take off your shoes after paying the entrance fee to go in.
NB: From June 2019, for at least a year, the big torii gate will be undergoing renovations - it will be covered by scaffolding. For some, seeing the torii in the water is the highlight of the visit, so plan accordingly - and see it here if you can't make it in time.

Daisho-in Temple (大聖院), one of the most important temples of Shingon Buddhism, is located at the base of Mount Misen, on the island of Miyajima in the Seto Inland Sea. This is where the sect's founder, Kobo Daishi, first began the practice of Buddhism on the island of Miyajima.
Within Daisho-in Temple, visitors can admire a variety of buildings, statues and other religious objects. Among these are the Kannon-do Hall, the Maniden Hall, a sand mandala made by visiting monks from Tibet, a tea room and a cave filled with 88 icons representing the temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
Visitors have a chance to perform an interesting Buddhist ritual while walking up the temple's steps. Along the stairs, visitors can find a row of spinning metal wheels that are inscribed with sutra (Buddhist scriptures). If one turns the inscriptions as one walks up the stairs, it is believed to have the same effect as reading the inscriptions. So, without any knowledge of Japanese, one can receive the blessings that the reading of sutra is believed to provide.
From Daisho-in's Temple grounds, there is a hiking trail which leads to the summit of Mount Misen, where a few more temple halls are located. The ascent takes about 1.5 hours.

A Journey to Daishoin
Founded in 806 AD, the Daishoin Temple lies near the foot of Mt Misen on the island of Miyajima in southern Japan, less than an hour south of Hiroshima. Even though it's not as well known as it neighbor on the island, Itsukushima Shrine, the benefit is that there are far fewer tourists willing to take the short hike up to the base of the mountain.
There was snow on the ground the day I was there and the lack of tourist activity allowed me to immerse myself in the peace and serenity of the ancient Shingon Buddhist temple. I could have spent days there.

Japan in 2 minutes: Miyajima Daisho-in Temple 宮島 大聖院
I visited this temple in late November. The autumn leaves surrounding the temple buildings were at their best. Walking up the stone steps, I really enjoyed a great view of the inlet.

Miyajima Great Torii - 宮島大鳥居 - 4K Ultra HD
Miyajima Great Torii - 宮島大鳥居 - 4K Ultra HD : Constructed in 1168, the first Torii of Itsukushima Shrine is maybe one of Japan’s most famous Torii and actually represents the boundary between the spirit and the human world.
While many of you may have had the chance to see the Great Torii in person, we bet that not many of you knew that the Great Torii is not buried deep into Miyajima’s beach, but instead stands with its own weight! And its vermilion color is considered ideal for keeping evil spirits away!
