Two C19 Kutani Vases
I've long been fascinated and collected C19 Japanese Kutani ware, which we first hear of in the village of Kutani (nine valleys) in 1655.
I have selected two vases for this video - the painting of the first is of a far higher quality, but the second has some beautifully arresting images, such as the bird which boldly stares out at the on-looker.
I read:
Kutani ware (九谷焼 Kutani-yaki?) is a style of Japanese porcelain first established by Gotō Saijirō, a member of the Maeda clan, who set up a kiln in the village of Kutani (now part of the city of Kaga) on the order of Maeda Toshiharu, ruler of the Kaga domain. The porcelain style is known for multiple colors—such as greens, blues, yellows, purples, and reds—and bold designs covering most of the surface of each piece.
The first time we hear of porcelain from the Kutani (nine valleys) Village, was in 1655, in the first year of the Myoreki epoch. Japanese ceramic history has it that stones suitable for porcelain making was found in the Kutani mine of the Daishoji Clan, whereupon Lord Maeda Toshiharu sent Goto Saijiro to the Arita Village in the Hizen province to learn how to make porcelain. Kutani Porcelains from this early period are specifically called Ko-Kutani and are extremely rare. The production of this ware continued for about 50–60 years. Kokutani enjoyed popularity for the next few decades until the Kutani suddenly closed down in 1730. The reasons for this closure are debated.
Theories put forward include that supplies of the pigments necessary for the glazing were difficult to find, or that there were financial difficulties. This period of production is now referred to as the Old Kutani (古九谷 Kokutani?).
In 1810 - some 80 years later - kutaniyaki was re-established, with the help of several kamamoto or production potters. New overglaze painting techniques from various kamamoto-es were infused in the development of kutaniyaki. 6 different overglazing techniques dominate the new form of kutaniyaki: the Mokubei style, influenced by Chinese ink painting techniques. The colours of green, yellow, purple and dark blue form the basis of the Yoshidaya style. Contrasting the Yoshidaya is the Eiraku style, with its simplistic coatings of gold on the first coat of red colour. The Iidaya style, or the Hachirode breaks away from the conventional nature-themed kutani style, with minute paintings of human figures on a red - gold mix background.[6] The Shoza style is a blend of all four techniques of overglazing.
A memorial to Gotō has been erected near an old Kutani ware kiln in the city of Kaga. The style of producing Kutani was named a traditional craft in 1975. There are now several hundred companies which produce Kutani ware.

Yamanaka shikki is the lacquerware craft of Yamanaka Hot Spring, Kaga city, Ishikawa prefecture. The origin of this craft is around the 16th century, when a group of craftsmen moved to the area of Yamanaka Hot Spring. The skills of these craftsmen, with years of experience and good materials eventually created the foundation of wood carving and wood lathing techniques in the area. Yamanaka lacquerware is produced by specialists who are experts in their field. Divisions, such as wood cutting, carving and lathing still exist in the same town. These specialized skills are passed down for generations and contribute to the high quality of traditional lacquerware made in Yamanaka today.

Born in Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture, Tanaka has been interested in ceramics and lacquerware since high school, and majored in lacquer art at university.
After graduating, she studied for two years at the Ishikawa Prefectural Yamanaka Lacquerware Industry Technology Center and the Grounding Sawmono Potter's Wheel Technical Training Institute.
After that, she volunteered to become an apprentice to Yamanaka Lacquerware Kijishi's Mr. Torao Nakashima, who was a lecturer at the training center, and became an apprentice at the age of 24.
After five years of training, she became independent as Yamanaka Lacquerware Kijishi, and is working hard every day to acquire more advanced skills. In 2012, she held an exhibition of works in New York.

2017年12月21日，服役才8个月的“加贺”号直升机航母就进入位于吴市的船坞准备维修，服役不到一年就维修，这在全球都是极为罕见的事。“加贺”号是日本海上自卫队继2015年3月“出云”号服役后，拥有的第二艘直升机航母。 “加贺”号此次入坞维修很有可能有两个原因： 一、“加贺”号出现质量问题; 二、进行升级。

مضى اكثر من ١٣٠ عاماً على تأسيس معمل KUTANI CHOEMON في مدينة ايشيكاوا اليابانية ولازال العاملون في هذا المعمل متمسكين بإدواتهم التقليدية لصنع الخزفيات (االخزف يشمل الفخاريات، البورسلان، السيراميك الصناعي والقرميد وغيرها) كالاواني واطباق الموائد والاكواب. في هذا المقطع يظهر لنا عمليه طلاء الاطباق الفخارية والابداع التشكيلي بها.
اما مدينة ايشيكاوا اليابانية فهي تشتهر بصناعه الفخار، وهذا المعمل الصغير الذي تأسس في عام ١٨٧٩. انتج الكثير من المنتجات حتى انه تم تكريمه من قبل امبراطور اليابان مرتين نظراً لدعمه للحرف والتراث المحلي لليابان عموماً وللبلدة بوجه التحديد. وايضاً هناك تعاون كبير بين هذا المعمل وشركات عالمية كبرى كا شركة بوما وغيرها. المعمل حالياً بعد طول هذه السنوات تحت ادارة الوريث الخامس السيد Masahiko Kamide.
ABOUT MANUFACTURER:
“KUTANI CHOEMON” was founded in 1879 in Ishikawa, Japan. They have been making tableware and tea ceremony utensils for over 130 years in an integrated system of production from raw material to finished products. Although they are small on a business scale, every piece of work is carefully handmade and hand-painted by experienced craftsmen. The products feature rich blue and white colors and traditional Kutani color glazes.
HISTORY OF KUTANI CHOEMON
Kentaro Kamide(1930-), the fourth heir of KUTANI CHOEMON made a great contribution to society and culture through his work activities, and received two awards from the emperor. In continuing to make traditional Kutani pottery, they have also poured our efforts in making customized products. In 2007 in collaboration with the Sportlifestyle brand PUMA, they made “PUMA 8-Speed Urban Mobility Bikes” decorated with Kutani pottery, produced by MARUWAKA-YA. Since then, they have been seeking new possibilities for Kutani pottery, and are exhibiting our products at museums; contemporary art galleries and design fairs. The “SCULL, Candy Jar” which they made together with MARUWAKA-YA in 2010 was exhibited at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and later put into the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa as part of their collection. In 2010, the KUTANI CONNEXION exhibition organized by SPIRAL (Tokyo), the novel Kutani world full of free imagination and humor was exhibited under the direction of the sixth heir Keigo Kamide(1981-). In the same year in DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2010, a new Kutani pottery “JAIME HAYON x KUTANI CHOEMON produced by MARUWAKA-YA” was released in collaboration with the Spanish designer Jaime Hay?n under the direction of the fifth heir Masahiko Kamide(1951-), who is the current president of KUTANI CHOEMON.
WHAT IS KUTANI POTTERY:
Kutani pottery is one of the representative traditional crafts of Ishikawa. It is a porcelain product that features glazes using 5 traditional Kutani colors (red, blue, yellow, purple and green).
The history of Kutani pottery dates back to around 1655 in the early Edo period. It was first made by the order of Toshiharu Maeda, the first feudal lord of the Daishoji Clan, the branch of the ruling Kaga Clan in the area. Its bold design, brushwork and fine painting still attract many people today. However, the Kutani kiln was closed down abruptly in around 1710. The reason is unknown even today. 100 years later the kiln was opened again and run by the Kaga Clan, inviting many craftsmen and designers from Kyoto and Edo (former Tokyo) and producing various styles of Kutani pottery. Free-spirited nature of Kutani has been handed down over generations up until to the present time.

戦国時代に於ける乱世の茶の湯でなく徳川家康が日本をまとめた治世への御茶道・御数寄屋をすすめたことです。
堺衆の武器商人の茶の湯と徳川幕府時代の日本茶道は大きく変わり而今、そのことが解明されつつあります。しかも、山梨で見つかった茶壺道中は大発見で、新しい茶道史の始まりを予告しました。
