Tori no ichi is...
It is originally a festival held on Tori no hi (Otori Shrine) in November at Otori Shrine (Odori) in various regions, and it is held at temples and shrines in Kanto region that have transferred the divided tutelary deity of Otori Shrine.
The 10th day fair of Hikawa Shrine is sometimes called Otoshi no ichi because it has nothing to do with Otori Shrine, but it is described as Tori no ichi in the shrine's brief.

-- PRESENTATION: TENJIN SHINYŌ RYŪ JŪJUTSU --
The founder of this school Iso Mataemon Ryūkansai Minamoto Masatari, after mastering at the highest extent the secrets of Yōshin Ryū and Shin no Shintō Ryū, started to travel through the country and faced the headmasters of each clan without being ever defeated.
After many years of experience, when he was retired at the Kitano Tenman-gu sanctuary in Kyoto to compile his researches, he had a great revelation while he was watching a “Yōryū” willow bending under the wind. He founded his school and named it “Tenjin Shinyō Ryū”, by using the name of Tenmangu’s divinity, “Tenshin” (the spirit of Michizane), and by picking one character out of each school he used to practice before: “Shin” and “Yō”.
At the end of the Shogunate, he was teaching to over 5,000 students, and among 170 schools of Jujutsu, his claimed to surpass the others by far, and the warriors of numerous clans were competing to train there.
At the beginning of the Meiji era, in 1877, the founder of the Kōdōkan Jigorō Kanō Shihan passed the gate of Shihan Fukuda Yanosuke’s house to train there. In 1879, when the master passed away, it’s Iso Masatomo (3rd generation) who took over, and in 1882 Jigorō established the Kōdōkan.

Takenouchi Ryū was founded by Takenouchi Nakatsukasa Tayū Hisamori, lord of Ichinose Castle in Hagagō in the Mimasaka Province (present Okayama Prefecture). It is said that he received the initial Toride Gokajō (restraining techniques) and the Koshinomawari Kogusoku (grappling techniques with small weapons) from the gods.
During the 6th year of the Genna Era (1620), Hisamori’s son Hisakatsu received from Emperor Gomizuno-o the title of Hinoshita Toride Kaizan (“Creator of the Toride on this Earth”). This title was renewed for his own son Hisayoshi by Emperor Reigen in the 3rd year of Kanbun (1663), with the authorization to use from then and forever the name Tōichirō. The curriculum of the Takenouchi Ryū was formulated and completed under those three masters.
For more than 400 years, the Takenouchi Ryū has seen the creation of 30 or so branches and instructed a myriad of disciples. It has been preserved and transmitted to the present day.

Event: Meiji Jingu Kobudo Demonstration 2018
Date: 03/11/2018

-- PRESENTATION: TATSUMI RYŪ HEIHŌ --
It is said that the founder of Tatsumi Ryū, named Tatsumi Sankyō, was a military commander from Iya (North-West of Shikoku) at the beginning of the 16th century. He was passionate about Bujutsu since childhood, and took part in countless battles and sword fights, without ever being defeated. However, concerning the spirit beyond technique, and since it was not yet enough to reach the mental state of ataraxia, he went to pray at the Tsumayama sanctuary, where he finally had a great and sudden illumination. It is said that he reached the serene state of “Muga” (“non-self”), understanding how to win without being offensive, and he founded Tatsumi Ryū after achieving the fundamental principles leading to complete victory.
Regarding practical techniques, Iai and Kenjutsu are the core; then came the general Bujutsu such as grappling, spear (Yari), staff (Bō), Naginata, Shuriken and the art of ropes. Then it extended to horseback archery, basic knowledge of the battlefield, scouting, surveying, strategy, and armors.
During the Edo period, under the influence of the leading Sōke, the school was transmitted strictly within the Hotta clan of Shimosa-Sakura, as a martial art that should not get out of the clan. In keeping with the old customs from before the Edo era, the precious practice of the school was faithfully transmitted until today, thanks to fifteen original volumes, ancient documents, oral transmission and the like.
In Chiba Prefecture too, being aware for a long time of the worth of this cultural asset, the late Katō Taka Sensei appointed Katō Hiroshi Sensei as the holder of that intangible cultural heritage.

Date: 03/02/2019

-- PRESENTATION: KURAMA RYŪ KENJUTSU --
It is said that the Kurama Ryū comes from the Kyōhachi Ryū, a martial style associated with a legendary warrior named Kiichi Hōgen. The school was founded during the Tensho Period (1573-1592) by Ōno Shōgen, a man whose martial lineage is unknown.
Kurama Ryū’s 15th Headmaster was Shibata Emori, a direct retainer of the Shogun. The school found a second wind under him: he received the Menkyo Kaiden (full mastery) license at the age of 18, he witnessed the Meiji Restoration (1868) at 19, and in 1879 he became a Gekken (ancestor of kendo) instructor for the Yotsuya Police department (Tokyo). He opened the same year the Shūseikan Dojo in Yotsuya where he taught several disciples.
The wooden sword used in Kurama Ryū is very thick. Its shape is called “Hamaguri-ba”, or “clam-edge”. Another characteristic of the school is the very spirited vocalisations used during the fight.
The first series of 3 kata is called Mokuroku no Koto and focuses on basic techniques. The second series of 4 kata is called Kuden (Oral Transmission) and teaches advanced techniques like counter attacks. The school also features 5 Iai kata: Ichimonji, Mune no Kurai, Modori Uchi, Jōdan and Jizuri.
The Shūseikan Dojo was destroyed during WWII. It was rebuilt in 1989 by the 17th Headmast, Shibata Tetsuo. The Shūseikan is one of the oldest private Kendo Dojo of Tokyo. The Shibata family have preserved the Kurama Ryū and its Dojo for 4 generations.

-- PRESENTATION: SHINTŌ MUSŌ RYŪ JŌJUTSU --
This school’s name can be pronounced Shintō Musō Ryū as well as Shindō Musō Ryū Jōjutsu. It was founded by the famous Musō Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi at the beginning of the 17th century after he studied for a long time to find a way to defeat the sword with a staff.
The specialty of that school is to use a combination of Tsuki (thrust), Harai (sweep) and Uchi (hit) techniques, using both sides of the staff equally. The movements are carried on continuously and should adapt to the opponent's movements and attacks naturally as if the Jo was a part of the practitioner’s own body. That way, it becomes possible to knock down the opponent’s weapon.
Mr. Matsui Kenji, who is leading this demonstration, possesses a Japanese Menkyo of the Fukuoka line of the Shintō Musō Ryū, along with a Menkyo of Asayama Ichiden-ryū. He was a student of Takaji Shimizu and Ichizo Otofuji. He is also a scholar and author of several works on Shinto Muso Ryū’s history and lineage.

-- PRESENTATION: ASAYAMA ICHIDEN RYŪ HYŌHŌ --
That school was founded by Asayama Ichidensai Shigeaki, who was apparently from Usui, in the ancient province of Jōshū (which corresponds roughly to nowadays’ Gunma Prefecture).
In the middle of the feudal era and the Bakufu (Shogunate), the school thrived under the direction of Morito Sandayū Tomotsune. His adopted son, Morito Sankyū Gūta, counted up to 7000 disciples in the whole country at its maximum.
Then there was a decline during the Meiji restoration, and the transmission was interrupted in many clans. However, the Keishi Ryū school, created for the Police Force during the Meiji Era actually used some of its sword and Iai techniques.
What remained of it in the present age was transmitted within the Sakura Clan by Kobayashi Tojuro, pupil of Morito Sandayū Kinsei and 14th representative of the school.
After that, the sword fighting, Iai, Kama, Bō and Taijutsu techniques were transmitted to the present by Takeishi Kensō.

Thoughts on Budo's nature w/ Usami Hiroji of Sosuishi Ryu [Interview Part 2/2 - EN/FR/JA]

--- INTRODUCTION ---
Founded just in the middle of the 17th century by Futagami Hannosuke Masa-aki, Sōsuishi Ryū is a “Sōgōbujutsu”, a comprehensive martial art covering multiple battle situations. Even now, they still practice Iai and Jūjutsu techniques with and without sets of ancient armors, and with various weapons such as Katana, Tachi, and small concealed weapons. Those techniques were directly inspired by the most ancient Jūjutsu school in Japan, Take-no-uchi Ryū.
Initially developed within the Tōrenji clan, vassal to the Fukuoka clan, the school spread in North Kyūshū under the influence of the Shitama family, who took over the school after Futagami Han-no-suke passed away. The Sekiryukan Dojo, oldest Dojo in Japan, is still lead by the Shitama family.
In 1888, Matsui Hyakutarō Munetada, a disciple of the school, was called to Tokyo to teach Budo to the Akasaka Police. As he stayed in Tokyo, Matsui opened his own school under the name Sōsuishi-ryū Kumiuchi Koshi no Mawari.
Matsui’s schools continued under Sugiyama Shotaro, and then under Kitajima Koku, who named the branch “Kosonkai”. Today, the school is led by Mr. Kimura Akio but his poor health stopped him from giving us an interview himself. His assistant Mr. Usami Hiroji kindly accepted to answer our questions about their school, and gave us an interesting insight on the practice and principles of Sōsuishi Ryū.
