Daija Riverside Park - Things To Do, Parks, Temples and Gardens, Taipei, Taiwan
In the ever-busy Taipei city, the hustle and bustle is intoxicating. But every once in a while the wall-to-wall high-rise buildings and cacophony of zooming cars and machinery becomes overwhelming. At times like this, Taipei's residents seeks out solace in the pockets of peaceful natural scenery dotted throughout the city. And for times such as these, Dajia Riverside Park is a favourite. Dajia Riverside Park is situated alongside Keelung River (between Zhongshan and Dazhi Bridges). The great riverside recreation area spans over four hundred and twenty thousand meters and is one of Taipei City government's most valiant city greening projects.
Sprawling lime green lawns twist in and around sports areas where visitors enjoy basketball, tennis, badminton and even croquet. Also situated along the riverside are the Taiwan Flower Area, the Aquatic Stage community performance area and the Sea of Flowers - where flowers are set into colourful arrangements. To take in all of the splendid sights of the Dajia Riverside Park, it is best to travel by bicycle. Pedal from home or grab a Taipei City YouBike to enjoy the bicycle path vista. Those wanting to get up some speed rather than glide by at leisure, take note that weekends are a fairly busy time and the bicycle path may be a lazy pedalling affair.

Yuanshan Park Area
East of MRT Yuanshan Station lies the Taipei Expo Park, which served as venue for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. Many of the flower gardens and buildings created for the expo remain, and can still be enjoyed.
There you can also visit Maji Square, which in recent times has become one of Taipei’s hippest hangouts. The airy covered square includes an upscale grocery, a bagel shop, an “international food street”, featuring French, Mexican, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Thai and, of course, Taiwanese snack foods, a merry-go-round, the Triangle nightclub, a craft beer shop, a creative market, and restaurant-pubs.
Fine Arts Park Area
Continuing beyond Maji Square, you’ll pass the Pavilion of New Fashion, an imposing structure constructed of bamboo and PET bottles. Crossing Zhongshan North Road will then take you into the Fine Arts Park Area. Head left to visit the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, one of the city’s best museums. Beside its entrance area you’ll also find the Taipei Story House, a restored British Tudor-style mansion in which various exhibits are staged.
To complete your tour of Taipei Expo Park, cycle through the fairytale-like Floral Tunnel and over the eco-friendly Solar Bridge, then cross Xinsheng North Road to reach the third section, the Xinsheng Park Area. Here you’ll encounter wide-open spaces, more flower displays, a botanical garden, and the Pavilion of Dreams, home to a café that is a fine spot to stop for a drink.
Lin An Tai Historical House & Museum
North of the Pavilion of Dreams, cross Binjiang Street to reach the Lin An Tai Historical House & Museum, a gorgeously restored traditional south Fujian courtyard-style residence. If the complex seems oddly situated, that’s because decades ago it was saved from destruction in its original location on Siwei Road, and rebuilt here.
Dajia Riverside Park
Next, follow Lane 5 beside the complex to reach the Lin An Tai Evacuation Gate (No. 10 Water Gate), through which you can access Dajia Riverside Park. This lovely green expanse on the southern bank of the Keelung River between Zhongshan and Dazhi bridges is renowned as the venue for the annual Spring Wave Music and Art Festival and Taipei’s Dragon Boat Festival races. If lucky, you’ll get to see dragon-boat paddlers practicing near Dazhi Bridge.
This park also features a 75-meter-high water fountain which, when running, is a sight to behold, with the iconic Grand Hotel in the background across the river.
Rainbow Bridge
The path is flat for most of this journey, so you’ll barely break into a sweat before reaching the Rainbow Bridge. Pedestrian-only Rainbow Bridge is not in fact rainbow-colored; it is red, featuring a steel arch that is likened to the shape of a dragon leaping the river. This is a pretty spot to watch the sunset, and couples might have trouble resisting the temptation to take a romantic selfie beside the large steel sculpture of the word “LOVE” by the riverside path, with the illuminated bridge in the background.
Songshan Ciyou Temple
Before entering the 600-meter-long street in which the market is set up in the evening, you’ll want to first pop into Songshan Ciyou Temple, Taipei’s most renowned temple devoted to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. The premises feature over a hundred deity statues, spread over six floors, with the ones at the top being the most impressive. The temple was recently restored, with a colorful new frieze added to the sides and back of the main Mazu shrine on the first floor.
Raohe Street Tourist Night Market
This night market is one of Taipei’s most famous, and many visitors say that it feels more authentic and less touristy than some of the bigger ones. The market’s most famous stall, evidenced by the long lineup even before the rest of the market really gets going, is Fuzhou Shizu Black Pepper Buns, right at the east-end entrance near the temple. At the center, another popular choice is Chen Dong Ribs Stewed in Medicinal Herbs.

Japanese tea ritual (茶の湯) & Lin An-Tai Home (文建會旅遊網站) in Taipei (臺北市)
Traditional Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu [茶の湯] or chadō [茶道]) and an inside look at the Lin An-Tai Historical House (文建會旅遊網站) located in Binjiang (Pin Chiang) Park in Taipei City (臺北市), Taiwan (臺灣) during our trip on Feb. 9, 2011. This historical home is one of Taipei City's artistic and cultural locations that are part of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition (臺北國際花卉博覽會).
The tea ceremony was presented by students of Soochow University (Dongwu Daxue, 東吳大學, 东吴大学), a private university located in Taipei City.
The house is a traditional Chinese courtyard house with elegant decorations and is one of the few traditional houses preserved in northern Taiwan. The Lin family came to Taiwan in the 18th century and engaged in trade in northern Taiwan. With the money they made, they built a grand house and named it 'Lin An tai'. The house is almost 230 years old and is the best-preserved and maintained ancient house in Taipei City.
Lin An-Tai Old Homestead is famous for its delicate carvings; one of the examples is the creative dragon carving on the front door. There are six dragons, representing the six sons in the family. The carvings of vases and bats carry the meanings of good luck, wealth and safety. Some of the tiles and bricks of this ancient building have been restored due to its long history, but the stones and woods have remained intact over the long years. The crescent shaped pond in front of the building was used for defense, raising fish, prevent fire, water supply and keep a moderate temperature.
Han people from China's Fujian province settled in Taipei in the 18th century. They thrived due to a booming overseas trade. Unfortunately, very little evidence of their daily life remained after the Japanese occupation and rapid post-World War II modernization.
The Lin An-Tai home gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of the enterprising merchants, who made the Taipei area their home 300 years ago. A second-generation merchant in Taiwan, Lin Chih-neng, built this house in 1783 at the present location of Dunhua South Road. With accumulating wealth, subsequent generations expanded the house and named it Lin An Tai, with An commemorating their city of origin in Fujian, Anxi, while Tai was from the name of their business Jung Tai Shop.
Taipei City is hosting the Garden Festival in the Yuanshan area and sites include many of the city's artistic and cultural locations like the Zhongshan Soccer Stadium, Taipei Children's Recreation Center, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei Story House, the Lin-An-tai Historical Home and the Dajia Riverside Park.
The Flora Expo opened on Nov. 6, 2010 and will run until April 25, 2011. It is a garden festival recognized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH / IAHP) and is categorized as an A2B1 horticulture exposition.
The Garden Festival is organized by the Taipei City Government in partnership with the Taiwan Floriculture Development Association (TFDA). The city was chosen to host the event in April 2006.
The Expo is divided into four major areas: Yuanshan Park, Taipei Artist Park, Xinsheng Park and the Dajia Riverside Park. It has 14 pavilions and occupies an area of 91.8 ha (0.000918 km). Each area is also covered with many outdoor gardens, including a Global Garden Area (featuring exhibits from the USA, Greece, the Netherlands, Thailand, Bhutan, Hawaii, Hong Kong and Japan, among others), a Fujian-style garden, and a Sea of Flowers. In addition, it features over 800 varieties of orchids, 329 million locally-developed plant varieties, and award-winning landscape and gardening designs from 22 nations.

Huashan 1914 Creative Park Taipei ~ Bars and restaurants
Located in the heart of Taipei city, Taiwan, Huashan Creative Arts Park was built in 1914. As one of the oldest and most well preserved structures in Taiwan, Huashan Creative Arts Park was once Taiwan’s largest wine producing factory during the 1920’s. After relocation of the wine factory in the late 1980’s, the factory was abandoned for almost a decade before the government started to make changes on land authorities and plans to rebuild the area. It all started by a group of artists and performers stumbled into the abandoned factory and started staging plays, restoring a small section of the abandoned halls. Their experimental performances and intriguing choice of venue quickly caught the attention of local law enforcement and the group was promptly cited for trespassing. This minor act of excessive enthusiasm however, was just the beginning.
Soon after, local artists became drawn to the open spaces, high ceilings and abundant natural light. Art and literary giants from across Taipei began using the factory as an inspirational work space, giving performances and leaving their distinctive mark on the structures themselves. This became huge within the industry and in 1999, the Association of Culture Environment Reform Taiwan, a non-profit organization, was established to oversee the restoration of the factory into a fully fledged arts center. The factory was then renamed to Huashan Creative Park and rebuilding of the park was officially started in 2005.
In 2007, the Taiwan Cultural-Creative Development Co. Ltd assumed responsibility for the renovation and operation of the Park and renamed it Huashan 1914. An organically creative environment has been growing ever since. Huanshan 1914 now serves as Taipei’s primary creative arts center and a hosting ground for Taiwan’s most significant cultural activities, including the “Simple Life” music festival and the “BiBo” student design expo. Today, Huashan 1914 is not only the heart of Taiwan’s creative pulse, but also a bridge to a unique architectural past.
