Walking Through Medieval Al Qasr Dakhla Oasis, Egypt
We continued walking through this deserted but still fascinating old city. Wandering from place to place to look at olive oil presses, a still stately Medresa, and even buying a scarf made by a local. (There's always a time and place to shop, isn't there?)
The Medieval Town of Al Qasr Dakhla Oasis, Egypt
Al Qasr Village is a landmark in the Western Desert of Egypt with buildings that reflect an Islamic architectural style, dating back to 570 A.D. Deserted now and a historic monument, it contains the remains of a mosque with a three story wooden minaret.
Each house had a slab of palm wood over the door telling who carved the wood, and verses from the Koran. ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I began walking through this very interesting, mud brick village that once contained over 2,500 inhabitants.

A local guide will take you through passages and alleyways that is unlikely to navigate on your own. There is a lot to see including the old Islamic school and court (madrassa) dating back to the 10th century, the gallows, an olive press, a date press and a donkey drawn grain mill

Temple of Deir Al Hagar in Dakhla Oasis , Western Desert, Egypt
Deir al-Hagar can be translated as Monastery of Stone, and in ancient times this was a lone Roman Period temple located south of the cultivated area of the Dakhla Oasis about ten kilometers from el-Qasr in the desert. Its ancient name was Setweh, Place of Coming Home.
This is a sandstone temple erected during the reign of the Emperor Nero (54-67 AD). The temple was mainly dedicated to the Theban triad, consisting of Amun-Re, Mut and Khonsu, though Seth, who was the principle god of the Oasis, was also honored here. Here, Seth is depicted with a falcon head and a blue anthropomorphic body.
