Vietnam's Romantic Hill Town Train-The Da Lat Railway
Da Lat is located in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam. It was established by the French during their occupation as a hill town resort in 1907. It’s temperate climate at an elevation of 1500 meters provided French settlers with a cool retreat from the hot tropical climate below. The railway was established to provide daily transport for passengers from Saigon and the coastal town of Nha Trang, which would further connect travellers to the north. The Da Lat Railway Station was designed in 1932 and opened in 1938. It is a unique building in that it incorporates an art deco style with traditional native Cao Nguyen highland communal house elements. Considering the railway shut down during the Vietnam war years due to military activity it’s surprisingly in pretty good shape. The railway and the Da Lat station laid dormant for many years until it was finally resurrected as a tourist attraction in 1991. The 7km ride takes passengers to Trai Mat with a 40 minute stop before heading back to the station. There’s an original steam locomotive on display but these days the train is pulled by a diesel engine. Service runs 5 times a day with the first train at 7:45 and the last one at 4pm. A ticket costs about $5 for foreigners. When this was a full service railway operating from Saigon and Nha Trang there would be three cars for passengers and one for cargo. Look for the carriage with the padded seats for a little extra comfort. There’s just something about train travel that sets it apart with other forms of transportation. The sound of the engine and the wheels clicking on the tracks, the whistle from the conductor, it’s a true adventure ride. As the train pulls away from the station the landscape opens up to reveal the little enclaves and rural landscape along with the reminders of Da Lat’s colonial heritage. The tradition of flower and vegetable growing in Da Lat goes as far back as the 1930’s. The train takes you past today’s latest technology in agriculture including greenhouses and aquatic farming. After 20 minutes we arrived at Trai Mat and are given 40 minutes to wander around the village. Most head for the Linh Phuoc or Dragon Pagoda about a 10-15 walk from the train station. The most unique aspect of this pagoda is the building material used to construct it. Made up of debris of glass, porcelain, and pottery. The pillars at the front of the Buddhist temple are in the shape of dragons, all made from glass. Another dragon is found near a pond next to the temple. It’s total winding length measures 49 meters, with scales made completely from 12,000 empty glass bottles. Across from the pond and dragon sits the temple’s most prominent structure, a 37 meter high seven storey tower. The first floor houses a bell that weighs 8.5 tons. The building is adorned with ceramic mosaics of dragons and phoenixes. This stop before getting back on the train for the return to Da Lat is a great opportunity to get a few quiet moments in the countryside. Surrounding yourself with the greenhouses and fields completes your experience in the southern highlands. Then it’s back on the train for the 20 minute ride to Da Lat station. This is a unique train travel experience, very different from a ride on Vietnam’s regular service. The sounds of rail travel on the Da Lat line are louder, deeper. The rocking cars and overall motion and sensation of the train perhaps would be tiring and uncomfortable on a long journey, but for a short tourist ride, it’s a sensational window into the history of Vietnam’s early tourism days.

DA LAT VINTAGE TRAIN - Vietnam
A trip on the delightfully quaint, turn of the century, French style, Da Lat train.
DALAT To Trai Mat By Vintage Train I VIETNAM
We went for a little trip from Dalat to ride a french old colonial train in Dalat. Is it worth? We were quite happy to travel by train after a long time and it was pretty cool but we weren't really satisfied with the scenery views from the train. But it was still pretty great to be on an old train. After that, we arrived in Trai Ma where we visited Linh Phuoc Pagoda and that was a highlight of this trip.

In its heyday, Dalat Station boasted three arrivals and departures daily. The French built the railway station itself, while the zigzagging tracks were planned and implemented by the Swedish, experts in tricky terrain.

The footsteps moved to the Dalat Railway Station. It is a hill station built during the French colonial period, a summer station for avoiding hot weather, and it is mixed with European architecture throughout. The train that crossed Ho Chi Minh and Dalat stopped due to Vietnam war, but it is protected as a national cultural heritage designated by the government. This is also the 'youth point' that many young people are looking for. My lover, I am a boyfriend. One, two, three, five, six months. The Dalat railway station is filled with the pride of Vietnam in its struggle against colonial ships and wounds of war. It is indeed Dalat under the sky.

Exploring Dalat, Vietnam
Da Lat, located in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, has lots of activities to keep you occupied. If you feel like having a break from the heat of the lowlands, head to Da Lat city to chill out.
The mornings here are fresh and the evenings cool and crisp, even chilly sometimes.
We went exploring the 'city of eternal spring' during our 4 day stay in Dalat and were pleasantly surprised with the outdoors Alpine feel the place has. Mountain trekking, cable cars and preserved train stations, you could be in Switzerland?!

We recently spent two days in Da Lat and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. This vlog covers everything that we saw, ate. So sit back - its a long one! And enjoy!
To start off, we checked in to our accommodation that we booked on Airbnb - This accommodation is a hostel called Maple Hostel! The hostel is located in the centre of a valley overlooking one of the many green pine tree forests of Da Lat. Our favorite part about staying at this hostel was the peace and quiet, the sounds of birds and insects, beautiful butterflies flying around and the serene music being played at the restaurant downstairs. Iv
Not only does the hostel have private rooms, they have a cafe downstairs that serves breakfast, coffee and tea...and they hire out motorbikes too! We ordered a Honda Airblade and it was there within minutes.
As you saw, we started our Da Lat adventure at Datanla Waterfalls where we took a rollercoaster through the Pine tree forests down to Datanla Waterfall. It was an unforgettable experience and we highly recommend you do it when you're in Da Lat!
Sadly, the rains started coming in for the weekend so we waited the rains out at a local Nem Noung restaurant called Nem Nuong Dung Loc where we had our first authentic Vietnamese spring rolls, and it was great! We then headed to the Da Lat Night Market around Nguyen Thi Minh Khai where we had our first Vietnamese pizza, Soy milks and Da Lat strawberries. The market has a lot to offer from winter clothing, to art, to fresh fruits, vegetables and food. A must-see in Da Lat.
The next day, we visited the Lam Vien Square and then headed to the Da Lat Railway Station where we saw beautiful old trains used before, during and after the Vietnamese War and still in-use to this day for short tourist trips. Da Lat Railway station is a great spot to take photos for instagram so be sure to check it out!
After the trains, we stopped at a cafe for lunch called La Chalet and got absolutely wet on the way as sadly the heavy rains set in for the weekend. La Chalet is right across the road from the Crazy House, which is also a tourist attraction in Da Lat that most people go to.
We planned to visit K'Ho Coffee plantation and village but the rains didn't stop. One of the things Da Lat is most known for is its coffee plantations and exportation. Our last morning was spent at Xuan Huong coffee garden before we caught our bus back home to Nha Trang.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments below and we'll get back to you. If you have no questions, still leave a comment just to say hello! :)

Where we ate and stayed linked below.
Dalat is one of the most amazingly unique places in Vietnam. Its surrounding by mountains lakes and pine trees. The most unique experiences can be had by renting a moped and exploring the city and the surrounding countryside.
We spent our first day in Dalat doing just that. We visited the old train station, Trai Mat village, The Crazy House and the Xuan Huong Lake. We rented a moped and we just explored the city.
It has been one of my favourite places in Vietnam so far !
We stayed in a great homestay called Lightning House:
The owners are lovely, the rooms are cool but the walls are very thin so every little noise can be heard!
We ate breakfast at:
An Cafe
Brew and Breakfast
Both of these places were amazing. So tasty!
We ate Dinner at:
Very nice Italian restaurant with a lovely Collie dog!

Dalat Train Villa & Cafe
When I lived in Vietnam for 1.5 years, my very good friend Hannah (Ngọc Hân) and I visited the Dalat Train Villa & Cafe 3 on July 4th, 2017. A good way to celebrate USA Independence Day. It's surrounded by a lush green garden, and is located about a half mile from Da Lat Old Train Station in Dalat, Vietnam.

Dalat Railway Station - Linh Phouc Pagoda
Watch history come alive at the Dalat Railway Station in the Vietnam Highlands and wonder at the French designed Art Deco themed building with railway carriages and locomotives. Now operates as a limited railway to TRAI MAT. Here you will discover the Linh Phouc Pagoda, a Buddhist Temple with wonderful mosaics, special cultural and religious displays including a scary crypt scene attraction.
Special Thanks for,
