The Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival (official organisation name: Stanthorpe Festival Association Inc.) is one of Queensland’s longest running and most successful Festivals! Voted Queensland’s 9th favourite Iconic Event/Festival during the Queensland Q150 Celebrations, the Festival is a “must do” on the Queensland events calendar.
The biennial festival is a celebration of the Granite Belt region’s produce and booming wine industry. An average of 60,000 people attend the festival and this is arguably Australia’s leading harvest festival having a successful track record spanning five decades.
WHEN IS IT?
The 2016 festival will start on Friday 26 February with a street market and turning on of the carnival lights, followed by seven days of places to see and things to do then finish with three big days of non-stop fun from 4-6 March.

It’s in Stanthorpe, heart of the Granite Belt Wine Region, on the New England Highway just north of the NSW border. Stanthorpe is less than three hours drive from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Byron, Armidale, Dalby and Goondiwindi, a bit more from the Sunshine Coast, two hours from Lismore and the Northern Rivers, and a comfortable one and a half hours from Toowoomba.

Welcome to Episode 1 of our Caravanning Australia On A Budget series! We travel around the country in a Jayco Starcraft Caravan, towed behind our Nissan Patrol 4.8L Y61.
We're a family of four who've been living the vanlife for about three years now. These days you'll find us wandering slowly across the country - exploring, homeschooling the kids and picking up work along the way.
IN THIS EPISODE...
We head off from Brisbane as we wave goodbye to family and friends in the area. The August winds got us coming out of Toowoomba though, which found us pulled over on the side of the highway to strap the awning that had come undone!
First Free Camp was at Bowenville Reserve, Wainui (south of Dalby). Beautiful spot with toilets, bins and a creek.
Next stop was Chinchilla to check out the Big Watermelon. Just out of town we discovered Chinchilla Weir, which is a fantastic Donation Camp. It even has power and water for a handful of people!
From Chinchilla we ventured on to Miles and spent a few hours stepping back in time at the Miles Historical Village. I've got to say, it's the best old world village we've come across yet. You can actually wander around ye olde town and see how it would have been way back in the 1800's.
After a bit of shopping in Roma, we had a look at the Biggest Bottle Tree in town, which was a lovely old thing - over 100 years old.
Our next camp was at Muckadilla, which is by donation. The teeny tiny community provides toilets, free hot showers and rubbish bins. Not a bad spot to chill for a few days.
Then onwards we went to the Outback town of Mitchell. This place was on our bucket list for the trip as we wanted to soak ourselves in the hot Artesian Spa. It was well worth the $26 family pass to enjoy the 41'C water! It's even said to have healing qualities.
In Mitchell we stayed at Neil Turner Weir and got quite comfortable for about four or five days. Onsite was clean flushing toilets, rubbish bins, electric BBQ's and a nice spot for fishing and water activities.
Next stop for us was Augathella, mainly because we wanted to capture the Big Meat Ant, which was cool. We stayed at the Warrego River Camping spot right in town, across from the Ellengowan Hotel (which does a mean feed by the way). The camp has toilets, bins and drinking water on tap. Plus, a Skate Park for the kids - that was a cool surprise!
Our las leg of this journey was to Charleville. It's as fast west as we're going at the moment, before we head south-east and trek towards New South Wales.
Charleville houses the Cosmos Centre of Queensland. We did the Astrology by Day tour, but unfortunately the Observatory experience was clouded out.
Ahh well, you win some, you lose some. I'm sure we'll find another Observatory somewhere around the country.

Rail Around Queensland - Out Of Dalby

This program documents the history of the Railways in the Dalby area.
Situated in the centre of the Darling Downs, Dalby was once the terminus of the Main Western Railway, and the central hub for three branch lines.
Today the main rail traffic is made up of coal, hauled from Macalister, however past traffic was much more interesting. Join us as we explore and travel these lines!
AC16 class steam loco 221A will take us to Meandarra and other trains will take us to Glenmorgan. 2000 class railmotors make it to Bell and Jandowae, and we will travel from Macalister to Bowenville with coal trains hauled by various diesel locos.
Rich in history, this program takes us right from the planning stages through to the present day - where the drought has caused the Dalby Branch lines to lose all traffic leaving an uncertain future.
As a bonus, the trip to Meandarra, and the coal trains running from Macalister are provided in separate programs, free of narration or music.

Not an easy life whilst basically hand feeding the sheep to keep them alive. A sheep station is a large property in Australia or New Zealand whose main activity is the raising of sheep for their wool and meat.
