Dale Abbey Ruins at summer solstice 2018
With the influx of fabulous weather this month, it's time for more adventures to historical sites.
Dale Abbey dates back to the 12th century & the ruins somehow are still standing silently in the middle of a field. I was determined to find the surrounding sights, even if it means almost losing my shoes.

It said they do not know who the Hermit was but I am sure I have seen reference that it might have been a local from the village.
Dale Abbey Archway
Here is drone footage of the Dale Abbey Archway,
It's such a fantastic piece of history that I was very excited to get a 360 shot of it, though in my haste I didn't quite keep the drone steady,
Thank you to Mr Allen who allowed me to take my drone up to get this footage.

Haunted Dale Abbey : The Suicidal Ghost of Prior Henry
A site survey of the Haunted Abbey. Dale Abbey, also called Stanley Park Abbey, was an Augustinian Abbey founded in 1162 AD. It is located in the village of Dale, Derbyshire, England. It was finally dissolved during the Reformation in 1539 AD, the last Abbot, Abbot John Bede, died in 1540 AD. Today it is but a ruin, with only a fraction of the structure still standing above ground level. It was excavated in 1878 & 1879 AD.
Dale Abbey is a haunted site, haunted by the Ghost of one of the first Priors back in the 12th Century. Prior Henry, one of the first Priors, was anything but the Holy man he was meant to be. Prior Henry had been running a coin counterfeiting operation from Dale Abbey, this illegal activity had gone undetected for some time, probably due to the remote location of the Abbey itself. Prior Henry was also having a sexual relationship with a local woman. Eventually his criminality was suspected, and when he realised it was only a matter of time before his arrest, Prior Henry decided to avoid the shame of a trial and commit suicide.
One night Prior Henry climbed into a hot bath and cut his wrists open with a dagger. He bled out into the bath and died soon after. It is not known what happened to the woman. Ever since that suicide, Dale Abbey has been Haunted by the Ghost of Prior Henry, he has been seen drifting around the ruins, the cuts to his wrists visible to see.
Not a current haunting, his Ghost has not been seen in a long time, but some local people still claim his Ghost can be witnessed drifting around the Abbey ruins.

Monasteries Dissolved By Henry VIII - Part 3
Part 3 of a series of videos of monasteries that were dissolved by Henry VIII of England in the Dissolution of the Monasteries (Suppression of the Monasteries). From 1536 - 1541 Henry VIII disbanded monasteries in England, Wales, and Ireland. Shap Abbey, Cumbria, UK - 3rd September, 2013
Shap Abbey was a monastic religious house of the Premonstratensian order on the western bank of the River Lowther in the civil parish of Shap Rural, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village of Shap, in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. The site is in the care of English Heritage and managed on its behalf by the Lake District National Park.
While staying near Shap for the week, we ventured down to Shap Abbey, now a ruin, but a fairly impressive one at that. This video features footage of the abbey ruins as well as the surrounding countryside, including the River Lowther, chickens in a large coup, and luscious green fields.

YORKSHIRE DALES TOUR FEATURING BOLTON ABBEY, THE STRID, BARDEN TOWER AND BURNSALL
Bolton Abbey to Burnsall”
Filmed 2nd November 2016

I return to Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, although on this occasion I visit a different part of the dale. Today’s tour starts in Bolton Abbey with its wonderful priory ruins beside the River Wharfe and a visit to “The Strid” which, although beautiful, is also very treacherous. The end of the day takes me to a gentler place as I explore the pretty village of Burnsall…..
