Fresh Delights: A Cooking Class in Split, Croatia
Of the many things to do in Split, Croatia, we chose a customized cooking class with The Art of Wine. Gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, selectarian or carnivorous, the culinary artist Jakša Bedalov is ready for any challenge and exceeded our expectations.
Fresh, seasonal ingredients are the key to delicious Croatian cuisine. Since our eating needs fall into the gluten-free and selectarian bracket, Tricia and I feasted on amazing buckwheat bread, zinfandel risotto, a cold salad with homegrown vegetables, and a fantastic cuttlefish and broad bean dish. We have concluded that 'slow-food' is hard-wired into Croatian DNA. :)
Our dining experience was coupled with a fantastic flight of wines indigenous to the coastal region of Central Dalmatia, including the white wine called Maraština, and a red mélange of Zinfandel, Dobričić, and Plavac Mali grapes.

Peka - A Delicious Food from Croatia
If you're traveling in Croatia and you want to try a local culinary favorite during your visit, seek out the roasted meat or fish dish called Peka. This recipe has been around for thousands of years and is designed for cooking in an open fire.
In the city of Trogir, you can find a tremendously tasty Peka at the Pizzeria Mirkec, where Ivan and Zoran will ensure that your holiday is complete with the best in Croatian cuisine.
In this episode of Destinations with Shawn and Tricia, we introduce you to the art of Peka-making and a local wine called Babić.

With local chef Tatiana Ciciliani leading the way, Zimmern goes in search of ingredients for sea rock soup and samples stew made of monkfish intestines. An up-and-coming tourist hotspot, Croatia still features ancient tastes from roasted dormice and giant offal kebabs to baked rooster and grilled frog.

Pašticada - Slow Food & Wine in The Croatian Countryside
A perfect slow cooker recipe, Pašticada is a delicious Croatian food. Coupled with a wine tasting experience at Krolo Winery, we enjoyed this traditional cuisine about an hour's drive outside the city of Split.
Perfect for holidays and family visits, Pašticada is a hearty dish that makes finding room for dessert a challenge. Typically made with beef, plums, red wine, carrots, potatoes and gnocchi, this dish is best paired with a bold Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot. But if you really want a true Croatian Pašticada experience, pop open a bottle of the wine that was born here: Zinfandel.
