Dalton Highway Cleanup at Coldfoot, Alaska
Nestled in a pretty valley in the Brooks Range, tiny Coldfoot, Alaska, lies a little north of the Arctic Circle on the Dalton Highway, the state's only road connection to the Arctic Ocean. In August 2012, volunteers from the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center, the nearby village of Wiseman, and Coldfoot Camp joined three ice road truckers from Carlile Transportation Systems to clean up a mile of the Dalton Highway in celebration of National Public Lands Day.
America's Most Dangerous Highway Coldfoot Camp
Coldfoot primarily serves as a truck stop on the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. It's the halfway point and only stop along the 414-mile haul road during the winter. A community with a population of 1.
ROAD TRIP IN ALASKA | SELF DRIVE | DRIVING ON DALTON HIGHWAY | THE DEADHORSE DRIVE 2016 - PART 2
Alaska Expedition 2016 was a journey where 16 travellers came together to explore one of the
remotest regions on the planet. Led by Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal – the group comprised of people from India, the UK, and Tanzania drove in a convoy of Jeep Cherokees to explore the incredible landscapes of the largest state of United States. Starting from Anchorage, where the group was introduced and briefed about what was in store for the coming 2 weeks, we drove south to Seward where we experienced a Cruise in the Kenai Fjords National Park that took us to see a Glacier, one of natures’ breath-taking marvels.
Every few minutes, a massive chunk of ice would break from the glacier and fall into the ocean
making a deafening sound. It was a first-time experience for most of the participants to come face to face with such a wonderful creation of nature and this was just the beginning of the journey.
After 2 weeks, the Alaska Expedition concluded. 16 strangers came together to experience
something amazing. They experienced the highs, pushed their limits, sometimes felt out of their comfort zone, but their desire to explore the unexplored not only made them a part of a rare group of travellers but also brought all of them closer and left them bonded forever.
Here is a short film produced by Adventures Overland on the experience of 16 adventure seekers
who drove all the way from Anchorage to Deadhorse, the northernmost point of Alaska.

Alaska Dalton Highway Storm 3/19/2016
High winds, low visibility. This video was taken between Coldfoot Alaska and Yukon Crossing. Dangerous driving conditions. I wouldn't normally film while driving, but we were barely at a crawl. I got stranded on the road several hours after this video was taken, and wasn't able to get moving again until the plows made it to me at around 8:30am the next day. Luckily I had warm gear and brought extra fuel. I had a range of 20 miles when the plow got to me. I could barely keep the car running because the blowing snow had gotten packed into all areas under my car and in the engine compartment, including my air intake. I had multiple electrical faults, and my transmission cooling lines were crushed. It was very much like when water freezes in a crack in a rock, and breaks it apart. My serpentine belt was making a lot of noise because it was close to snapping. Walked away from the whole thing with a rough running car and a little frost nip on my fingers and toes. Happy to have made it. If you travel the dalton highway in winter, make sure you have plenty of warm gear, extra fuel, and a CB radio to communicate with other drivers. Always yield to trucks, and communicate with them when necessary. They know the road, and if they give you advice, it's probably in your best interest to follow it.

Dalton Discoveries: Trucking the Dalton
While it may be common to view the Dalton Highway as an access to Alaska's northern wilderness, the road exists to allow access to the oil fields of the North Slope. Large tractor trailers haul fuel and supplies to the massive industrial complex near the Arctic Ocean. While this may seem like a routine run for the trucks, crossing 500 miles of the Yukon River, Brooks Range, and North Slope can prove to be an expedition of its own kind. The small community of independent and resourceful truckers that make a living navigating their big rigs to and from the Arctic have some incredible stories to tell.

Coldfoot Camp, Alaska
Was a worker camp during Alaska pipeline construction. Now serving the public and truckers along the Dalton Highway about 70 miles above the Arctic Circle.
Gas on the Dalton Highway, Alaska
Gas prices on the Dalton Highway are steep. We paid about $100 for gas at the Yukon River Camp. But like John says, it beats walking. We're also told that the Yukon River Camp serves up some great pie. Maybe next time we'll try that too? Be prepared to stop here for gas on the Dalton Highway. We were told that the next gas station is about two hours away in Coldfoot. The Yukon River camp also had showers, a gift and snack area, rooms and the restaurant. A BLM information center is across the street for information about the Dalton Highway in Alaska or the Arctic Circle.

The first drone footage is Middle Fork Koyukuk River seeing arctic ground squirrels. Beautiful views of imposing Sukakpak Mountain. The pressures on the limestone have changed much of the mountain into marble. Note veins of copper, quartz, crystalline, and cinnabar in mountain face.
Wiseman is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 14 at the 2010 census.
Wiseman is a small mining community along the Middle Fork Koyukuk River in the Brooks Range. It was founded by gold miners who abandoned the Slate Creek (later Coldfoot) settlement around 1908.
Robert Marshall, who became a prominent American forester, preservation activist, and a co-founder of The Wilderness Society, wrote the bestselling book, Arctic Village, about his 15-month stay in this frontier town around the year 1930. Marshall described Wiseman and the Koyukuk River area surrounding it, as the happiest civilization of which I have knowledge. The community is 3 miles (5 km) from the Dalton Highway, and it was not connected to the road until the early 1990s.
Located just three miles off the Dalton Highway and near the boundary of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Wiseman is a jumping-off point for properly equipped backpackers who want to trek into the park on foot.
Today less than two-dozen people live in Wiseman, a century-old mining town that enjoyed its heyday in the 1920s. Thirty cabins from the gold rush era are still used today, mostly by seasonal residents. It can get cold here in the winter; easily dropping to minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Wiseman’s scenic settling along the Middle Fork of the Koyukuk River and against the backdrop of the Brooks Range give you a sense for its recreational options. Hiking, fishing, river rafting or float trips, bird watching and wildlife viewing are excellent in summer. In winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog mushing and most notably, northern lights viewing, are excellent.

Leave everything and wander” is the result of Sara Bertagnolli’s and Luca Sguazzini’s desire to join their own skills and realize a dream: that of traveling, leaving the certainties and securities of everyday life behind.
After university Sara achieved high-level professional goals in the field of management and became the personal assistant to the fashion designer Philipp Plein.
Luca has been traveling a lot since he was a child and the last year he gained notoriety for his participation in the Italian version of “Dancing with the stars”; he has more than 138k followers on Instagram and 50k on Facebook.
They have decided to join forces and to tell a life out of the ordinary on social networks. The plan is to travel through Canada, Alaska and, in a second moment, United States, Messico and South America and to share the trip’s photos and videos on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram, giving to everyone the possibility to experience the “wander-spirit”.
Traveling without temporal or spatial limits will give Sara and Luca the possibility to entangle their story with that of people they will meet on the road and to discover new cultures, visiting also the places which are not famous, the ones which often have the biggest surprises in store.
The start-up budget will be limited in order to demonstrate that – also without great economical resources – everything is possible if you put the work in and involve as many people as possible.

Dalton Discoveries: The Hickel Highway
In just over 100 days during the winter of 1968, what began as Governor Walter Hickel's last minute idea for the State of Alaska's opportunity to profit on Alaska's north slope oil fields rapidly changed as the land, itself, put a stop to the arctic road construction. 'Seemingly overnight, that scar on the landscape became a cautionary tale of how quickly that wilderness can disappear.'
