Dalton Winery and Wine Tasting
One of our favortie brands of Israeli wines is Dalton. They make a wonderful selection of non-mevushal wines. Recently we were in Tsfat and decided to take the 12 minute drive north to visit the Dalton Winery and Visitor Center.
The masgiach was available to discuss the wines with us in English and pour us the samples (remember I mentioned the wine is not mevushal?). The merlot was very good, it didn't have the earthy after taste that many Israeli wines have. However the Cabernet Sauvignon was superb.
When it's just the two of us, we usually don't finish the bottle, so we were happy to see they were selling the small 375 cc half bottles.
This is a great quick stop if you are heading up to Meron or Tsfat and are looking for gifts for your Israeli hosts, or just some good wine to take home with you.
Just 60 minutes north of Villa Rimona Zimmers VillaRimona.com
People wishing to take the full tour the facility are requested to call the winery in advance on 04 698 7683 x 2 or merkaz@dalton-winery.com.
The winery is open every day (except for Shabbat and Holidays) between 10am-4pm, last tour is at 4pm, and on Fridays 10am-1pm, last tour is at 1pm. The tour and a tasting take about 45 minutes.
Shiraz Yuvalim 2012, Dalton, Israel
Kolejne wino z Galilei. Z założenia mające oddawać charakter terroir. Dalton, to obok Golan Heights Winery, jedna z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych izraelskich winnic. Tutejsze winiarstwo nie szuka inspiracji w autochtonicznych szczepach, nieznanych lądach, ale w pięknej interpretacji klasyki.

During this war we couldn't give the treatment to the vineyard so we expect about 10 per cent of damage because we can't spray and we can't give the treatment before the harvest.

12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Moshe Haviv, Manager of Dalton winery:
For us the ceasefire was a miracle because in the same time of the ceasefire we started the harvest, it was just the day. So I told them the night before, 'listen, tomorrow (14 August) we start the harvest and if it won't be a ceasefire then be ready, I will call you,' and then I called them and we started the harvest in the morning and for us, it was the best present.

STORYLINE:
During Israel's war against Hezbollah guerrillas based in southern Lebanon, Moshe Haviv watched from two hilltops away as Hezbollah rockets set alight the vineyards of his kosher Dalton Winery, a helicopter crashed into a hill, killing two Israeli soldiers, and the shelling of a Lebanese village.
With a ceasefire called just in time to harvest an especially promising grape crop, Haviv and other Israeli wine makers were hoping for their best season ever.
For us the ceasefire was a miracle..it was the best present, said the former military officer, ecstatic that last week's ceasefire came just in time to save the wine season.
Grape harvesting was scheduled to begin this week in northern Israel, the country's richest wine-growing region.
Perfect timing for the ceasefire, combined with a good year, climate-wise, for grapes, and an expanding industry that is gaining international recognition should all help make up for a month of war and lost sales, wine makers said.
They're expecting patriotism to play a part, too.
Israelis are being encouraged to purchase local products for the upcoming Jewish New Year, and Yad Sarah, a volunteer organisation, has launched a promotional campaign for Israeli wines in the US market.
Still, wineries were scrambling to make up time and salvage vines that couldn't be reached and treated during the 34 days of fighting.
Dalton expected to lose around 10 per cent of its crop because of missed spraying.
It hired a crew of about 30 people to harvest and ship the grapes, and that crew was working between 18 and 20 hours a day to prevent any further losses.
Uri Spiegel, 24, a paratrooper who was last week marching 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Litani River in Lebanon back to Israel after the ceasefire, was one of those helping.
I came back here to help some of my friends to re-establish the North actually and I was told that this particular place was actually on the Katyusha fire and that they had some severe damages so I decided to come and help for a couple of days, said Spiegel.
