Iztuzu Beach, Dalyan, Muğla, Turkey, Asia
İztuzu Beach is a 4.5 km long beach near Dalyan, in the Ortaca district of the Province of Muğla in southwestern Turkey. The beach is a narrow spit of land, which forms a natural barrier between the fresh water delta of the Dalyan river and the Mediterranean. It is one of the main breeding grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and is therefore often referred to as Turtle Beach. The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is on the IUCN Red list of endangered animals. For this reason the beach has had a protected status since 1988 and is part of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area. The greatest threat to the survival of the loggerhead sea turtle is on these sandy beaches where its life begins. This has triggered an international conservation effort that began in the 1990s. The effort to protect loggerhead sea turtle eggs and to assure a safe breeding ground for this endangered species has made international headlines. This issue is one of the most critical items on Turkey's environmental agenda. From 1984 onwards there had been rumours about developing the beach for mass tourism. Plans were discussed for building a hotel and a marina at the delta side and bungalows at Küçük Dalyan at the banks of Sülüngür lake. In 1986 the owners of the beach huts were summoned to clear and dismantle their huts by October that year.
In April 1987 the rumours about a hotel complex came true, when building started on the Kaunos Beach Hotel, an 1800-bed holiday resort to be financed with German development aid funds.
Since this would have meant the end of an important nesting habitat for the loggerhead turtle, June Haimoff, together with fellow-environmentalists such as David Bellamy, Lily Venizelos, Günther Peter, Nergis Yazgan and Keith Corbett, launched a campaign to save the beach. This started a grim international struggle between conservationists and developers. There were protests from -amongst others- the IUCN, Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund and the Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt.
Especially in the Federal Republic of Germany the building project caused great indignation, because German DEG wanted to claim a fund of 5 million euros worth from public means under the pretense of development aid. June Haimoff approached the WWF, upon which Prince Philip -then president- asked the Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Özal for a moratorium, while awaiting an Environmental impact assessment. This request was granted and building temporarily stopped. In the meantime the German Federal Government decided against the use of funds for the hotel by DEG. In July 1988 the Turkish government decided against development and gave İztuzu beach and its hinterland the Special Environmental Protection Area status. June Haimoff has narrated the struggle to preserve İztuzu beach as a nesting habitat in her autobiographical book Kaptan June and the Turtles, that was first published in 1997. In 2001 a Turkish translation was published called Kaptan June ve Kaplumbağalar.

KAPTAN JUNE AND THE DALYAN TURTLES
Ever since JUNE HAIMOFF settled in Dalyan in 1984, she has strived to protect Iztuzu Beach and its sea turtle nesting places. Her campaign to save this Caretta caretta breeding site from exploitation for mass tourism in the mid 1980's was given considerable media attention by fellow-environmentalist Professor Sir David Bellamy. Consequently, an environmental effects survey was carried out, resulting in the declaration of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers number 88/13019 dated 12.06.1988.).
June had a long-held ambition to create a foundation to endure the welfare of the beach and its loggerhead sea turtles. The Turkish Government requires an asset of 50,000 TL ( approx. £22,000) to allow the establishment of such a registered charity. Thanks to generous benefactors and a gift from TUI AG/Futouris, the Foundation has become a registered entity.
The first official step on the way was to sign the foundation's constitution. Therefore June Haimoff and her fellow-founders saw the notary in Denizli on 11 November 2010. This was the first official and therefore emotional step in establishing the long-fought-for Kaptan June Sea Turtle Conservation Foundation. More detailed information of this extraordinary event can be found on the EVENTS page.
On 24 February 2011, the Foundation was given the GREEN LIGHT by Turkish court and after publication in the Resmi Gazete on April 9th now has the official status of a Vakıf, a government approved entity.
The Kaptan June Sea Turtle Conservation Foundation will be an enduring facility for raising revenue to protect the sea turtles and their habitats, support other environmental causes, and enable young Turkish people to attend University and study Environmental Sciences.
If you would like to be involved in this worthwhile project, please contact June Haimoff at kaptanjune@gmail.com.
On the Dalyan River
In late September 2018, on a beautiful, still, late-afternoon, I took the last boat from Iztuzu Beach, the beautiful sandbar at the end of the Dalyan River delta, back to Dalyan, a few kilometres upriver.
The boats you see are run by the town's co-operative, and they cruise up and down the river every day taking visitors to and from the beach for a small fee.
Iztuzu Beach is a narrow sand spit, which forms a natural barrier between the fresh water delta of the Dalyan river and the Mediterranean. It is one of the main breeding grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and is therefore often referred to as Turtle Beach. The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is on the IUCN Red list of endangered animals.
The river journey takes you by the ancient city of Kaunos, a city of ancient Caria, a few kilometres west of Dalyan. Kaunos is a site that is interesting for both its archeological and ecological importance. Situated in the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area, it offers outstanding vistas and is rich in wildlife.
The Acropolis (Persikon), is situated on a 152 m high rock, fortified with Byzantine walls. Adjacent to the acropolis is a smaller fortification, called Heraklion. Until the 5th century BC this 50 m high cape reached into sea and there were two ports south and north of it.
The oldest find at the Kaunos archeological site is the neck of a Protogeometric amphora dating back to the 9th century BC, or even earlier. A statue found at the western gate of the city walls, pieces of imported Attic ceramics and the S-SE oriented city walls show habitation in the 6th century BC. However, none of the architectural finds at Kaunos itself dates back to earlier than the 4th century BC.
Towards the end of the journey, you get a glimpse above the river's sheer cliffs of the magnificent weathered façades of Lycian tombs cut from rock, circa 400 BC.

Dekamer Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, Dalyan, Muğla, Turkey, Asia
The Sea Turtle Rescue Center Dekamer were established in 2009 in Dalyan, Mugla-Turkey after a protocol was agreed upon between the Directorate of the Conservation of Nature and National Natural Parks and the Environmental Protection Agency for Special Areas of Turkish Ministry of Environment of Forestry, the Municipality of the Dalyan, and Pamukkale University. Later in the year, the the Higher Educational Council of Turkey officially recognized the rescue center and this constitution was published in the Turkish Official Newspaper. Despite having nesting and foraging grounds along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, only one turtle rescue centre has been established following the RAC/SPA (Regional Activity Center/Special Protected Areas) guidelines (RAC/SPA, 2004). This center is to be set up for year-round activity and to help educate the public about conservation efforts. DEKAMER will act as the regular monitoring of the Dalyan beach for nesting activities by accepting volunteers from all Universities. Any injured turtles found along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey are also brought the center and will take care of their necessary medical treatment and rehabilitation. DEKAMER is open for both national and international collaborations in all types of scientific studies.

Dalyan Turkey
Dalyan is a town in Mu?la Province located between the well-known districts of Marmaris and Fethiye on the south-west coast of Turkey. The town is an independent municipality, within the administrative district of Ortaca.
Dalyan achieved international fame in 1987 when developers wanted to build a luxury hotel on the nearby ?ztuzu Beach, a breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle species. The incident created major international storm when David Bellamy championed the cause of conservationists such as June Haimoff, Peter Günther, Nergis Yazgan, Lily Venizelos and Keith Corbett. The development project was temporarily stopped after Prince Philip called for a moratorium and in 1988 the beach and its hinterland were declared a protected area, viz. Köycegiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area.
Life in Dalyan revolves around the Dalyan Çay? River which flows past the town. The boats that ply up and down the river, navigating the maze of reeds, are the preferred means of transport to all the local sites.

Dalyan Sea
Köycegiz is a town and district of Mugla Province in the Aegean region of Turkey.
The town of Köycegiz lies at the northern end of a lake of the same name (Köycegiz Lake) which is joined to the Mediterranean Sea by a natural channel called Dalyan Delta. Its unique environment is being preserved as a nature and wildlife sanctuary, the Köycegiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area. A road shaded with trees leads to the township that carries the same name as the river, Dalyan, which is situated on the inland waterway and is a part of the neighboring district of Ortaca . Dalyan is highly popular with visitors and its maze of channels is explored by boat. The restaurants which line the waterways specialize in fresh fish. High on the cliff face, at a bend in the river, above the ancient harbor city of Caunos, tombs were carved into the rocks. The Dalyan Delta, with a long, golden sandy beach at its mouth, is a nature conservation area and a refuge for rare loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) and blue crabs.
