Dambegoda Bodhisattva statue - Maligawila. දඹේගොඩ බොසත් පිළිමය
Dambegoda is near Okkampitiya in the Buttala Divisional Secretariat Division of the Monaragala District of the Uva Province. It could be reached by proceeding to the right towards Okkampitiya at the Kumbukkane Junction on the Wellawaya-Moneragala road up to Maligawila and beyond another km.
The image which had been subjected to damage due to human intrvention was restored in 1990 by the Archaeological Department. Made of crystalline lime stone, the Bodhisatva image is 10m in height and weighs about 40 Tons.
The image can be described as a Bodhisatva, sculptured of the Samabhanga posture depicting strength, vitality, royalty and displaying the Katakahasta Mudra. The head band of the statue has a miniature image of a Buddha of the Samadhi posture. The imperial looking statue is adorned with royal jewellery. It is mounted on a mound with several tiers becoming smaller when reaching the top and may have been sheltered by a canopy. Avalokeiteshvara Bodhisatva tradition has evolved with Mahayana Buddhism. It is believed that worshipping Avalokiteshvara Bodhisatva could bring to the adherants security and the efficasy to cure sickness. It is believed that this could be the spot mentioned in the Mahavamsa where Prince Agbo of Ruhuna is said to have constructed homes and bestowed them to the blind and the sick at Kanagama. This statue signifies the trend towards the Bodhisatva worship during the latter part of the Anuradhapura period.
Maligawila Monastery complex, near Butthala, Sri Lanka.
I saw the Maligawila Buddha statue first in 1966. The statue made of sandstone was lying horizontally on the ground and it was broken at the neck. Quite a lot of vandalism of these statues occurred to remove hidden treasures ('Nidhaana') secreted inside them. Mr.Premadasa our ex President was responsible to get this statue standing erect.

Trek to Lunugala Mountain, Passara (2018) - 2 of 8
Lunugala Mountain is located off Passara facing the gigantic Namunukula to the west. This is over 1,350m (4,430ft) in height and offers beautiful 360-degree panoramic views of Uva Province.
The entire mountain is formed by a combination of pink and white quartz thus the reason for it to be called Lunugala. She's also known as Lunubissa among the villagers due to some unknown reason.
Save for some Mana (elephant grass), grass and pine trees, there's no other vegetation to be seen on the mountain itself.
You can see the Loggal Oya, which originates from Namunukula Mountain Range, flowing along the Loggal Oya Valley towards Madolsima and later joins Loggal Oya Resservoir. Rural Village Kohonawala is bordered by Loggal Oya on one side.
Passara-Madolsima and Passara-Bibila Roads go either side of this mountain and once on the top, you can see towards Uva-Wellassa too.
In addition, you can easily see Gal Oya National Park & Senanayake Reservoir. Mountains in the east such as Wadinagala, Govinda Hela can also be seen from the top. Giant of Monaragala, Maragala Kanda Range, Buttala and Badalkumbura, Hadapanagala and parts of Wellawaya could be seen on a clear day.
Namunukula Range and Passara Town are clearly visible to the top while on the right Welimada Plains are visible through a gap.
Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make you aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin it. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it.
I also have a very kind and humble request to make. Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.
