Petwood Hotel - Woodhall Spa
The Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa Lincolnshire.
In the latter stages of the War the Hotel was used as the Officers Mess for the famous Dambusters, 617 Squadron, who were then based at nearby RAF Woodhall Spa.
In the extensive grounds can be found a dummy practice bouncing bomb, as was used in the Dambusters raid.
Inside the hotel, the Squadron Bar is dedicated to 617 Squadron and has memorabilia from the period.
Over the bar there is a branch of a tree. This was found impaled in the fuselage of a Lancaster.
Petwood Hotel, with its magnificent grounds, is now a favourite spot for wedding receptions.

The Dambusters 70 Years On (BBC Special)
On the night of 16th May 1943, nineteen Lancaster Bombers took off on a mission of courage and ingenuity, their plan was to drop the newly invented bouncing bombs on to German dams in order to flood the industrial heart of the Nazi war machine.
Seventy years on, veterans and their families gather to remember the raid and the bravery of the 133 men who undertook it. Tributes include Tornado jets from the current 617 Squadron, Spitfires and a Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain flying in to RAF Scampton, the home of the Dambusters, plus the Queen's Colour Squadron and the College Band of the RAF end the commemoration with a Sunset Ceremony

Dambusters Flypast Marks Raid Anniversary
A flypast over a reservoir in Derbyshire marks 70 years since the Dambusters destroyed key targets in World War II.The 70th anniversary of the Dambusters raid is being marked with a flypast featuring a Lancaster bomber, two Spitfires and two Tornado fast jets.
The famous aircraft is flying over the dam on Derwent Reservoir in Derbyshire and then over nearby Chatsworth House where the public are gathered to watch.
Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson the crews in the 19 aircraft made up of a coalition of the willing from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and one American, practised dropping the untested bouncing bomb from 60ft over the dam in the Peak District before flying on the actual mission on the evening of May 16, 1943. Their target was to destroy three dams in the Ruhr Valley to deliver a punch against Nazi Germany's industrial war machine.
They succeeded in breaching the Mohne and Eder dams and damaged the Sorpe but lost eight aircraft and 53 men doing so. Three were captured, becoming prisoners of war.
Later this evening, a Sunset Ceremony will be held at RAF Scampton where the Dambusters were based. This will be attended by three surviving veterans and the daughter of Barnes Wallis, the inventor of the Bouncing Bomb.

We are not Historians. We are two ordinary chaps who are learning about WW2 history and documenting our journey. We are exploring this period of history from the sides of both the Allies and Axis. Those with sympathetic views towards the Nazi regime or hold any type of extreme views are not welcome here on WW2 Nation.
