Japanese Manhole Covers: Drainspotting Adventure & Factory Tour ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Manhole covers are trending high in Japan and for good reason -- they're stunning! Only in Japan are manholes to cover sewage designed so beautifully that they now make MANHOLE TRADING CARDS! (Travel around Japan and collect them all. They're free!) The craze is real, folks.
There's even a new word for manhole enthusiasts: MANHOLERS
In this episode, John travels around the country as a manholer in search of Japan's best designs. He also visits Nagashima Imono Casting Factory where manhole covers are made and finds out why they have designs and are painted. He also visits the Manhole Summit for the latest news and designs.
FACTS ABOUT JAPANESE MANHOLE COVERS:
★ They were a way after WWII (World War 2) for Japan to spread the importance of its new sewer system project.
★ Okinawa (Naha city) was the first designed manhole in 1977. It had fish on it.
★ Now 95 % of all municipalities in Japan have customized manhole covers.
★ There are over 12,000 designs around Japan!
★ Manhole covers are sometimes painted for commemorative covers or for inside areas without vehicles like shopping arcades and parks. The paint used is a top secret mixture.
★ Designs represent local culture, history, mascots or sports teams: things citizens are proud of.
About Manhole Cards:
The cards are free and you have to physically go to each location to get one. It's first come, first serve.

Japanese Wagyu Beef Experience: Beyond Kobe ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Everyone has heard of Kobe Beef, the most famous beef in the world, but it's just one of many wagyu brands in Japan. In fact Japan has over 300 brands of beef, all with that amazing marbling and leanness you'd expect from premium graded A5 beef.
Every 5 years, Japan holds the Wagyu Olympics and Tottori Wagyu won the best beef competition this year.
Could Tottori prefecture have the new no.1 wagyu steaks - even better than Kobe or Matsuzaka!?
On a mission to find out, I traveled across Japan to Tottori Prefecture and the Mt. Daisen area near Yonago city to see if and what makes their beef so very tasty.
Mt. Daisen is called the Mt. Fuji of the west - and it looks it!
It has a history long history as a wagyu marketplace and the fertile grass and clean water and air lead to a great environment for the cattle. Ranch owners also make sure wagyu live stress free lives and care for them like children. They're very proud of the wagyu cattle.
THE PRINCIPLE OF ITADAKIMASU
But how do you love an animal like family - then eat it?
In Japan, people way ITADAKIMASU before eating - like saying grace at the dinner table with your family - and after learning about the deep meaning of the word, it makes sense why Japan in general has amazing food everywhere! Japanese really respect the food, the ingredients and show an amazing amount of respect and gratitude for the sacrifice required to cook to food. After 20 years, I had no idea just how deep the meaning of Itadakimasu was to people in Japan. Now, I have an entirely new way to see my food and I hope this segment of the video leaves a lasting impact on the way you see food too.

KOBE BEEF vs TOTTORI WAGYU
I tried both and to be honest, I have to say that I didn't taste a really big difference between Kobe and Daisen Kuroushi beef in the taste, not enough to pay 300% more for dinner.
On the flip side, eating Kobe Beef is an experience in itself, trying the most selective beef in the world. If that interests you, the experience is worth it.

Japan's Most Terrifying Bridge: Eshima Ohashi ★ ONLY in JAPAN #33
It's been nicknamed the ROLLER COASTER BRIDGE because of it's super steep slope and appearance of being a bridge to the sky.
That's the Eshima Ohashi Bridge straddling Shimane and Tottori prefecture in Japan.
Facts about the Eshima Ohashi:
★ 1,446 meters long
★ 250 meters of continupus concrete in the center (the third longest Ramen bridge in the world!)
★ 6.1% grade slope on the Shimane Prefecture side
★ 5.1% grade on the Tottori side
★ The bridge needed to be high in the center to allow large shops to pass under.
☆ From the Shimane side, you can get the optical illusion view at the end of the street by the sea.
☆ If you have a good telephoto lens, go even further to the other side of the sea for a better shot. (Map below)
The bridge has a good pedestrian footpath on both sides of the road.
Bicycles are not allowed on the footpath so stay on the main road with the car, to the left side.
There is an observation point on the top that offers sweeping views all the way to Daisen (mountain).
The closest major access point is Yonago Station and airport on the Sea of Japan. From there, take a train to Sakaiminato and rent a bicycle or grab a taxi.
Sakaiminato is also famous for Japanese anime and the main street is like a museum of monsters!
The bridge is a 20 minute ride from Sakai Minato.
Take food with you from the station.

Sedikit info mengenai Takashimaya Dept Store
The first Takashimaya store was opened in Kyoto in 1831 as a sole proprietorship owned by Shinshichi Iida, a merchant from present-day Fukui Prefecture.[2] The original store in Kyoto was only 3.6 square meters in area and specialized in selling gofuku (formal kimono). A second Kyoto store opened in 1893, followed by a Tokyo store in 1897 and an Osaka store in 1898.[3] Takashimaya was incorporated as a gomei kaisha (unlimited liability company) in 1909 and converted to a kabushiki kaisha (stock company) in 1919.[4]
Takashimaya began an export business in 1876, following the Meiji Restoration, and established an in-house trading unit in 1887.[2] By 1903 Takashimaya had offices in Paris and London and an export office in Yokohama.[3] The trading unit was spun off as a new stock company, Takashimaya-Iida (高島屋飯田株式会社), in 1913.[2] Takashimaya-Iida later merged with the trading company Marubeni.[5]
The chain saw a major expansion in the early 1930s. In 1931 it opened a 10, 20 and 50 sen store in Osaka, a predecessor of today's 100 yen store. Its flagship store in Namba, Osaka opened in 1932, and a second flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo opened in 1933. The Tokyo and Osaka stores were damaged by the firebombings of Tokyo and Osaka in 1945 but were not destroyed, and served as centers for logistics during the occupation of Japan.[4] Due to postwar regulations on the size of new stores, many Takashimaya locations opened from the 1950s onward, including its Yokohama and Yonago stores, were set up as separate companies.[3]
In 1958, Takashimaya opened a store in New York City which eventually occupied 37,000 square feet of floor space at 693 Fifth Avenue. The New York store closed in 2010 as Takashimaya chose to refocus on Asian markets amid struggling sales.[6]
In 1969, Takashimaya opened Japan's first American-style suburban shopping center near Futako-Tamagawa Station, to the southwest of Tokyo.[3]
Takashimaya Singapore - Bossini Store - Day 2 at Singapore
The Japanese department store industry went through a wave of consolidation during a revenue slump in the 2000s, with Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings (parent of Mitsukoshi and Isetan) becoming the largest player in the industry, followed by J. Front Retailing (parent of Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores). In 2008, Takashimaya announced plans to merge with H2O Retailing, the parent of the Osaka-based Hanshin Department Store and Hankyu Department Store chains, which would have formed the largest department store operator in Japan. Takashimaya and H2O entered into a cross-shareholding relationship prior to the merger, with each acquiring 10% of the other's stock, but announced the cancellation of their merger in 2010.[7]
