Danilo Perez and Ruben Blades ( and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute) in a spontaneous (amazing) performance at Danilo's Jazz Club at the American Trade Hotel in Casco Antiguo, Panama City, Panama.
The idea of the jazz club is to create opportunities for this type of educational exchange, with Danilo making salsa giant Ruben Blades sing a jazz standard and improvise on it. And Ruben, not only doing it well, but even brings his panamanian identity into the improvisation quoting the famous eucalyptus paste (for nose and cough) Vicks Vaporub (that in Spanish it almost sound like the bebop frase vick ba bu dup)

El Gran Concierto de Cierre del Panama Jazz Festival 2016 contó con la presencia de más de 20 mil personas, que se agruparon en el Cuadrángulo Central de Ciudad del Saber para disfrutar de un concierto familiar, abierto y gratuito para todo público.

The Panama Jazz Festival 2016 Grand Closing Concert was attended by over 20 thousand people who gathered at the City of Knowledge Central Quadrangle to enjoy a family concert, which was open and free to the public.

In this video interview I had with panamanian pianist and Panama Jazz Festival creator Danilo Pérez, we spoke about what inspired him to start the Festival and the Danilo Perez Fondation, how social change and education is like improvisation, it requires and open state of mind, creativity and collaboration, the evolution of PanaMonk over the years, the connection in between Monk's music and the music of Panama, a wow moment he had at the Montreal Jazz Fest with Wayne Shorter and why we should check out the Panama Jazz Festival.
