A treasure close to Spruce View
Stephansson House | Alberta Historical Site | Markerville | Canada
An historical Alberta landmark set a fall-coloured prairie landscape.
Stephan G. Stephansson – Poet of the Rocky Mountains – was born in Iceland in 1853. In 1889, he brought his family to Alberta near what is now the Markerville area. Within the view of the Rockies, he homesteaded with his family, farming by day and writing by night. Stephansson’s prolific literary output has helped make him one of the greatest poets in the western world.
Stephansson’s home is a snapshot in time: 1927 to be precise. With costumed interpreters helping bring this story to life, you’ll find beautiful original furnishings, wood burning stove, newspaper wallpaper, serene landscape, the smell of baking, and of course, the poetry of Stephansson himself.
About 7 km south, you can stop for ice cream at Historic Markerville Creamery Museum, and learn more about the Icelandic pioneer settlement experience. A few more minutes southwest, near Spruceview, you can enjoy the Dickson Store museum and the Danish Canadian National Museum, in the heart of the Danish immigrant settlement of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Assistant fire chief speaks out about tour
GROVES - by Haley Bull
Groves Assistant Fire Chief was back to work at the fire station Friday after a 6-month tour in Kuwait as a tech sergeant in the Texas Air National Guard.
We got to see a multiple coalition task force including the British, the French, Jordanians, of course the Kuwaitis, the Danish, Canadians, they were all there, Moore said.
Moore said the different nationalities were working together toward a common goal.
It just didn't matter which country you're from we had that common goal of we had to defeat ISIS and they continue to do it today, he said.
The Islamic extremist group released a video earlier this week showing a Jordanian pilot burned alive inside a cage while held by the terror organization.
It just affirmed to me the brutality and the simple fact that we need to be over there, Moore said. I know a lot of people say that we don't but I've been there twice and I can say that we do and if we don't stop them there we're gonna be fighting them here.
ISIS captured the pilot in December after a plane crash in Syria. Jordan is one of the nations taking part in the U.S. led coalition airstrikes against the terror group.
It was very sombering, very, very sombering, Moore said. When it happened you could even see the faces when he first was downed you could see their faces very upset, you know that's one of their colleagues and in turn, of course, them being in the coalition with the United States, it affects us too you know it's basically our friends that our getting hurt out there.
The men and women fighting alongside the Americans include the Jordanians.
They were very nice, some of them spoke English so I got to talk to them, matter of fact I gave some of them a care package that I got for Christmas, Moore said.
Moore said he shared dozens of care packages he received from Groves Middle School.
Got a little piece of Texas right there and had a little letter saying this was from Groves Middle School so they got a little taste from us, he said.
The piece of Southeast Texas shared across the globe, helping to build bridges during the fight to stop a brutal terror group.

Sami people
The Sami people, also spelled Sámi or Saami, are the indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Arctic area of Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Kola Peninsula of Russia, and the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. The Sámi are the only indigenous people of Scandinavia recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples, and are hence the northernmost indigenous people of Europe. Sami ancestral lands span an area of approximately 388,350 km2 , which is approximately the size of Norway, in the Nordic countries. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages and are classified as a branch of the Uralic language family.

SUMMARY
=======
Latvia ( or ( listen); Latvian: Latvija [ˈlatvija]), officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. Since its independence, Latvia has been referred to as one of the Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia in the northern region, Lithuania in the southern, to the east is Russia, and Belarus to the southeast, as well as sharing a maritime border with Sweden to the west. Latvia has 1,957,200 inhabitants and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi). The country has a temperate seasonal climate. After centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule, a rule mainly executed by the Baltic German aristocracy, the Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away and declared independence from Russia in the aftermath of World War I. However, by the 1930s the country became increasingly autocratic after the coup in 1934 establishing an authoritarian regime under Kārlis Ulmanis. The country's de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II, beginning with Latvia's forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union, followed by the invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941, and the re-occupation by the Soviets in 1944 to form the Latvian SSR for the next fifty years.
The peaceful Singing Revolution, starting in 1987, called for Baltic emancipation from Soviet rule and condemning the Stalinist regime's illegal takeover. It ended with the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia on 4 May 1990, and restoring de facto independence on 21 August 1991. Latvia is a democratic sovereign state, parliamentary republic and a very highly developed country according to the United Nations Human Development Index. Its capital Riga served as the European Capital of Culture in 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 119 administrative divisions, of which 110 are municipalities and 9 are cities. Latvians and Livonians are the indigenous people of Latvia. Latvian and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages.
Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. However, as a consequence of centuries of Russian rule (1710–1918) and later Soviet occupation, Latvia is home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia), some of whom (14.1% of Latvian residents) have not gained citizenship, leaving them with no citizenship at all. Until World War II, Latvia also had significant minorities of ethnic Germans and Jews. Latvia is historically predominantly Lutheran Protestant, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic. The Russian population are largely Eastern Orthodox Christians.
Latvia is a member of the European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe, the United Nations, CBSS, the IMF, NB8, NIB, OECD, OSCE, and WTO. For 2014, the country was listed 46th on the Human Development Index and as a high income country on 1 July 2014. A full member of the Eurozone, it uses the euro as its currency since 1 January 2014, replacing the Latvian lats.
