A Trip to Tranquebar | Tharangambadi | Fort Dansborg and other landmarks | Travel with Soudip
Tharangambadi formally tranqueber is in today's Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.you can only imagine the beauty of the place from its poetic name
Tharangambadi means land of the singing waves. Perhaps it was the sound of this singing waves which made the Danish build a massive Fort here so big was this Fort call Dansborg that it was only the second to the largest danish fort ever built in the history of Denmark
however the Danish East India company was not a financial success as a Danish Government and merchant had hoped it would be. of the 18 ships that Departed from Denmark between 1622 and 1637 only 7 returned. also the geographical location of the trunk river make it vulnerable to high tidal waves which keep destroying the buildings in the colony.
Tranquebar is 7 Km away from the port city of karaikal. You can reach Tranquebar through Nagapattinam and Pondicherry also.
Itenerary:

The Bungalow on the Beach, Tranquebar, Tamil Nadu
Tranquebar for the Danes! This picturesque coastal town lies 15 km south of the ancient Chola port of Pumpuhar, and 15 km north of the former French comptoir of Karikal. From 1620 to 1845 it was a Danish settlement ruled by Governors in Tranquebar, till the British took over its administration. The restored Bungalows stands as a reminder of a Danish Governor and an Admiral sent by the king of Denmark with two ships. Well received by the Nayak ruler of Tanjore and given this territory, the Danes built Dansborg Fort to export pepper to Denmark. The oldest Lutheran church in India was built here in 1706.

Rich history of Tharangambadi and the remnants of Danish influence- 2
Tharangambadi widely known as Tranquebar was called Alapur in a work of Tamil literature called Thevaram, written by Appar and Sundarar. This place is famous for tourist attractions such as the Danish Fort, Danish Museum, and the village itself. A Lutheran missionary, Bartholomeus Zeigenbalg, who was also a Tamil scholar, is buried in New Jerusalem Church. He was the person who set up country’s first printing press in 1712, and published the first Tamil translation of the New Testament in 1715, which was then translated into Hindustani. More than 300 Tamil books were published during this period.
