On board the electric boat Dapdune Belle. The river Wey was one of the first rivers in Britain to be made navigable being opened to canal boat traffic in 1653. This first 15-mile section of waterway linked Guildford to Weybridge on the River Thames thus giving access to markets for produce in London. In 1764 the opening of the Godalming Navigation gave access to an additional 4 miles upriver. The superb National Trust UK centre at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford gives the history and expresses the lives of the people that lived in this world of the “Navigations”.
This short video, that can give only a brief history of the navigations, was recorded on board the Dapdune Belle, an Electric boat kindly donated to the National Trust by Panasonic batteries.
Visitors can enter where the huge Wey barges were built and go aboard 'Reliance', one of the three surviving barges.
An extremely interesting day out that was aided by meeting so many kind, enthusiastic and obviously dedicated members of the National Trust. Thank you all very much ! ! !

Astolat Model Railway Circle Open Day Train Show - Dapdune Wharf Guildford 19/8/17 - Includes the following layouts:
Whitmoor - A freelance N gauge layout, 12' x 3'.
The layout has a continuous run, via a fiddle yard, on a double main line through station. Additional terminal platforms at one end of the station are intended for branch line traffic and suburban traffic to the big city. The track plan includes a goods yard and locomotive depot and fully automatic turntable. The layout is designed to be operated by 2, 3 or 4 operators.
The layout depicts a fictitious station which serves a small village and industrial park. It is notionally at the limit of commuter services up to the big city and thus has two terminus platforms to serve the local commuter trains and two through platforms for ongoing full-formation trains. It also has a modest goods yard and boasts a large MPD to supply loco changes for through services down to the country.
California Coast – Z gauge is set on the west coast of America
Designed and built by Dave Dawes in 2009, but now owned by Eric & Sandra Jones. Dave built the layout to show what can be achieved in Z scale. It is not set in any particular location, but has been built to try to give a feel of the California coast with trains running through the scenery. It has no time line, roughly the mid 1970's through to the present day. The layout is now 12 feet long by 18 inches wide. Stock running is a mixture of 'Marklin' [Germany] 'Micro Trains' and 'AZL' [USA].

Silvercrest Pit/Mine – 00/9 Gauge - This represents a typical quarry railway.
Ashbury Wharf – 00/9 Gauge – This was the first layout constructed by the Astolat MRC in the autumn of 1967. Originally a simple 00 gauge circuit with a couple of sidings. It was later converted to 00/9.

Errosion on the Wey Navigation Fiasco
This video is an attempt to get people to understand what damage is being done by speeding rainwater to the sea without consideration of the extremely high erosion occurring when 50% of the river cross section is removed and the water drops 7 feet to the river below the weir. Two years ago this problem was highlighted and all I get in return is 'we are trying to stop flooding'
Please note the voice over is not professional and being a rank amateur in these things there are differences in fact. the Wey Navigation was built in 1630's the Navigation towards Old buck weir is three metres deep while the Bowers Local 'cut' is one metre deep. The number of trees at risk or have since felled in or been cut down is 150 in 2017
It is intended to redo the voice over but I consider the threat to the river more important than polishing verbal commentary on a video demonstration of the problem.

Steam Boating on the River Wey.
This video was shot during the 2019 'Puffing a 'Wey' steam boat rally. This is an annual event held at Dapdune Wharf, which is a National Trust property in Guildford. The Steamboat Association of Great Britain is always very grateful to the National Trust for allowing them to hold this event and use their facilities on site.
For the technically minded, the boat is driven by a twin cylinder steam engine with cylinders of 2.5 bore & stroke. The exhaust from the engine passes through a condenser situated under the hull where it is turned back into water and returned to the boiler feed tank - so the water is constantly being re-cycled. To assist in extracting the water from the condenser, there is an engine driven pump, which has the additional benefit of creating up to 26 of vacuum on the exhaust side of the engine, which greatly increases its power and efficiency. In the video, the drive belt to this pump was slipping, so only 15 vacuum could be obtained. Steam is supplied by a three drum water tube boiler at up to 250psi, although 40psi is all the engine needs to give a cruising speed of 5 knots. Pressures above 150psi are however required for the whistle, which is an exact copy of the one on 'Mallard' - the world's fastest steam locomotive.
