Time lapse recordings of Zakynthos nesting beaches
Time lapse recording denotes the video technique of speeding up time by taking a photo frame every few seconds and playing back all the frames in a normal rate (usually 24 frames per second). Combined with a high sensitivity camera and the natural moon light, this technique is capable of recording the night nesting activity of sea turtles with no use of artificial lights. Time lapse recording has already been used successfully by the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refugee in Florida for a variety of purposes. Here, we present a series of time lapse videos of nesting loggerhead turtles in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos that were recorded during the 2013 and 2014 nesting seasons.

Solitamente la schiusa delle uova di questa specie in via di estinzione avviene durante la notte, in caso contrario la sabbia rovente le disidraterebbe in breve tempo. E' un' emozione unica assistere a questo spettacolo della natura!

Dafni beach offers visitors the chance to see some of Zakynthos's wildlife first hand. The beach is protected by the Zakynthos National Park, as the Caretta Caretta turtles which the island is famed for choose to nest their eggs here. This means some areas of the beach are off limits to the public. Access to the beach is limited because of the Turtles, and a free mini-bus is provided to the only entry point.

From dusk till dawn: Loggerhead sea turtles nesting on Zakynthos
Immerse yourself into the empty and quiet beaches of Zakynthos, where loggerhead sea turtles come to lay their nests during the warm greek summer nights. Relax by listening only to natural sounds of the beach: the waves, the wind, the crickets and of course the characteristic heavy breathing sound of the loggerheads.
You can also see some of the volunteers of ARCHELON - the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, during their work of collecting data of nesting females.
Filmed only using the natural light of the full moon.

Time lapse movie of nesting loggerhead turtles, Sekania beach, Zakynthos, Greece, July 2013.
This is a time-lapse movie created from 4.138 frames, taken on Sekania beach, Zakynthos, Greece, the night of 22-23 of July (another super full moon). The camera was set up at the far east part of the beach which is full of stones in order to avoid possible collision with an emerging turtle. This part of the beach is also the busiest!
This is a night survey conducted by ARCHELON volunteers in order to tag, measure and mark nests of nesting loggerheads, see archelon.gr
Turtle action starts at 0:48! There were quite late that night...
Each frame was taken at ISO 51200, f/8 and 1/2 second exposure, with a 50mm lens.
The first frame was taken at 22:07:34 and the last one at 04:53:24 thus covering almost 7 hours of action in 3 minutes.
However the first battery run out at 02:13 and did not realise it till 03:13, thus missing 1 full hour of action (you can tell that at of the video) :(. Amateur mistake, my first trial though, hopefully It will never happen again.
Time lapse recording techniques are of course well known to photographers but the use of it in a nesting beach is relative new.
The idea came by watching these videos:
The last video shows this technique used by Archie Carr National Wildlife refuge in Florida.
It was presented in the last sea turtle symposium in Baltimore 2013 and this is the corresponding abstract:
A NON-INVASIVE APPROACH TO DOCUMENTING HUMAN INTERACTIONS WITH NESTING SEA TURTLES Ray Mojica & David Godfrey, Barrier Island Ecosystem Center & Sea Turtle Conservancy
During the summer of 2011, staff of the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program in Melbourne Beach, Florida received funding though the Sea Turtle License Plate Grants Program to conduct a first of it's kind study of sea turtle nesting utilizing high ISO cameras to capture images of the beach that look as if they were captured during the day. The 60 day study was conducted at the Barrier Island Center (BIC) in South Melbourne Beach within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) and coincided with the guided sea turtle walks which are conducted through the Center. The study resulted in the collection of nearly 500,000 individual images, which were combined into a movie. This movie documented the behavior of hundreds of nesting sea turtles in a way never before seen. The methodology was successful in documenting the behavior of nesting turtles and human interactions with these turtles.
In Zakynthos this is the second attempt ever, the first was done by Dionysis Arvanitakis here:
The most amazing turtle video of that kind is here (I think it is only available in UK), Raine island, Australia with thousands of green turtles nesting at the same time!
