Daqing: Oil City | Spartan Wanderer
Daqing is a small Chinese city in the middle of the country’s largest oilfield and the world’s fourth most productive. The infrastructure required for the oil snakes its way throughout the city like veins. Oil pumpjacks groan in city parks, pipelines hang over major highways and the fires of refineries can be seen from a kindergarten’s windows. Here’s just a small sample of some pumpjacks in and around the City Forest Park.

Siberian Tigers returned to Hua'nan Forest in Heilongjiang Province
Hua'nan Forest in Heilongjiang province was recently the site of 2 murders. The victims were 2 cows and the perpetrators were Siberian Tigers. Now this attack brought around mixed reactions. On one hand, villagers got scared for their safety, but animal conservationists rejoiced to know that Siberian tigers have migrated back to this area. The last time that forest keepers found trails of the Siberian Tiger was about 19 years ago.
Since the tigers became endangered 30 years ago, China has begun a number of breeding programs and the most successful was the one held at the Heilongjiang Siberia Tiger Park, which was home to 800 Siberian Tigers. However deforestation made the Siberian Tigers leave again to find other homes and were all gone by the 90s. The good news is that with new regulations to protect the forest Siberian Tigers are beginning to come back. The forest keepers believe that the reason Siberian Tigers have become endangered is because of human influence and they hope that we can give them a second chance.

Dancers of Daqing
You are looking at a video of my “dancing ladies.” I met them in a park in Daqing (Taching), a city in Heilongjiang Province. I was immediately intrigued by them, they wore military style costumes and I learned they practice in Tai Hong King Garden Park Plaza every night. Most of these women are in their 40’s to their 60’s and many of them retired. The dance troop is a way to remain active and experience new things. They are from a generation that grew up and had families under China’s one child policy. As I observed them over my months in Daqing. I wondered if their commitment to their dance stems from the fact they have only one child or no child, like Elisa in Steinbeck’s “The Crysanthemums.” The two main characters I met Colonel Kong and her sister. (Women with red glasses) They both seemed to me they have discovered the fountain of youth. Eternal teenagers dancing the night away. Even though I left China over a year ago I remain friends with these ladies through WeChat. My dream is to return and do a documentary on these fascinating “Dancing Ladies of Daqing.” I feel they symbolize a unique generation in China and tell the history of China’s one child policy in a personal way.
