Daqing: Oil City | Spartan Wanderer
Daqing is a small Chinese city in the middle of the country’s largest oilfield and the world’s fourth most productive. The infrastructure required for the oil snakes its way throughout the city like veins. Oil pumpjacks groan in city parks, pipelines hang over major highways and the fires of refineries can be seen from a kindergarten’s windows. Here’s just a small sample of some pumpjacks in and around the City Forest Park.

Daqing Petrochemical Industry
Charles Chaw, producer of 6 episodes Inside China Next Powerhouse, presents the opportunities of Northeastern China. In this Part 2 of the last episode: Besides oil, Daqing also has plenty of natural gas resource. With the depleting oil resource, Daqing Oil Field has paid more attention to gas exploration. They calculate that by increasing gas production, their combined oil and gas output can be maintained at 40 million tones till 2020. Nevertheless, like all aging oil fields in the world, it will get more and more difficult to extract oil as time goes by. Something more needs to be done. For a major oil city, naturally, the first thought is to strengthen the related petrochemical industry.
Crude oil found in Daqing, typically has a low sulfuric content. This makes Daqing's crude more suitable for process into a wide variety of petrochemical products. Daqing aims to be China's largest petrochemical industry center. Its refineries are able to distill more than ten major product categories, with over 160 varieties. Examples of such products include, chemical fertilizers, acrylic fibers, lubricants and even aviation kerosene for both China's air force and overseas exports.
Daqing's economy is heavily built around the oil industry and the government cannot just rely on the petrochemical industry alone. The clock is ticking, and Daqing knows that it has to reinvent itself. In 1992 the Daqing government set up the Daqing High Technology Development Zone, to spearhead the city's move away from oil. Companies that base their operations in the development zone can expect a wide range of policy support, like tax incentives and financial support. This high -- tech development zone looks set a win the hearts of the investors.

China - Oil Reserves Discovered
T/I: 10:48:08
Chinese geologists have discovered huge oil reserves in the remote
prefecture of Aksu in Xinjiang province. The size of France, they
will solve the country's energy problems and provide relief well
into the next century. The Tarim Basin, of which Aksu province
forms an important section, is situated at the edge of the
Taklimakan Desert in Northwest China. It is being described as the
future North Sea of Central Asia. At 560,000 square kilometres,
the Tarim Basin contains one of the few huge oil reserves yet to
be exploited.

Live: Transformation of resource-based cities 中国资源型城市转型
Like many cities in China, Daqing is a typical resource-based city with the largest oil production base in China. Daqing is working vigorously to build a living-friendly environment and diversify its industrial systems. Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing Co Ltd was officially established in 2013. The World Record Certification Agency recognized Daqing as the largest graffiti art district in the world. These examples show Daqing's transformation as a resource-based city. CGTN brings you the story of this kind of transformation in Daqing and another city in China. #PanoramicChina #70YearsThriving

Shopping in Saerto District, Daqing, China.
I needed a thick foam layer for the bed because many mattresses in China are very firm and I wake up with a very stiff back, so my girlfriend and I headed down to the Saerto District with some friends and this is the result of our search.
Thank you Sophia for filming this.
Dancers of Daqing
You are looking at a video of my “dancing ladies.” I met them in a park in Daqing (Taching), a city in Heilongjiang Province. I was immediately intrigued by them, they wore military style costumes and I learned they practice in Tai Hong King Garden Park Plaza every night. Most of these women are in their 40’s to their 60’s and many of them retired. The dance troop is a way to remain active and experience new things. They are from a generation that grew up and had families under China’s one child policy. As I observed them over my months in Daqing. I wondered if their commitment to their dance stems from the fact they have only one child or no child, like Elisa in Steinbeck’s “The Crysanthemums.” The two main characters I met Colonel Kong and her sister. (Women with red glasses) They both seemed to me they have discovered the fountain of youth. Eternal teenagers dancing the night away. Even though I left China over a year ago I remain friends with these ladies through WeChat. My dream is to return and do a documentary on these fascinating “Dancing Ladies of Daqing.” I feel they symbolize a unique generation in China and tell the history of China’s one child policy in a personal way.
