The World's Most Dangerous Journey - Part 1
The World's Most Dangerous Journey: Lawless and uncharted, the Darien Gap is the world's most dangerous migrant trail. Refugees must face treacherous waters, unrelenting jungle, bandits and guerrillas on their journey from Colombia to the USA. A report by SBS Dateline. WATCH PART 2 HERE:
We've had no food for four days and only river water to drink. We've had so much trouble, we haven't slept for eleven days, cries a desperate Bangladeshi refugee. The jungle is merciless and cruel. These refugees have fled political persecution in Nepal and Bangladesh. In Bangladesh they cut us. Here, and here, they chopped us here, they chopped us and we had to leave. That's why we had to come to the jungle. Having landed in Brazil a month before, the refugees have travelled overland through Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, to Colombia. Most refugees stop off at the village of Bijao, the gateway to the most dangerous part of the Darien Gap. A migrant trafficking economy had opened up. Locals sell supplies to the travellers and guide them from there to the border with Panama. It's a risky business, but brings much needed capital into the community, which lacks schools and healthcare. Here, people die from treatable diseases such as malaria. Panama has now closed its border to all migrants, but undoubtedly a new gap will be found and the flow will continue.

The End of the Road in Panama
MIRADOR ADVENTURES: Darien Gap, Part 2 (Panama)
This is the 2nd part of our video travelogue in Darién. We went to Manené what is a small embera community in the red zone. This is the last police station in Panama but get here as a tourist is forbidden. A pair of soldiers were following us to the fortress.
After we returned to Pueblo Nuevo where we joined the casique, the big man, to haunt animals in the forest. In the afternoon the women were dancing for us.

Driving the Pan-American Highway from Panama to Colombia - Not the Darien Gap, via a Container Ship
Full blog post -
The Darien Gap between Panama (Central America) and Colombia (South America) is a 60 mile break in the Pan-America Highway. A road that connects Alaska at the top of North America to Tierra del Fuego at the bottom of South America. There are no roads through the Darien Gap and you can't drive between these two countries. This means that vehicles have to be shipped.
Here's video of our truck being loaded (stuffed) into a container in Colon, Panama and heading out of the container port in Cartagena, Colombia. Sadly I fudged the footage of the car being driven out of the container in Colombia.

Panama City to Yaviza drive. Yaviza is the last town East of Panama City where the road ends and the Darien Gap begins. This is where the Pan-American road is interrupted by a few dozen kilometres of dense jungle.
Visiting Yaviza (2 of 3)
A quick look around Yaviza, in the Panamanian province of Darien which borders Colombia.
The city the southeastern end of the Pan-American Highway and the where the amazing Darien Jungle begins, an area renowned for its history of drug running, kidnapping, weapons smuggling, and anti-government guerrilla activity,
Yaviza is located on the junction of two major rivers, Río Chucunaque and Rio Tuira. On Dec 20, 2010 Yaviza was flooded and the whole city when under water.
In the video you will see the rivers and how much water it must have taken to make it break their extremely high banks.

Visiting Yaviza (1 of 3)
I had the fortune of meeting a very nice man in Panama City called Jose Peña, a native of Panama, who originated from Darien Province that borders Colombia.
He told me he has not been there for 20 years and was eager to go to visit old friends and family and invited me to go with him.
Jose's brother, a police officer / soldier with Senafront and his wife gave us a bed for the few days we were there and took great care of us. This video gives you a little insight into a typical morning in the house of the people of Yaviza, and not unlike many parts of Panama's interior.
