Toy Train, Darjeeling, India: The narrow gauge train, opened in 1881, is listed as the Mountain Steam Railways of India World Heritage Site in 1999, only the second railway to have this honour bestowed upon it. This extremely popular tourist train runs from Darjeeling to Ghum, India's highest railway station, through Batasia Loop stop which has a Gorkha Memorial.
During peak season, tickets must be booked in advance, the journey takes around 2 hrs, and is a top attraction of Darjeeling.

Riding the Toy Train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) has always remained a coveted experience to the tourists. Only few would let go such an opportunity. And there is a clear reason why so. After all this Toy Train has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status, and that's for something special.
Operating on narrow gauge tracks since 1880s and providing an important transport link to various parts of Darjeeling hills and lower plains, the Toy Train is still unmatched when it comes to absorbing magnificent beauty of the mountains.
Where else can you find a small steam engine pulling mini coaches up the steep mountains through breathtaking landscapes and overcoming almost impossible curves and gradients using sheer engineering ingenuity and creative skills. The snail pace at which the train moves through the hilly terrain is at times so slow that you can often see the local school children hopping on and off the train on the move.
Although the diesel engines used these days are faster and more powerful, the original steam engines still operate in some sections of DHR and also for joyrides. The steam loco drawn trains sometimes tend to skid in steep gradients. You can often see an attendant standing in front of the engine and sprinkling sand on the track to overcome such difficulties, particularly during monsoon time.

Outside perspective of the full journey of the Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway route between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. My friend Natarajan and I followed the train from Siliguri Junction to Ghoom on a hired scooter. From a hot, dusty December morning, we ended up with a rain soaked cold evening, all the while constantly clicking still pics as well as videos.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is other wise referred to as Darjeeling Toy Train have most number of services between Darjeeling and Ghum and couple of Tourist specials from Kurseong as well. But just one daily train runs between New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Toy Train, is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km (55 mi) long. It climbs from about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Six diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum — India's highest railway station — and the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Steam-enthusiast specials are hauled by vintage British-built B-Class steam locomotives. The railway's headquarters are at Kurseong.
On 2 December 1999, UNESCO declared the DHR a World Heritage Site. Two more railway lines were later added, and the site became known as one of the mountain railways of India.

All the steam locomotives currently in use on the railway are 0-4-0 ST B-Class, built by Sharp, Stewart and Company and later the North British Locomotive Company between 1889 and 1925. A total of 34 were built, but by 2005 only 12 were still in use or being repaired by the railway.
The DHR purchased the third Garratt locomotive built, a D Class 0-4-0+0-4-0 T, in 1910. Only one DHR steam locomotive has been taken out of India: No. 778 (originally No. 19). After many years out of use at the Hesston Steam Museum, it was sold to an enthusiast in the UK and restored to working order. Now on a private railway (the Beeches Light Railway in Oxford shire), it has run on the Stiffening Railway, the Launceston Steam Railway and the Leigh ton Buzzard Light Railway.
Route
The line follows Hill Cart Road, which is part of National Highway 110. The track is on the roadside for long stretches, and both track and road might be blocked by a rock slide. Since a length of the road is flanked with buildings, the railway line often resembles urban tramway tracks. To warn pedestrians and drivers of an approaching train, engines are equipped with very loud horns which train drivers sound almost constantly.

• New Jalpaiguri (NJP): New Jalpaiguri was the terminus of the 1964 southern extension to meet the new 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge line to Assam.
• Siliguri Town: The line's original southern terminus
• Siliguri Junction: Siliguri Junction became a major station when a new line was built to Assam during the early 1950s. From NJP to Siliguri Junction, the 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge line runs parallel to the DHR.
• Sukna: This station begins a change in the landscape, from flat plains to the wooded lower slopes of the mountains. The gradient of the railway changes dramatically. Loop 1, in the woods above Sukna, was removed after flood damage in 1991 and the site is obscured by the forest.
• Rangtong: A short distance above Rangtong is a water tank, better positioned than at the station in terms of water supply and distance from other water tanks. Loop 2 was removed in 1942 after flood damage. A new reverse, No. 1, was added for the longest reverse run. Loop No. 3, at Chunbatti, is now the lowest loop. Reverses No. 2 and 3 are between Chunbatti and Tindharia.
• Tindharia: Workshops are below the station. An office for engineers and a large locomotive shed are on a separate site. Above the station are three sidings, used to inspect the carriage while the locomotive is changed before the train continues towards Darjeeling.
• Loop 4: Known as Agony Point, the loop has the line's tightest curve.

• Kurseong: Although a shed and several sidings are adjacent to the main line, the station proper is a dead end. Darjeeling-bound trains must back out of the station (across a busy road junction) to continue the climb. The station houses a one-room DHR museum with several exhibits, artifacts and vintage photos. At the centre of the room, a wooden showcase contains several old newspaper articles about the railway. After the station, the railway passes a busy shopping area.

• Jorebungalow: A storage point for tea bound for Kolkata, it connects Darjeeling to the rest of India.
• Ghum: Ghum, the line's summit, is India's highest station. The station building includes a first-floor museum, with larger exhibits in the old goods yard.
• Batasia Loop: The loop is 5 km (3.1 mi) from Darjeeling, below Ghum. There is a memorial to the Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who sacrificed their lives after Indian independence in 1947. The loop has a panoramic view of Darjeeling, with Kangchenjunga and other snow-capped mountains in the background.

Ghum is the highest altitude station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Rail track. Altitude of Ghum is 2225.7 meters (7407 ft). Here the toy train stops for 30 minutes for a visit to Darjeeling Himalayan Railway museum. The DHR Museum is located at the station premises. The highlight here is the oldest toy train engine - The Baby Sivok. The entree fee to the museum is included in the ticket price. DHR sends by post a certificate validating your ride on the toy train so that you can cherish the memories of your ride.
Ghum is at a distance of 63 km form Siliguri town. Local tourist vehicles and shared jeeps are easily accessible. One can also take a toy train ride up to Ghum station that will take you through the twists and turns of the Darjeeling hills.
Toy Train Joyride - Darjeeling to Ghum & Back
Toy train joy rides operate from Darjeeling Railway Station. It's a 2-hour round trip from Darjeeling up to Ghum and back covering a total distance of 14kms. There are several such round trips during the day starting in the morning. Number of rides per day depends on the demand during the month or the season. The train stops for 10 minutes at the Batasia Loop.
DHR Ghum Museum
It is one of the three museums of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways. It's located at the Ghum railway station premises. The museum room is right above the Ghum station. Right opposite the Ghum platform, there is the entry gate to the museum premises. As you enter through the gate, there is an open space with a small garden around.
If you plan to take the Toy Train Joy Ride from Darjeeling which comes to Ghum and goes back, then this DHR Ghum Museum will be part of the ride. The train stops at the Ghum station for a while and passengers are given free entry to the museum.
Open Hours
The DHR Ghum Museum is open between 10am to 1:30pm and again from 2pm until 4pm. There is an entry fee (Rs. 20/- per person, subject to change).

I took my joy ride from Darjeeling to GHOOM station. It stops at Batashia loop for clicking photographs and 25 minutes break at the worlds highest altitude station GHOOM to visit the railway museum. Tickets are expensive and difficult to get. So book tickets well in advance through IRCTC.
