Germany’s Black Forest: The Tourist Trap and the Bliss
This two-part clip from the Black Forest illustrates how, wherever you travel, you can have dramatically different experiences in the same destination. Most travelers, driven by “bucket lists,” get sucked into the highly promoted tourist trap version of a place. (In the Black Forest, they end up in Titisee — part one of this clip.) Some, however, step away from the commercial zone (so expert at bamboozling travelers and corrupting the industry) and manage to reach that “off the beaten path” dimension of the same sight (part two of this clip).
The sad reality is that the vast majority of visitors to Europe’s most-dreamed-about destinations have their romantic vision trampled by mobs of travelers on big bus tours and cruises. (Here in the Black Forest, it’s river cruises.) And the even sadder reality is that most don’t even realize the lost opportunity. The goal for us “Back Door travelers”: to turn our travel dreams into a pristine and unforgettable reality. Black Forest

A driving tour of the Black Forest in southern Germany, firstly staying at Titisee in the south, from where we visit Triberg and it's waterfalls, Waldkirch and the city of Freiburg. We then visit the nearby Lake Schluchsee, Altglashutten, Lenzkirch and Loffingen. Travelling north, we then pass through St Margen, St Peter and Haslach, before reaching our second base in the north of the Forest at Durbach. From here we visit the towns of Offenburg, Hausach, and Villingen, and the lovely villages of Gengenbach and Schiltach.

Munich City 1945 in Colour - Old City
The film shows the city center of Munich in May 1945 with the Karlsplatz, the town hall, the dome and the Odeonsplatz. You see th Feldherrnhalle where the Nazis had placed an emblem to commemorate the Beer Hall Putsch of November 1923. The graffiti says: KZ (Concentration Camps) Dachau - Velden - Buchenwald. I am ashamed to be a German.
Through the Allied air raids in World War II Munich city is heavily damaged. At 74 airstrikes 6,632 residents are killed and 15,800 wounded. Munich's old town was destroyed to 90%, the entire city to 50%.
William Wyler directed the shootings in Germany on colour film for the US Air Force. The film has never been completed and published.

HITLER HANGOUT AT HINTERBRUHL BEER GARDEN - Munich, Germany - Leonard Does Europe S1 E14
Gasthof Hinterbrühl is a scenic restaurant and beer garden located on the banks of the Isar River, and is a very pleasant 20 or so minute walk from WaWi. Unfortunately, the beer garden was closed due to cold weather, but the restaurant was open, so we enjoyed a great meal and a few beers inside.
According to The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich, Hinterbrühl was a favorite hangout of Hitler, Göring, and Goebbels. In fact, after Göring committed suicide, his ashes, and those of ten other Nazi war criminals, were thrown into the stream that runs alongside the beer garden. However, there is no trace of any Nazi history in the restaurant - I never would have known about it if it wasn't for the book.
While in Munich, we made a point to go to as many authentic beer gardens as possible, which often meant traveling outside of the tourist areas via public transportation. The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich by Larry Hawthorne was indispensable in helping us figure out which beer gardens were worth going to, and in showing us exactly how to get to them. Plus, it has coupons for free beer!!!

Feel the Middle Ages in the medieval Old Town of Rothenburg in Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber - that beautiful little town on the Romantic Road is for tourists the epitome of German cities. The Altstadt (Old Town) is a patchwork of winding cobbled lanes lined with picturesque half timbered houses.

Massive towers like Röderturm and the intact city walls form a ring around the Old Town and you can walk on top of it to get great views over the city and the Tauber valley.
No other town in Germany brings you closer to the spirit of the Middle Ages - especially the medieval festivals like the so called Master's draught let you truly get in touch with its moving history. If you like to get some impressions of this festival Master's draught, start the slideshow on the right side.
What makes Rothenburg ob der Tauber even more exciting is its reputation as town of eternal Christmas. All year round lots of shops offer beautiful handcrafted Christmas gifts and souveniers. In December the town gets realy crowded, because nobody wants to miss the famous Christmas Market, one of the most romantic ones in Germany.

One of the most taken pictures of Rothenburg Germany is the Plönlein fork, a famous landmark.
Pass the Plönlein, that scenic fork in the road is the landmark of the town. Head for the market place and climb the platform of the nice Town Hall to get impressive views. Then you shouldn't miss the idyllic Burggarten (Rothenburg castle garden).
A major pilgrimage site is the gothic church St.Jacob. Its main attraction is the Heilige Blut Altar (Holy Blood Altar) carved by Tilman Riemenschneider, said to contain a drop of Christ's blood.

Famous events: the historic festival Meistertrunk takes you back in the Middle Ages with parades in traditional costumes.
Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village: Countless handcrafted Christmas decorations and ornaments of wood and glass, twinkling lights and nutcrackers as well as many other souvenirs can be bought. But be careful, prices are accordingly high!
Great attractions of Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Dive into the time of Thirty Year's War by visiting the historical vaults of the Town Hall with dark dungeons and exhibitions or go to the Crime Museum, which shows the Middle Ages from the dark side with instruments of torture, execution items, weapons etc.
The historic festival Meistertrunk (on Whitsuntide) takes you back in the Middle Ages with parades in traditional costumes, a medieval market and a field camp. They celebrate the event from 1631, when the city council rescued the town by taking the challenge to empty 3 1/4 liter of wine in one gulp!

Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in Southwest Germany
Schwarzwald, or in english The Black Forest is located in the southwest corner of Germany in the German federal-state of Baden-Württemberg. The Black Forest is a mountainous terrain at about 200-1500 meters above sea level, the highest point being the Feldberg at 1493 m.
This ancient forest is famous for its legends and the black fir trees that dot the landscape. While not particularly high, the mountains offer a wonderful place to go hiking or mountain biking with well-marked trails. Maps available from the tourist offices. There are a few skiing resorts as well offering average but crowded conditions.
The region is famous for its cuckoo clocks, watchmaking, skiing and tourism. There is a large high-tech light engineering industry in the region stemming from the gold-mining and watchmaking days. Almost all tourists are from Germany and Switzerland; the region's tourist industry is therefore not well equipped to deal with guests who don't speak German.
The most important destination in the Schwarzwald is called Titisee, which is a medium-sized lake with associated tourist village and hotels, with very nice views and generally very relaxed and healthy activities. From here it is a short journey to Lake Constance and the city of Konstanz, or to see the Rhein Waterfall at Neuhausen in Switzerland.
Accommodations in the main tourist areas may be cheaper than many of the quaint smaller towns and villages. For a nice hut at a reasonable price, look for a privately-operated Gasthaus, which can be found in villages throughout the area. There are many pleasant surprises waiting, often with excellent home-cooked food and special service, often provided by the family living there for many generations.

WALKING THE FOOTSTEPS OF WWII IN MUNICH
Day 2 of our European adventure was all about exploring the history of Munich and understanding the role it’s played throughout history. Munich was the birthplace of the German Worker’s Party, which evolved into the Nazi Party, and therefore, was the site of many key moments and places during World War II. Though we don’t typically book tours ahead in a city, because we like to uncover and explore on our own, we knew that its stronghold as a powerful city during WWII left both of us wanting to learn and understand as much as we could from someone who could give us a deeper insight.
Though it seemed like we were going to be on time to meet our tour guide and fellow tour group members, we all of a sudden realized we were running about 15 minutes late…which is not good if there is a group of people waiting for you. By the time we got to the meeting sight, they were gone by 20 minutes already, but the lady in the box office gave us the idea to go to Hofbrauhaus (where we had been the night before) and look for the group there, as that was one of the stops on the tour. We hustled over there and looked all over (we had been told to look upstairs), in every room and patio we could find. We were ready to give up when we were told there was a third floor and we dashed up there only to find a group of people on an English-speaking tour! The guide didn’t really seem to know or care if we belonged, but we joined anyways as he continued to show us numerous historical places throughout Munich, including where people attempted to dodge the SS police, where Hitler gave speeches, the Nazi headquarters and monuments and memorials to the lives lost during WW2.
It was a little unnerving to be in the city where so much of this darkness began and was fostered, but the tour was full of interesting stories and tidbits and we were really glad we had gone. After the tour ended, we continued to walk throughout the city and explore. We ran into a Great Dane named Snowy who loved Kate and who was as tall as she was up on his hind legs. We drank coffee, found yummy pastries and ended the day at an outdoor market, stocking up on delicious cheese, meat, and fruits for our trip the next day to Salzburg and Vienna. We were exhausted but felt like we had really gotten to understand Munich! What a neat, historical and vibrant city!
