How Cottage industry replaced farming in Darkot Munsiyari
A talk with an old native resident of the remote area to find out why an entire village is sustaining itself via the cottage industry and farming exports have dwindled. The villagers are resorting to packed and processed grains and local produce is negligible.
Towards the end she claims that Bengali people practically live there! Hats off to the exploration spirit of Bengali folks :)

Tribal Heritage Museum Munshyari
a one of its kind museum in Munsiyari provides a glimpse into the history and culture of Bhotiya tribe of Uttarakhand. The curator and owner of the museum Sher Singh Pangtey, fondly called Massab, established the Tribal Heritage Museum before the soaring Panchachauli peaks in 2000.
Pangtey, author of numerous books on Uttarakhand's history, folk and culture, has knocked on various doors in the upper Himalayan villages to personally collect the items in his museum. The passionate octogenarian narrates the history behind each object as he guides the scholars and tourists who visit the museum in their tour.
The museum is believed to be one of its kind to showcase the mountain tribe by a private individual in the country.
The Bhotiyas lived in the upper Himalayan valleys of Uttarakhand. They were primarily traders and involved in the Indo-Tibetan trade. But when the trade stopped after 1962 due to Indo-China war, they were left without any job. The government later on recognised the tribe as Scheduled Tribe and offered them benefits in education and service industry, Pangtey said.
With more and more Bhotiyas getting into government jobs through quotas, they never came back to the village and the culture has died. All the Bhotiya villages are now empty. Only a few people remain who collect medicinal herbs. There are only ITBP posts guarding the places where virtually nothing exists, he said.
The idea of the museum came to Pangtey, a native of Milam village, when he was a history teacher in Munsiyari.
Bhotiyas now live in big cities like Delhi, Dehradun, Haldwani. They are disconnected from their culture and society. They don't speak their original language or eat the local cuisine or wear their traditional dress. So I thought of building a museum where the lost culture society of the tribe would be preserved, said Pangtey.
Pangtey started collecting thousands of items displayed at the museum in 1985, eleven years before he retired as a history teacher from Munsiyari Inter-college.
People were throwing items because plastic and metal came to use. I collected the items from individual houses of many villages, he said.
The museum, which is registered as a society and occasionally receives funds from the government's cultural department, features wooden items used by the Bhotiya tribe. These include bowls, kettles, saucers, cooking pots, spoons, dispensers, and vanity boxes made of strong and durable wood from the Shangar tree. Also showcasing wooden and brass hookahs, wine bottles and bags made of yak skin, the museum is a mirror to a culture that has faded away with time.
