Strauss brings modern and contemporary art to NAF
Strauss & Co is pleased to announce its participation in this year’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown (28 June – 8 July 2018), where it will present an exhibition of modern and contemporary art in the Alumni Gallery of the Albany History Museum. The exhibition is curated by art specialist Matthew Partridge and will present a selection of works on offer at the company’s forthcoming sales.
The exhibition will include two pastels by much-loved landscape painter and auction stalwart J.H. Pierneef, an interior scene by pioneering New Group painter Freida Lock and a stirring Cape landscape by the late modern Erik Laubscher. Works by contemporary artists Matthew Hindley, Banele Khoza, Mary Sibande, Minnette Vári and Diane Victor will be shown in conjunction with these recognized past masters.
The contemporary selection also includes a large-scale portrait by painter Mustafa Maluka, which will go on offer at Strauss & Co’s specialist contemporary art auction in February 2019. Successfully inaugurated this past February, Strauss & Co’s contemporary art sale is the first sale of its kind in South Africa dedicated only to contemporary art.
Matthew Partridge will host public walkabouts of the exhibition on 29 and 30 June, in both instances at noon, and again on 6 July at 4pm. Partridge will also present a public lecture in the NELM Seminar Room at the Monument on 6 July at noon. His lecture forms part of the National
Arts Festival’s Think!Fest programme and looks at aspects of South Africa’s thriving secondary market, notably the growth of contemporary art at auction.

In Pursuit of Wildlife Conservation: The Art of Jay N. Darling and Maynard Reece
The fine art prints of Jay N. Darling (1876-1962) and oil paintings of Maynard Reece (b. 1920) explore the mutual interests of wildlife conservation.
At age nineteen, aspiring artist Maynard Reece was introduced to Jay N. Darling, Pulitzer Prize winning, syndicated cartoonist; nationally acclaimed conservationist, and fine artist. Darling soon became Reece's aesthetic mentor commenting on the younger artist's images of wildlife and native landscapes. They became colleagues and friends for the next twenty-three years.
This exhibition includes 75 etchings by Jay N. Darling, including Darling's original 1934 Duck Stamp and etching, and 48 paintings by Maynard Reece, including the five drawings and paintings for the Federal Duck Stamps, and a newly commissioned painting by Iowa State University to commemorate the Reece-Darling relationship with wildlife conservation.
The Jay N. Darling prints in this exhibition were gifts to the Brunnier Art Museum, from the J. N. Ding Darling Foundation, Inc. The etching plates were generous gifts of Christopher Koss, grandson of J. N. Darling and president of the Darling Foundation.
The Maynard Reece paintings and drawings in this exhibition are generously loaned annomously.
This exhibition is organized by the University Museums with participation of Maynard, Brad and Carolyn Reece. Exhibition and the Maynard Reece painting commission to the University Museums Permanent Collection is generously provided by Fred and Ruth Kammeier; Christopher Koss; Harold and Rachel Crawford; Clifford Smith; Linda and Willis M. Mainstream Noupoort Wind Farm
Mainstream Renewable Power have just completed the construction of their latest renewable energy project in South Africa - the 80MW Noupoort Wind Farm. Construction started on Feb 2015 and by Feb 2016 they were connected to the Eskom electricity grid. This film gives a behind the scenes look at the construction on the wind farm, narrated by Pule Segale, Mainstream's Assistant site manager for Noupoort Wind Farm.

SAB World of Beer - In 1995 the SAB World of Beer was built to commemorate SA Breweries centenary. Situated in downtown Johannesburg, in the bustling precinct of Newtown, this top tourist attraction draws nearly 50 000 visitors a year and was the Winner in the Welcome Awards by SA Tourism and its partners in 2010. This venue also offers 5 star conference facilities as officially ranked by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. A visit to the SAB World of Beer is an experience with a difference. An introduction to the founder of this brewery of note is first on the agenda. Ukhamba relives the story of African beer with a sip of sorghum to satisfy the taste buds. From Africa to Europe, to look in on the father of European brewing, Josef Groll and the diligent monks who, believe it or not, took on the noble role of brewing beer. And where does beer making begin? The Greenhouse offers a glimpse of barley and hops growing. As beer is part of the heritage of most countries, it is fitting to illustrate its early role in the mining hub of South Africa, in a Heritage Hall. Experience the unique vibe of a traditional shebeen where the love of beer defied the laws of prohibition. In the Brands Hall a 180 degree screen allows you to hone in on the wonders of each brand as enjoyed by beer drinking South Africans. And for the cherry on the cake, or should that be the head on the beer, the grand finale of the tour two complimentary ice-cold beers in the Tap Room. Tours are run from Tuesdays to Saturdays at R25 per person with delicious pub lunches served between 11 and 4 pm.
