Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Karnataka
Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located in Bellary district of Karnataka. It is spread over 82.72 km2 (31.94 sq mi). The sanctuary was created exclusively for the conservation of the sloth bear. It is about 50 km from Bellary and about 15 km from the World Heritage Site Hampi.
The forest department and NGOs have also rescued many domestic bears from Daroji and surrounding areas. The age old practice of capturing a bear cub (claws are pulled out and male cubs are castrated) and domestication by Kalandars has reduced to a great extent, due to laws declaring them illegal. Rescued bears from kalandars are shifted to Agra to a rescue centre run by Wildlife SOS.
The disturbance from quarry activities and explosion in the mines are known to adversely affect wildlife population in terms of reproduction, habitat disturbance etc. The bears are threatened due to illegal mining of Iron Ore in Bellary district. Thanks to efforts of dedicated foresters many illegal mines have shut shop.
Sloth bears feed on termites, honeybee colonies and fruits. They may attack humans who encroach on their territories and human-bear conflicts are documented. Jambahava in the epic Ramayana was said to be a sloth bear. It is said that Rama’s army crossed Hampi enroute to Srilanka and there was one bear in the army called Jambhavan.
Today, Daroji Wild life sanctuary that includes the Bukkasagara range of mountains near Hampi and Anegundi is home to 120 bears. You can also find leopards, foxes, jackals, hyenas, pangolins along with several mammals and a variety of birds and reptiles.
Sloth bears are highly nocturnal animals and are fond of sweets and fruits. Therefore Jaggery, honey and seasonal fruits are put in some strategic points to attract sloth bears. This helps the tourists to see the sloth bears in the evenings, thus helping eco tourism.

Hampi is an ancient village in the south Indian state of Karnataka. It’s dotted with numerous ruined temple complexes from the Vijayanagara Empire. On the south bank of the River Tungabhadra is the 7th-century Hindu Virupaksha Temple, near the revived Hampi Bazaar. A carved stone chariot stands in front of the huge Vittala Temple site. Southeast of Hampi, Daroji Bear Sanctuary is home to the Indian sloth bear.
I started filming stuff in April 2016. Now we're travelling the world and filming it, I'd forget what I've done otherwise.
