4680 metres! 520 climbs! 1 challenge! 1 great success!
Today saw a number of our volunteers take part in a Vertical Ten Tors Challenge. Climbing the combined height of 10 Dartmoor Tors on a 9m indoor climbing wall at the Dart Rock Climbing Centre at Buckfastleigh.
The day was perfectly planned with it absolutely throwing it down with rain outside making it perfect to play inside. The day kicked off at 10am with Nik, the brains behind the idea, starting everybody off with the first 5 climbs of the 9m wall. Around 16 volunteers took part in the challenge with Nik again bringing in the final 520th climb around 3pm.
The challenge was devised to raise much needed funds for the team to help us to continue to provide the vital search and rescue service for the lost, missing and injured across Dartmoor, Devon and sometimes further afield across the southwest. Nik said. I am delighted with how successful the day has been. It looks like we will raise over £2,000 for team funds which was more than double what I hoped. This will go along way towards achieving our £15,000 operational costs each year that are raised almost entirely by fundraising
Nik went on to thank all those who have helped make the event happen. I would like to thank all the family and friends for sponsoring my colleagues and I in this undertaking, my friends/ team mates for supporting this idea and taking part, and finally a big thank you to Dart Rock Climbing Centre for their support for the event from its very start.

GWR High Speed Train on the South Devon Railway
High Speed Trains are commonly seen all over the mainline network, but rarely do they venture onto heritage steam railways. Organised by the Branch Line Society along with Great Western Railway (formerly First Great Western) a HST special from London Paddington to Buckfastleigh on the South Devon Railway using their newly liveried GWR set. This was a charity special run in aid of raising funds for the First Devon and Exeter Prostate Cancer Fund.
The special service also ran on the mothballed Heathfield line (Newton Abbot-Heathfield) but I didn't film on that line as its too heavily overgrown with trees and vegetation blocking the view of the line.
The HST ran on the South Devon Railway twice there and back so it was a great opportunity to film the train at multiple locations. Because of the number of sharp curves and the influence of the River Dart, the train had to slow for speed slacks due to the long length of the train and the Mark III coaching stock coping with the tense adhesion.
Locations filmed on:
Bishops Bridge loop (where the old and the modern GWR meet)
Riverford Bridge
West Staverton
Dartington
The power cars are 43187 (facing Buckfastleigh) and 43188 (facing Totnes)

The South Devon Railway Trust is a charitable organisation that operates a heritage railway from Totnes to Buckfastleigh in Devon, alongside the River Dart. The heritage railway itself is known as the South Devon Railway, named in honour of the South Devon Railway Company that originally built much of Devon's railway infrastructure, although its previous name of the Dart Valley Railway is sometimes still heard.
The Railway's headquarters and museum are located in the Buckfastleigh railway station.

A visit to the South Devon Railway on Friday 23rd October 2009, with GWR 13XX 0-6-0PT No 1369. The journey up the valley from Totnes to Buckfastleigh is shown in the first video, with the high levels of leaf-fall causing adhesion problems for the 'pannier' on the climb from Staverton to Buckfastleigh.
