Destination Bideford
Charles Kingsley's description of Bideford as The Little White Town, which slopes upward from its broad river tide paints a picturesque one hundred & fifty year old image of the town that has not changed much to the present day.
In fact, if you approach this historic town from East-the-Water you can easily imagine you are being transported back to a time when life wasn't so hectic, and when Bideford was still one of the largest ports and market towns in the country.
This is because many of the houses are still painted white with small cobbled paths and walkways that weave their way in between the houses as they did in Charles Kingsley's day. Bideford's ancient and iconic long bridge still stands proud, spanning the river Torridge and providing a link between the two sides of the town as it has for hundreds of years.
However, Bideford is now definitely in the 21st century with its new Torridge Bridge, its recently enhanced quay area, excellent shopping, a variety of restaurants, and the lively pubs & themed bars where you can eat in or go alfresco.
Then there are the theme parks like The Big Sheep & Atlantis Adventure, The Milky Way and so much more, which adds up to make Bideford a great place to stay in or visit.
So, whether you're travelling on your own, as a couple, in a group or a family, Bideford has a wealth of exciting (or sedate) options that will cater for everyone's pace of life.
You could enjoy a stroll around the town exploring the narrow streets on Bideford's heritage trail and visit the brightly coloured shops along the way, selling local fudge, arts & crafts and fresh local produce.
Or for those of you who enjoy some present day retail therapy, you could pay a visit to the Atlantic Village Shopping Outlet where you can purchase the latest designer clothing, sportswear, household goods and much more.
If you are feeling energetic, you could take a cycle ride or a walk on the Tarka Trail and stop for a spot of lunch and a beer at one of the many traditional pubs along the route, often supplied by acclaimed micro-breweries in the local area.
Alternatively, you could visit the Burton Art Gallery with its Tourist Information Centre, view the various artists' work on display, or peruse the free museum. Then walk around Victoria Park with its excellent colourful floral displays. You could also check out the Kathleen & May, an historic schooner that's harboured at the Brunswick Wharf, just across from Bideford quay. Take a trip to Lundy Island on the MS Oldenburg, the ferry that regularly makes the 14-mile journey to the island and back. This will enable you to see Bideford, Lundy and the surrounding area from a very different perspective.
Or, you could take a swim, surf or kite buggy at Westward Ho!, visit the amusement arcades, or walk along an incredible three-mile stretch of beach which holds blue flag status that's only a five-minute drive from Bideford Town centre.
So, don't take our word for it, make sure you take time to visit this picturesque and unique destination in North Devon, and we'll make sure we give you a warm Bidefordian welcome!

Another Bad Weather Xmas Solo Wild Camp - Naturehike Cloud Up 2
It's Christmas, and to show his appreciation for your support through the past year, Trev has taken to Dartmoor for another spot of wet and windy wild camping in the Naturehike Cloud Up 2.
Its been a while since Trev last got out for a wild camp, and with all the bad weather we've had recently, perhaps he should have just stayed at home with the family, but no he's out for some solo wild camping in the trusted Naturehike, which he still claims to be one of the best budget tents he's tried so far.

South Lakes Safari Zoo Licence Application Rejection & Formal Closure Notice
The controversial South Lakes Safari Zoo ran by David Gill where 486 animals had died in a period of less than 4 years in addition to a worker being mauled to death by a tiger has been issued with a formal closure notice by Barrow Borough Council. The closure notice was issued today after David Gill's application for a license to run the zoo in Cumbria was unanimously rejected by the council's licensing and regulatory subcommittee. According to the council's report, the zoo should close to the public upon refusal of the licence. However, the closure will be delayed if an appeal is made, which Mr Gill has 28 days to lodge. This decision is in light of a shocking report detailing conditions at the park being some of the worst seen in more than 60 years listing many failures under David Gill's management. The Born Free Foundation addressed the hearing, stating the problems at the zoo are 'fundamental' and cannot be fixed with a new licence, which was followed by a list of animal deaths being read out to the deciding councilors.
David Gill has now handed management over to the Cumbria Zoo Company Ltd and claims he plans to sell the zoo to them. Here comes the suspicious part - the Cumbria Zoo Company Ltd was set up in January by former South Lakes Safari Zoo chief executive Karen Brewer. Brewer has submitted a new application for a Zoo license to Barrow Council which will be assessed later this spring. Gill is claimed to have no involvement in the very recently created Cumbria Zoo Company Ltd however, as the owner of the site, he is the company's landlord and also owns some of the animals that are leased to the newly created entity. According to the North West Evening Mail inspectors noted 'genuine efforts' have been made to improve standards on site since the company was formed however nothing specific has yet been mentioned. Zoo inspectors appointed by the secretary of state believe David Gill should face prosecution under the Animal Welfare Act, however the decision on whether to take such a case forward rests solely with Barrow Borough Council.
We hope that under the pressure of national scrutiny the new administration (if it really can be called such) manages the welfare of the animals held captive at the zoo much better and also that David Gill will be kept as far away from the zoo as possible, however this may be unlikely. Rest assured we will be keeping a close eye on the management of this zoo and its new application over the coming months and provide updates accordingly.
