The Dartmoor Railway runs from Okehampton to Meldon Viaduct in Devon. The Polar Express runs at Christmas. The Sunday Rover runs from Okehampton to Exeter St Davids in the Summer months.

The Dartmoor Railway runs trains from Meldon Viaduct to Okehampton Station and sometimes to Sampford Courtenay Station. At Okehampton trains co-ordinate with the Summer Sunday Rover trains from Exeter St James Park.

Okehampton is a town and civil parish in West Devon in the English county of Devon. Okehampton is situated at the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle
Okehampton was the caput of a large feudal barony, which at the time of the Domesday Book was held by Baldwin FitzGilbert. After his death in 1090 the tenure of the barony is obscure for the next twenty years after which it was held by the heiress Maud d'Avranches until her death in 1173, which passed to her daughter, Hawise de Curci (died 1219), who married Reginald de Courtenay.
Okehampton's location at the edge of the moor means that it has always been a route centre. After years of uncertainty, the A30 trunk road was finally re-routed in 1988 to bypass the town, which had previously acted as a holiday traffic bottleneck at summer weekends. Okehampton railway station is on the former northerly rail route from Exeter to Plymouth via Tavistock. The line from Exeter remains open for freight traffic to and from Meldon Quarry, two miles (3 km) west of Okehampton. In summer, and at weekends throughout the year, the Dartmoor Railway operates a heritage railway service between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry.
Okehampton is surrounded by many smaller villages and towns including the hamlet of Stockley. Notable examples are the villages of South Zeal with its ancient burgage plots, granite thatched cottages and Dartmoor Folk Festival; Belstone, noted for its location on the very outskirts of Dartmoor and links to Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery

Dartmoor Railway, July 2019
With 3 days off, I decided to plan a camping trip to the edge of Dartmoor, and en route I stop off at the Dartmoor Railway. Running from Okehampton Station, to Meldon Quarry, a distance of around 2 miles along the former London & South Western Railway route between Exeter and Plymouth. We board the service at Okehampton, powered by Class 08 D4167, in the brake van, and travel the line to Meldon Quarry, a short walk from the station we find ourselves on Meldon Viaduct, offering spectacular views as the Granite Way Cycle Trail heads away from us towards Lydford. Back on the station we travel back to Okehampton, bringing a close to my visit.
Great Western Railway offer a 'Sunday Rover' service between Exeter and Okehampton on Summer Sundays, making it even easier to visit the line, and this is something I'd like to do in the future.

I WAS SITTING IN MY CAR WINDOW OPEN WHILE ADMIRING THE BEAUTY OF DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK. IT'S A BIT GLOOMY, DRIZZLING DAY BUT THE SCENIC IS SO RELAXING. HEARD THE COCKERELS SINGING PLUS ROARING OF THE WILD ANIMALS OUT THERE.

It's Sunday 25th June, and we're back down in Devon to pick up two awkward stations - Samford Courtenay and Okehampton.
The line is only served by GWR/National Rail trains on summer Sundays ONLY, and at Okehampton, the Dartmoor Railway then runs services to nearby Melton Quarry/Viaduct. They sometimes run trains back to Sampford Courtenay too.

Okehampton was opened by the L&SWR in 1871 and closed in 1972. In 1997 it was re-opened by the Dartmoor Railway in 1997 and Sunday Dartmoor Rover services run from May to September. A heritage railway service runs from here to Meldon Viaduct Station and at Christmas 'Polar Express' trains run.

Exeter St Davids to Okehampton Dartmoor Railway Class 153 369
The journey aboard the Summer Sunday Special DMU service from Exeter St Davids to Okehampton station from aboard 153 369. The section of line beyond Cowley Bridge junction formed the former main line of the LSWR latterly Southern Railway network west of Exeter, known as the 'Withered Arm of their system. Beyond Okehampton connections to Bude, Padstow and Plymouth were available until the Beeching cuts of the 1960's.

Okehampton is a town and civil parish in West Devon in the English county of Devon. It is situated at the northern edge of Dartmoor, and had a population of 5,922 at the 2011 census. Two electoral wards are based in the town (east and west). Their joint population at the same census is 7,500. Okehampton is 21 miles (33 km) west of Exeter, it's nearest city as well as being 26 miles (42 km) north of Plymouth and 24 miles (38 km) south of Barnstaple.
Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. It was recorded as a place for slaves to be freed at cross roads.
Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle, which was established by the Norman Sheriff of Devon, Baldwin FitzGilbert (d.1090).

The Museum Of Dartmoor Life Okehampton Devon.
The Museum of Dartmoor Life (MDL) is a local museum in Okehampton, Devon, southwest England. It covers life in the Dartmoor area.
The museum opened in 1981. It is housed on three floors in an early 19th-century mill and there is a waterwheel at the museum. The collections concentrate on the social history of Dartmoor and Okehampton from prehistoric times to the present. The museum is run as an independent charitable trust with a board of trustees.

Sampford Courtenay Station, Dartmoor Railway, Devon
Sampford Courtenay Station on the Dartmoor Railway to Okehampton was closed in 1972 but re-opened in 2002 for limited Sunday Dartmoor Rover and Christmas services. It has been known as Okehampton Road and Belstone Corner in the past.
Meldon Quarry, Dartmoor Railway, Devon
Meldon Granite Quarry near Okehampton in Devon was once owned by the Southern Railway and British Railways before passing into private hands. It supplied railway ballast to the rail network but is at present mothballed.

Saturday, February 4th 2017 - At the Dartmoor Railway special trains were running between Meldon, Okehampton and Coleford Junction using classic traction. On this day the train has Class 45 Sherwood Forrester at the western (Meldon) end of the train and Class 33, 33035, at the eastern (Coleford Junction) end. This video shows scenes at Okehampton Station (start - 02.28 & 04.40 - end) and Meldon Quarry (02.28 - 04.40).
