The Darwin CBD Flythrough Concept outlines a draft vision for creating a vibrant Darwin city centre, showcasing the possibilities for:
• Myilly Point
• State Square
• The Mall
• Smith Street
• Cooling and greening
• Heat mitigation and urban design
It sets out an overall concept for how Darwin’s city centre could be transformed into a cooler, more pedestrian-friendly place, creating a vibrant economic hub, linking the Waterfront to Cullen Bay through the heart of the city and reflecting the rich heritage and stories of the people of Darwin.
The Flythrough concept provides the basis for community and stakeholder engagement as we work towards a City Deal that will help create a Darwin CBD for the future that meets the needs of residents, businesses and visitors and is the genuine Capital of Northern Australia.

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia, situated on the Timor Sea. It is the largest city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, with a population of 148,564. It is the smallest, wettest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre.
Darwin's proximity to South East Asia makes it a link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin, extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking the harbour. Its suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. Past Berrimah, the Stuart Highway goes on to Darwin's satellite city Palmerston and its suburbs.
The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, experiences a tropical climate with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as the build up leading up to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December and brings with it heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour.
The greater Darwin area is the ancestral home of the Larrakia people. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin harbour during its survey of the area. John Clements Wickham named the region Port Darwin in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage which ended in October 1836. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but it was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following the devastation caused by the 1897 cyclone, the 1937 cyclone, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974

We experience the best of Operation Pitch Black and get out onto the runway to visit the jets and planes that are on display. Operation Pitch Black is a biennial three week multi-national large force employment exercise conducted from RAAF Base #Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal. After seeing planes taking off each night (#dad couldn't get enough of watching them take off) it was awesome to be able to see them up close (even getting inside some of the bigger ones). We also stumbled across some of the NAVY boats in Darwin Waterfront for Exercise Kakadu and was fortunate enough to be allowed on them. Airnorth Embraer Brasilia ✈️ Darwin to Alice Springs via Katherine and Tennant Creek TL250
This Airnorth flight is known as The Centre Run . It is a vital link for the small communities of Katherine and Tennant Creek, connecting them with the larger towns of Darwin and Alice Springs. It's a government subsidised route run with the Embraer EMB120 Brasilia. A classic turboprop 30 seat airliner.
I took this flight in December 2018 in the roaring heat of the outback summer! There are 3 sectors, Darwin to Katherine at 40 min, Katherine to Tennant Creek at 1 hr 20, Tennant Creek to Alice Springs at 1 hr. The flight leaves Darwin at 7am around 3 times a week arriving into Alice Springs just before noon. The aircraft then turns around and flies the same route back to Darwin.
Airnorth provide full service with food and drink available free of charge on all 3 sectors ! Great service and a wonderful experience.

On this flight I fly from Darwin to Broome - meanwhile the Vatpac Facebook page blew up into people complaining that there aren't enough real world routes in WA, and that everyone complains about only ever having events scheduled between Sydney and Melbourne, and complains about the complainers complaining about complaints where complainers complain about complainers complaining about complaints.

Original archival synopsis: The Japanese bombed Darwin many times during World War II because it was strategically important target number one in their attack on the Australian mainland. Before the war, Darwin was little known except to the crews of pearling luggers and cattlemen. During the war it become an important air base which contributed much to the success of General MacArthur's island-hopping campaign against Japan. Today Darwin is an aerial port of call for all planes travelling either from Europe or the Far East to Australia. The Darwin touchdown is, in fact, for many travellers the first sight of the Australian continent. The film shows Darwin as it is today (1949), much ravaged by Japanese attack during World War II, but already showing signs of building activity and general recovery. The film indicates the general life of the town and also explains the plan which will make Darwin a model city of which Australia will be very proud.

Loaded rail train 4N41, is seen on its way to Roe Creek from Whyalla. The rail was bound for the construction of the Alice Springs to Darwin rail line. The lead two locomotives were bound to work construction trains on the line. Locos were 3103, 3104, CLP10, CLF5. 3 April 2002.
