DARWIN AVIATION MUSEUM IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY AUSTRALIA
Aj visits the Aviation Museum is a must on the ‘Things To Do List’ in Darwin
Once you enter the museum you are surrounded by some of the most renowned aircrafts in aviation history. These include the General Dynamics F-111C, Bell Cobra S Model, Dassault Mirage IIIO and the Submariner Spitfire MK VIII. The standout though is the enormous B-52 Stratospheres. I knew these craft were big, but seeing one in person gave me a whole new perspective. It’s the only B-52 on display in the Southern Hemisphere.
There are interesting stories about Darwin’s aviation history and wartime experience with 19 aircraft including a B52 bomber, 21 engines and a rare amateur footage of the first air-raid in Darwin on display.
On 19 February 1942, 188 Japanese planes bombed Darwin in two air raids. One Japanese plane crash-landed on Melville Island to Darwin’s north, and its pilot was captured by a local Aboriginal man. You can see the plane at the museum.

Darwin Aviation Museum
The Aviation Historical Society of the Northern Territory was established in 1976 by a small group of enthusiasts who sought to preserve aviation relics salvaged after the destruction of Cyclone Tracy. Negotiations were carried out for some time with the United States Air Force and the Northern Territory Government to obtain a Boeing B-52 bomber and to build a museum to house and display it. This was achieved in June 1990 when the new Darwin Aviation Museum was officially opened with a fully refurbished B-52G bomber on permanent loan from the USAF

PART I OF 2 PARTS AVIATOR'S PARK FANNIE BAY DARWIN NT
HISTORY CARAVAN TRIP 2007 Fannie Bay is a middle/inner suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Situated in the suburb is the Fannie Bay Gaol museum, Fannie Bay Race Track and a monument to Ross Smith, captain of the Vickers Vimy that, in December 1919, was the first aircraft to fly from England to Australia in less than 30 days. Adjoining the suburb is the East Point Reserve, containing Lake Alexander, a Military Museum and gun emplacements from the Second World War. Fannie Bay is thought to be named after Fanny Carandini, a popular opera singer in the late 1800s. Fannie Bay / East Point is an established residential area, with a beach and large recreation reserve. Fannie Bay / East Point is bounded by the Timor Sea foreshore in the north, Douglas, Macdonald and Charlotte Streets in the east, Conacher Street in the south and the Fannie Bay foreshore in the west. Development of the area dates originally from the late 1800s, but primarily from the 1960s. The Fannie Bay Gaol was in use from 1883 to 1979. During World War II the area was used for gun turrets and as an anchor for the submarine net. In the immediate postwar years the current recreation reserve was used as a golf course. Major features of the area include Fannie Bay Racecourse, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lake Alexander, Vestys Lake and East Point Recreation Reserve. Fannie Bay / East Point has experienced a decrease in population between 1996 and 2001, the result of relative stability in the number of dwellings and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

AA On 19 February 1942, during the Pacific War, 242 Japanese warplanes attacked Darwin in two waves. It was the same fleet that had bombed Pearl Harbor, though a considerably larger number of bombs were dropped on Darwin, than on Pearl Harbor. This aspect of Darwin's history is often overlooked when discussing World War II. The attack killed at least 243 people and caused immense damage to the town. These were by far the most serious attacks on Australia in time of war, in terms of fatalities and damage. They were the first of many raids on Darwin. WIKIPEDIA
