Mahanavami Dibba, Hampi
Dasara Dibba or the Mahanavami Dibba is a beautiful stone platform located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It was built during the Vijayanagara period by King Krishnadevaraya to commemorate his victory over Udaygiri. It was here where the King of Vijayanagar used to celebrate the festival of Dussehra.
Mahanavami Dibba and Queen's Bath in Hampi
The Mahanavami Dibba is one of the most impressive structures in Hampi. It is a beautiful stone platform that is located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It was built during the period of the Vijayanagara Empire in the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture.
It is also known as the Dasara Dibba . The imposing platform attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year.
The Mahanavami Dibba attracts attention as one of the tallest structures in the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. The stone platform has a height of about 12 metres. It is one of the first things that visitors notice as soon as they enter the Royal Enclosure.
The Queen’s Bath in Hampi is a colossal bath that exemplifies the architectural excellence prevalent during the days of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is located close to the entrance of the Royal Enclosure in Hampi.
Constructed during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Queen’s Bath impresses visitors even today, more than 500 years after it was built.
The Queen’s Bath is believed to be constructed by Achyuta Raya for the women of the royal family of Vijayanagara. Though named as the Queen’s Bath, it was in all probability used as the private bathing chamber of the king and his queens. It is also believed that the lavish bath was a royal pleasure complex. This belief is due to the location of the bath, which is outside the Royal Enclosure.

Hampi - Visit to Achyutaraya Temple & Mahanavami Dibba
Achyutaraya Temple
---------------------------------
Consecrated in AD 1534, this temple is an example of Vijayanagara style temple architecture in its most advanced form than any other temples in Hampi. This was one of the last grandiose temple projects executed in the capital, before the fall of the empire.
The temple dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Vishnu , was constructed by a high officer in Achyuta Raya's court and hence the name.
The temple complex and the ruined market street in front of it sit in a semi secluded valley created by two hills - the Gandhamadana & Matanga hills . Partially due to its off location from the main tourist track and the hidden nature of the temple's location makes it less crowded, welcome news for the ones like a quiet tour.

Mahanavami Dibba
-------------------------------
This is the tallest structure in this area and hence the first thing you would notice as you enter the Royal Enclosure. From a distance this looks like an ordinary elevated square stage. As you go close, the details emerge. The whole structure is made as a giant square structure in three layers.
King Krishnadevaraya constructed this in commemoration on the victory over Udaygiri (now in Orissa). Archeologists believe that this platform had undergone systematic enhancements by successive kings came into power. The greenish schist stone additions in the front portions stands out from the rest and vouch this theory.

Hampi Sightseeing 2
The Lotus Mahal or Kamala Mahal also known as Chitrangini Mahal is a unique structure located among the rich architectural ruins of Hampi. This majestic structure is a part of the Zenana Enclosure, a secluded area reserved for the royal ladies of the Vijayanagara Empire.
It is one of the few amazing structures in Hampi that were left undamaged during the siege of the city.
As the name indicates, the beautiful domed structure has been designed in the shape of a lotus bud.
The archways of the structure resemble petals of a lotus and provide the whole structure the shape of a half-open lotus bud. The central dome is carved in the shape of a lotus bud. The Lotus Mahal is designed in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The base of the superstructure has the traditional Vijayanagara architectural pattern. The Lotus Mahal is a two storied symmetric structure that is surrounded by a rectangular fortifying wall. Initially the fortification had 4 watch towers , but only three can be seen today. These watch towers were once used for keeping guard against intruders trying to enter the Zenana Enclosure. An interesting feature about the Lotus Mahal is that it was an air-cooled structure. During the hot summer months, the temperature inside the structure was maintained and kept low. The proof of this fact is provided by the pipeline work that runs above and between the arches of the structure and the sides of the roof.
Dasara Dibba is one of the most impressive structures in Hampi. It is a beautiful stone platform that is located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It was built during the period of the Vijayanagara Empire in the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture.
The Dasara Dibba was constructed by King Krishnadevaraya to commemorate his victory over Udaygiri (situated in present-day Orissa).
Dasara Dibba is an impressively carved platform that was used by the kings of the Vijayanagara Empire. The grand platform was used as a stage by the kings to watch the celebration of the nine-day long splendid Mahanavami festival, also known as Dasara festival. Due to this reason the platform came to be known as Mahanavami Dibba.
The Elephant Stable in Hampi is an impressive structure that was used to provide shelter for the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire. The elephant stable is located in the area that lies just outside the Zenana Enclosure.
The elephant stable was constructed in the 15th century, during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. The elephant stable in Hampi is one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The elephant stable is a long building with a rectangular shape. The building has a row of eleven huge domed chambers. The central dome is the largest and most decorated among the 11 domes of the building. The design of the central dome represents the architectural style found in the temples of Hampi.
Hazara Rama Temple in Hampi is an important shrine in Hampi. This small but beautiful temple is located at the center of the royal area. It was once the private temple of the kings and the royal family of Vijayanagara. The temple is famous for the lovely bas relics and panels depicting the story of the epic Ramayana.
Hazara Rama Temple was built in the early part of the 15th century by the then king of Vijayanagara, Devaraya II. It was originally built as a simple structure. It consisted of only a sanctum, a pillared hall and an ardha mantapa. Later the temple structure was renovated to add an open porch and beautiful pillars.
There are two huge gateways that give access to the temple compound. The interior of the temple has ornately sculpted columns. An empty pedestal with three holes signifies that the temple once had idols of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.
The only addition is that there are depictions of Lord Vishnu also on the walls of this shrine. The temple stands as an example of the excellent craftsmanship of Vijayanagara’s sculptors.

Hampi Utsav 2020 | Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga & Queen's Bath | Mahanavami Dibba
In this 4th episode of Hampi video series, we are exploring Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga, Queen's Bath, Stepped Tank and Mahanavami Dibba of Hampi.
#Hampi #KarnatakaTourism #StepsTogether
Lakshmi Narasimha (Ugra Narasimha) Idol
We left Krishna temple complex at 4.10 PM and headed towards the popular Lakshmi Narasimha statue. This huge idol is easily noticeable from the main road itself. The iconic monolithic idol is the largest statue in Hampi. The idol is damaged majorly so much so that people often call it as Ugra Narasimha even though it is a representation of Lakshmi Narasimha.
The original idol had the image of Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of Narasimha. But, the idol of Lakshmi had been completely demolished during the fall of Vijayanagara dynasty and thus making the impression of Ugra Narasimha. It is said that even now we can see the hand of Goddess Lakshmi idol resting on the back of Narasimha. But, you cannot see this because entry inside the enclosure is restricted.
Badavi Linga
Next to Lakshmi Narasimha idol, you can find the largest Shiva Linga of Hampi known as Badavi Linga. It is also housed in a small chamber with only one opening at the front. The Shiva Linga is very big and lower portion of the linga is always submerged in water. It is believed to be constructed by a poor woman hence the name Badavi Linga (Badavi means poor lady in Kannada). We left Badavi Linga at 4.30 PM and headed towards Royal Enclosure.
Queen’s Bath:
After visiting Badavi Linga idol, we headed towards Royal Enclosure. On the Royal Enclosure side of Hampi, the first attraction you will get to see is Queen’s bath.
This is the place where queen used to take bath. However, many theories decline this and suggest that it is a place used for recreational activities. Whatever be the case, it is a beautiful structure one cannot miss. It has an empty pond in the middle and a beautiful open pavilion with small windows. There are steps on one side through which one can get to the pond area. We spent time there till 5 PM and headed further towards the Royal Enclosure area.
Mahanavami Dibba:
The first structure you get to see in the Royal Enclosure is the huge Mahanavami Dibba. Mahanavami Dibba is a large stone platform built by Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara dynasty to celebrate his victory over Udayagiri. The structure is more beautiful than you see in the photos. When I Had a look at the photo of this place before visiting, I did not find it interesting at all, but the reality is quite different.
You need to climb about 25-30 big steps to reach the top. The side walls of the platform have a well-carved array of sculptures. At the top, there is nothing except a big plain stage. This is from where kings used to watch the march past of the army, cultural celebrations during Dusshera, sword fights, and other cultural activities. Now, if you go on top and have a look, you can find the ruins of the Royal Enclosure. Though it is sad to see the renowned town in such condition, never miss to sit there for some time and imagine the glorious past of the place. At the backside of the platform also, there are steps to climb. You can climb up from the front steps and climb down using the rear steps to cover the structure completely.
Stepped Tank:
From Mahanavami Dibba, we walked towards the stepped tank which is in the same enclosure. This stepped tank was excavated in the 1980s and is one of the beautiful water tanks. Well maintained by the ASI, the tank has steps in the formation of pyramids next to each other making it look elegant. The water of this tank was believed to be used for religious purposes. Next to this tank is the public tank. This is a bigger and normal looking tank. There is no water in the public tank currently. Apart from these, there is a king’s audience hall in this royal enclosure.

At a distance of 1 km from Kamalapur Bus Stand and 3 km from Hampi Bus Stand, Queen's Bath is located close at the entrance of the Royal Enclosure in Hampi.
The Queen's Bath is believed to be constructed by Achyuta Raya for the women of the royal family of Vijayanagara. Built in Indo-Islamic style, the Queen's Bath is an elaborate structure with a simple exterior and an ornate interior. It is a rectangular building and is surrounded by ornate balconies, each having a set of three windows. Each arched bay surrounding the bath is decorated with intricate carved stucco ornamentation on the ceilings and the vaults placed above the arched bays. The depth of the pool is 6 feet and has stone steps leading to the bottom of the tank.
This 30 square meter structure is surrounded by a moat on all sides and a bridge like structure is made to reach the pool. Probably this was designed to prevent people from entering the area when the royals were bathing.
At a distance of 3.5 km from Hampi Bus Stand, Mahanavami Dibba or The House of Victory is a beautiful stone platform situated inside the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It is also known as Dasara Dibba and is one of the most impressive structures in Hampi.
It was built by King Krishnadevaraya in 1513 AD after his conquest over the kingdom of Udayagiri, present day Orissa. The grand platform was used as a stage by the kings to watch the army march-past, the war games and the royal procession that were held during the Mahanavami festival, also known as the Dasara festival, hence the name Mahanavami Dibba.
Dasara Dibba represents the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture. The stone platform is about 12 m height. The huge structure is a square platform with three layers that are richly decorated with beautiful carvings. The carvings at the lower portion of the Dasara Dibba are the most fascinating. The sides of the platform are also engraved with elaborate carvings of merchants, .....

Stone Chariot || Hampi || Karnataka || India || Backpackers Ride
The "Stone Chariot", as it is often referred is the flagship tourist attraction of Hampi. This is not a chariot ,as the
name suggests, rather a shrine built like a chariot. This is located inside the Vittala Temple campus. You would be
visiting the Stone Chariot as part of your Vittala Temple tour.
Every tourist place has that one spot which earns it galore and admiration for Hampi, the small, dainty
temple village set in Karnataka, it’s the iconic stone chariot. It’s the leading man in the army of exquisite
beautiful sights that Hampi has to offer and depicts Karnataka tourism an icon itself.
The chariot was built by King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 16 th century, who
got fascinated with the Konark Sun temple chariot while fighting a battle in Odissa. The chariot is meant
to represent the beauty and artistic perfection of the Empire. An interesting folklore emanates from the
Hampichariotas villagers believe that the world would come to a halt when the chariot moves from its
place. It has come to have a sacrosanct presence and is internationally recognized as a world heritage
site even by the UNESCO.
Inspired by the Dravidian style ofarchitecture, the chariot is a colossal structure which shows the skill of
the earlier craftsmen and architects. The beauty of the chariot lies in the fact that it looks like one solid
structure but in fact, has been built by slabs of granite whose linkages have been cleverly hidden with
artistic designs.
