One of the great saints who visited Kashmir in 14th century was Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani from the province of Geelan in Iran. In the locality of Khanyar in downtown Srinagar, a spacious complex by the name of the shrine of Pir Dastgeer was established in his name and it became a sanctified place for the visitations of the saint.
This architectural wonder was a symbol of Kashmir’s collective faith, spirituality and cultural heritage. The shrine, built around 200 years ago in Kashmir, was a mark of respect toward Abdul Qadir Jeelani, a saint who hailed from Gilan province of Persia. Dastgeer Sahib is buried inside a shrine in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Srinagar 200 year old Sufi shrine catches fire India News IBNLive
Srinagar, June 25 (ANI): A Massive fire broke out at 200-year-old historical Peer Dastgeer Sahib shrine in Srinagar in early morning hours of Monday. Over a dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot to counter the blaze. While no casualties were reported, evacuations at the site of the fire continue, as some people were feared to be trapped inside the shrine. The revered shrine was extensively damaged. However, reason behind the fire has yet not ascertained but investigations are underway. Cutting across the religious barriers, a large number of devotees visit the shrine to offer prayers. Muslims call the saint Ghaus-e-Azam while Hindus revere the saint as Kahnoow
Dastageer Sahib (RA) Four Years on, Shrine still incomplete
While the re-construction work on Dastageer Sahib (RA) Shrine at Khanyar has been halted from last one year, the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Wakf board blamed the Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC) for escalating the construction cost, which according to them has ‘unduly’ delayed the completion of the project.
The revered shrine of Dastgeer Sahib (RA) was gutted in a devastating fire on June 26, 2012 after which the government had ordered for its speedy reconstruction. However three years later, the project has not been completed, leaving devotees and local populace miffed over this lackadaisical approach.
Vice Chairman, WAKF board, Peer Hussain told The Kashmir Monitor that the JKPCC, despite having received the funds from the government, has escalated the construction cost at the last moment.
“The government earlier had estimated Rs.6 Cr as the cost for the reconstruction of the shrine which was agreed upon by the JKPCC-its nodal agency. But they (JKPCC) unnecessarily delayed the construction work and have now escalated the construction cost upto Rs.9Cr. The government has already allotted the estimated funds,” he said.
“90 percent of the construction work has been completed but now the JKPCC is not working on it. The Urs of Dastageer is also nearing and definitely the delay will create problems to some extent,” Peer added.
Presently the interiors including the praying space of the shrine has not been reconstructed completely. The windows of the shrine are without glasses and the washrooms are also in pathetic condition.
The inordinate delay in the reconstruction of shrine is miffing the devotees who slammed the government for failing to ensure its speedy completion.
“It has been three years and yet the government is failing to complete its construction. Dastageer Sahab (RA) shrine is the most revered shrine. Now the Urs will be observed and the shabby condition will miff the people,” said Shabir Hakak a devotee from Srinagar.
When contacted the Managing Director JKPCC, Dilip Thusoo said that they are working on the interior details of the shrine.
“It had some issues regarding the interiors and we are working on it. We assure you that the reconstruction work will be completed soon,” he said.
