Eagle Square - Dataran Lang , Langkawi
Dataran Lang is one of Langkawi’s best known manmade attractions, a large sculpture of an eagle poised to take flight.
A sight that greets visitors to the island via ferry, the 12 metre-tall statue is one of the island’s most instantly recognizable monuments. Located at the southeast corner of Pulau Langkawi, besides offering beautiful views of Kuah Bay, Dataran Lang has beautiful miniature fountains, terraces and bridges, making it the ideal place for those postcard-perfect holiday photos.
The square is a good place to watch ferries ply across the harbour but plan a trip here early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is at its least intense.

Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah), is a district and an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On 15 July 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his golden jubilee celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Langkawi Island (Palau Langkawi), with a population of some 64,792; the only other inhabited island being nearby Tuba Island. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island.
The name Langkawi is thought to have existed by the early 15th century, although in the 16th century the island of Langkawi was also marked on maps variously as Langa, Langka, Lansura, and Langapura.
There are many suggestions for the origin of the name of Langkawi. According to one interpretation, Langkawi means island of the reddish-brown eagle, a Brahminy kite in colloquial Malay. The Malay word for eagle is helang (shortened to lang), and kawi is a red stone used as a chalk to mark goods.[5] This interpretation was used to create the landmark sculpture of an eagle as the symbol of Langkawi at Dataran Helang (Eagle Square) in Kuah.

LANGKAWI Malaysia - Bahagian 1 | Dari Mata Langit [ Episod 8 ]
Saksikan DARI MATA LANGIT (episod Langkawi) yang memaparkan keistimewaan dan tempat-tempat menarik di pulau lagenda Mahsuri itu.
Nama Langkawi ialah kombinasi antara Lang dan Kawi. Lang diambil daripada perkataan bahasa Melayu iaitu helang. Ini dapat dibuktikan dengan keberadaan burung-burung helang yang terbang bertebaran di kebanyakan tempat di Langkawi antaranya kawasan Kilim Geopark, Pulau Singa Besar dan seluruh kepulauan Langkawi. Langkawi juga menjadi habitat kepada sejumlah burung helang merah kawi. Kawi beerti merah hati, ini kerana helang tersebut mempunyai bulu merah hati dan berkepala putih.
Kawi juga beerti tulisan Kawi, tulisan yang digunakan oleh masyarakat tradisi Hindu Jawa. Selain itu, Kawi juga merujuk kepada sejenis batu iaitu Batu Kawi atau batu kapur. Lambakan Batu Kawi terdapat di Langkawi. Patung Helang yang terdapat di Dataran Helang jika diteliti, juga dilihat sedang berdiri diatas Batu Kawi.
Kawi dalam bahasa Sanskrit ialah guli, yang mana ia ditemui sebagai pertemuan bahagian Malaysia. Apabila kedua-dua perkataan digabungkan, ia membentuk perkataan Helangkawi yang kemudian menjadi Langkawi.
Dipercayai bahawa Langkawi mendapat namanya daripada perkataan Langkasuka. Sumber-sumber sejarah tidak banyak tetapi mengikut satu rekod sejarah Dinasti Liang China (500 M) merujuk kerajaan itu sebagai Langgasu yang diasaskan pada kurun pertama Masihi. Rujukan lain dijumpai di dalam buku oleh Tun Mohamed Zahir yang bertajuk The Legends of Langkawi yang mana nama tersebut menggabungkan dua perkataan Sanskritiaitu Langka (keindahan) dan Wi (tidak terkira).
