第七集 Datun Nature Park / 賞玩大屯自然公園 | Taipei City, Taiwan VLOG
Farah and Kyle, along with friends Justin and Bernard explore Datun Nature Park in Yangming Mountain area, early in the morning. The views are still beautiful and the hike isn't as intense as Yangming Mountain. We suggest this for anyone that doesn't want to be too active, but wants a good view. After they grab some dumplings at a chain restaurant.

Witches Hot Springs in XinBeitou, Taiwan
Xinbeitou, Hot Spring
Xinbeitou, The Hot Spring Shangri-la
After a longtime of sleeping and mutation, Xinbeitou Hot Spring, the most well-known hot-spring resort for the last one-hundred years has experienced a rebirth. Like phoenix from the flames it soars. Standing at the crossing point of humanity and history, Xinbeitou Hot Spring has intoned again on ancient past, a beautiful past, and echoes with the nature's life and beauty.
Beitou used to be a place in northern Taiwan where the Ketagalan tribe, the Pingpu flatland tribe, had lived. By the fear of the cloudy and mistrial scene of the Datun Mountain, the local aborigines named the place as Beitou which meant witches or the residence of witches. In 1894, mid-nineteenth century, a German named Ouely was the first person documented Beitou and the establishment of hot spring club which draw water from the hot sulfur springs. This is thought to be the beginning of the development of Beitou's sulfur spring.
Origin and Glorious time of Beitou Hot Spring
In 1986, Taiwan's first hot-spring hotel, the TienGo House, was established by Hiroda Gengo, a Japanese businessman, and then promoted to Japan. Thus, more and more hot spring hotels were set up in Beitou, and also more and more Japanese started visiting Taiwan for relaxation. In 1913, the grand two-story Public Bathing Pool of Beitou Hot Spring was founded.
In general, during the period from 1896 to 1945 when Taiwan had been colonized by Japan, and even at the end of the World War II, Beitou, influenced by the political environment at that time, had become famous spot for international resort.

{Hiking} Taiwan Travel -- Mt. Qixing [YANGMINGSHAN] (陽明山七星山)
Mt. Qixing is Taipei's highest mountain. Hiking it is rather easy with broad trails and many signs in Chinese and English.
We started from Lengshuikeng but didn't do the usual route via the East Peak but the one further south which joins the Miaopu Trail.
Before you go there, you want to check the mountains from below (Beitou area), cause if the peaks are covered in clouds you won't see a thing up there (and it will most likely rain). So better choose a bright and shiny day without clouds (and bring sun protection).
At Xiaoyoukeng you can go to the large and well-known sulphur pit close to the visitor center (not in the video, cause of battery emptiness).

Travel in Taiwan (Nov./Dec. 2015)
Over twenty volcanoes, a similar number of steaming hot-spring sources, and large areas of impenetrable wilderness covered in tall grass or forests of bamboo and many other tree species make Yangmingshan a remarkable national park by any standards. Most remarkable of all, though, is that its stunning volcanic mountains lie just outside the urban core of Taipei City, within striking distance from the center of the metropolis.
Yangmingshan National Park (ymsnp.gov.tw) covers an area of over 11,000 hectares, and has a rich variety of landscapes, so there’s a lot to explore. The plethora of trails can keep both serious hikers and casual walkers busy for many weekends.
A hike to the highest point in the volcanic group, Mt. Qixing (1,120 meters), is a great introduction to the national park, since most of the attractions that make the place so special can be seen here – the remains of a volcanic crater, steaming fumaroles, hot-spring sources and pools, and rich flora and fauna. It’s a hike of an hour or two to the top (depending on the trail chosen and your fitness), along clear, stone-surfaced trails, and although steep in places the walk lies within the reach of most walkers. Certainly the view from the top (weather permitting) is well worth the effort: an incredible 360-degree panorama over the national park, the sea beyond, and (to the south) the Taipei Basin.
This trail starts at the Xiaoyoukeng car park, and before starting the long haul to the top a quick detour along a short trail to the edge of the huge, steaming gash in the side of Mt. Qixing is de rigueur. Sulfur-rich steam escaping to the surface through cracks has eaten away at the rock here and created a huge, crumbling gash in the mountainside.
Leaving the car park, the trail to the summit of Mt. Qixing immediately dives into the arrow bamboo and silvergrass that covers the exposed northern face of the mountain, and climbs up around the edge of Xiaoyoukeng. Near the top of the gash the trail draws close to the brink for a spell, then strikes left up a grassy valley, passing several much smaller steaming fumaroles.
The path continues upwards, passing pretty little Seven Stars Pond, located in a deep depression on the left. A little further on, take a right at a junction to a wooden viewing platform and enjoy a breather while absorbing the magnificent view. After a final short, steep climb, the path emerges onto the summit ridge, crosses a hollow filled with arrow bamboo, and zigzags up to the main and east peaks of Mt. Qixing.
Allow plenty of time to gape at the incredible views from both summits before tackling the descent, which drops steeply off the east peak, with magnificent views towards the grassy heights of Qingtiangang and beyond.
Getting There
Getting to Yangmingshan and the trailheads for Mt. Qixing is quick and easy from the center of Taipei. Simply take either bus R5 (from MRT Jiantan Station) or bus 260 (from Taipei Main Station) to the Yangmingshan terminus, and change there to minibus 108, which travels along a long loop around the center of the national park, encircling Mt. Qixing and passing the trailheads of all three routes to the summit – from the national park visitor center, Xiaoyoukeng, and Lengshuikeng. You can also take bus S15, which connects MRT Jiantan Station with Lengshuikeng on the east side of Mt. Qixing.

Scientists discover magma chamber under Datun Mountain
Scientists have discovered a chamber of pressurized molten rock 12 kilometers below Taipei’s Datun Mountain. Their findings indicate that the chamber is a quarter of the size of Taipei itself, but the Central Weather Bureau shot down suggestions that Datun was an active volcano, saying it was still too early to say whether the magma was moving enough to pose a risk of eruption in the future. Scientists have brought forward new evidence showing that Datun Mountain, which last erupted an estimated 5,000 years ago, is located above a large, subterranean pool of liquid rock, or magma, suggesting it may still be an active volcano. Detected by seismic wave analysis, the magma chamber is located 12 kilometers underneath New Taipei’s Jinshan and Wanli Districts, an area with many hot springs. The magma chamber covers the equivalent of a quarter of Taipei’s land area, and the study concludes that a large eruption from Datun Mountain could cause destruction stretching from Yangmingshan National Park to Taipei’s Shilin, Tianmu, and Beitou Districts.Lin Cheng-horngAcademia Sinica Institute of Earth SciencesThe ultimate objective was to gauge the size of the eruption. A large enough eruption could affect not just Taipei but all of northern Taiwan.Prof. Chen Wen-shanNTU Department of GeosciencesIn the last million years, eruptions of either magma or volcanic ash have been confined to the area around Datun Mountain. We have not found any evidence of magma or ash eruptions in the Taipei area itself. The Central Weather Bureau said a determination over whether the magma chamber was active or dormant was yet to be made, but stated that it was premature to be discussing a volcanic eruption, given that magma levels are only considered dangerous when they rise to a depth of 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface.
Taiwan | Beitou Geothermal Valley (地熱谷) / Hell Valley / Jade Springs Valley | Taipei Hot Springs
Beitou Thermal Valley is a volcanic crater filled with steaming natural sulfuric hot spring water. The springs at Thermal Valley have the highest temperatures in the Datun Mountains area, giving off an eerie sulfuric steam that rises from the surface of the pond that plays around in the breeze. The sight of the steam rising off the surface of the water is quite surreal and beautiful. The eerie steam is also the reason for the area’s other nickname, Hell Valley. The magical translucent green colored waters gave rise to one of its pet names, Jade Springs Valley. The mineral composition of the rare green sulfur spring waters can only be found in two locations in the world, here in Beitou and in Akita, Japan. Despite being the hottest spring in the area, it is said that the residual heat source is insufficient to sustain another volcanic eruption, so the valley’s days may be numbered.
Guanyinshan (觀音山) & Bali (八里), Wugu, Taiwan, 03/13/2011
Guanyinshan is on the west bank of the Danshui River, with the main mountain chain between Wugu and Bali Districts in New Taipei City. It is a young extinct cone-shaped volcano, part of the Datun mountain group. Its north slope is mainly lava while the south is mainly debris flow deposit. Viewed from Danshui and Guandu areas, the mountain looks like Guanyin Buddha lying on her back, hence the name.
Guanyinshan is the home of many species of raptor and is also visited by many migratory birds of prey.

Taipei 4K - Beitou Hot Springs and How to Get There - Taipei Travel Vlog
Taipei Travel Vlog. Taipei 4K Videos. We are in Taipei, Taiwan and in this video we focus on the Beitou Hot Springs (in Chinese 北投溫泉) and how to get there! The Beitou Hot Springs or Beitou Thermal Valley are Taipei attractions (Top Taipei Attractions) and are located relatively close to the Taipe City Center so they are easily reached as a day excursion or a visit for just a few hours.
In thi video we show you how to get to Xinbeitou Beitou by using the Taipei MRT. Our MRT Train jouney bean at Zhongshan MRT Station (the location of our Taipei hotel).
- Take the Taipei MRT Red Line towards Tamsui Station.
- Before Tamsui Station, jump off the train at Beitou Station.
- At Beitou Station change train platforms to the train going to Xinbeitou Station.
When you get to Xinbeitou , exit the station and from there all the tourist attractions and directions to them are all ell marked and easy to find.
Attractions include the Beitou Hot Spring Museum (closed for renovations until October 2018), the Taipei Public Library, the Xinbeitou Historic Station, the Thermal Valley, the Outdoor Public Hot Spring, the Plum Garden, the Ketagalan Culture Center and the Yangmingshan National Park located 30 to 40 minutes from Xinbeitou by bus.
FROM THE SIGN AT THE THERMAL VALLEY:
1. Beitou Thermal Valley is 3,500 square meters, a depression formed before the volcano eruption. The hot spring here may reach over 90°C in some areas, and is the hottest spring in Datun Volcano Group. It was open to public to cook eggs and a lot of scalding issues occured and the hot spring was also contaminated. In 1993, the Taipei City Council decided this place should be administered as other water sources.
2. The hot spring comes from deep inside the volcano, and it is acidified with volcanic gas. The hot water rises to the earth surface and mixes with surface water to form the hot spring. It is called green sulfur as the water is light green, like jade, and contains a lot of sulfate minerals and traces of radium, a radioactive matter. After a long period of sedimentation, it crystalizes on the rock bed of Beitou Stream. It is then called hokutolite, Beitou Rock in Chinese, which is the only rare mineral named after a place name in Taiwan. It is only discovered in Beitou and Tamagawa Hot Spring in Senboku, Japan. Parts of Beitou Stream have been designated as Hokutolite Nature Reserve and public access is prohibited. The hokutolite is on display in Beitou Hot Spring Museum and Beitou Thermal Valley.
3. It is said the green sulfur spring has healing and rehabilitation effects. The hot spring is available to hot spring users in Xinbeitou and the Beitou Public Hot Spring, commissioned by Taipei Water Department.

Wiki writes about Beitou, Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word Kipatauw, meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs.[1] In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan...

TAIWAN VLOG #2: traditional taiwanese open air market tour
I took some quick video snapshots of the Beitou outdoor market and put it into this short video. I have no idea what half of the vegetables and dried things are that were being sold. Also, you can't hear them, but those vendors have some darn good lungs. Overall a very lively experience to say the least!

Old Style Home in Taipei, Taiwan
In Taiwan, there are many homes that were build using an older architectural style. This style usually includes multiple floors with a central area near the kitchen that spans multiple floors. This central area is a big empty section that sometimes reaches all the way to the sky with no cover, or with just a light cover. Older houses rarely exceed 2-3 floors due to Taiwan being an earthquake frequent area.

YangMingShan (陽明山), Taipei, Taiwan, 8/13/2014
Yangmingshan (陽明山) National Park as we know it today covers mountainous areas in the Taipei City districts of Shilin and Beitou, and in the New Taipei City districts of Tamsui, Sanzhi, Shimen, Jinshan and Wanli. The park's eastern boundary lies east of Mt. Huangtsui and Mt. Wuchih, and it extends westward as far as the western foothills of Mt. Hunglu and Mt. Miantian. To the north it includes Mt. Zhuzi and Tudigong Ridge, while its southern boundary stretches from the southern foothills of Mt. Shamao eastward to Pingdeng Village and Shuangxi. It covers a total area of 11,338 hectares with elevations of between 200 and 1120 meters above sea level.
Looking north from Taipei City, the range of mountains you can see in the distance fringing the Taipei basin from left to right, Mt. Xiangtian, Mt. Miantian, Mt. Datun, Mt. Xiaoguanyin and Mt. Qixing are the heart of Yangmingshan National Park. The park is famous for its unique volcanic geology and topographical sights, with signs of volcanic activity like fumaroles and hot springs everywhere. It's easy to reach from Taipei, just one hour by bus. Due to its accessibility for the people of northern Taiwan, on weekends and holidays the park attracts countless hikers and other visitors who come to enjoy the scenery.
Yangmingshan National Park 陽明山
Yangmingshan National Park is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan, located between Taipei and New Taipei City. The districts that house parts of the park grounds include Taipei's Beitou and Shilin Districts; and New Taipei's Wanli, Jinshan and Sanzhi Districts. The National Park is famous for its cherry blossoms, hot springs, sulfur deposits, fumaroles, venomous snakes, and hiking trails, including Taiwan's tallest dormant volcano, Seven Star Mountain (1,120 m).
This mountain range was originally called Grass Mountain (Chinese: 草山; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chháu-soaⁿ) during the Qing Dynasty, in reference to Datun Mountain (大屯山; Tōa-tūn-soaⁿ). Officials during this period were worried about thieves stealing sulfur from the rich sulfur deposits in the area so they would regularly set fire to the mountain. Thus, only grass and not trees could be seen.
Daiton National Park (Japanese: 大屯国立公園), Taiwan's first national park, was one of three National Parks designated by Governor-General of Taiwan Seizō Kobayashi during Japanese rule in 1937.
In 1950, President Chiang Kai-shek, in order to commemorate the Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming renamed the Grass Mountain to Yangmingshan. In 1962, the then Taiwan Provincial Bureau of Public Works began to plan the Yangmingshan National Park. The initial planning area was 28,400 hectares, including Mount Guanyin and the Tatun Volcano Group.
