Phnom Penh Vlog | Cambodia | Travel in Your Twenties
My first time experiencing CAMBODIA! Jess and I visited Phnom Penh for 4 days, as we really wanted to go to the Killing Fields and S21 Museum - we had both studied Pol Pot and the Khmer Rogue regime at school. We knew it was going to be very hard and emotional and we braced ourselves for it, and it was - seriously heartbreaking. The killing fields were ok, it was the S-21 Museum that got me - rows and rows of photographs of frightened, helpless and powerless Cambodians awaiting their torture at the S-21 prison (now turned into the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum). Had to sit outside - that's why there isn't much footage of it in here! An emotionally draining day but something I think everyone should visit and become aware of - to stop something like this ever happening again.

Princess Bopha Devi on the 'Apsara Mera' Classical Khmer Ballet (Cambodia news in Khmer)
The Royal Khmer Classical Ballet troupe performed 'Apsara Mera' in Europe in October 2010. During rehearsals at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Princess Bopha Devi, the troupe's patron and Cambodia's former culture minister, explained how she and other teachers 'reconstructed' the ancient story for dance. Bopha Devi is the most prominent daughter of Norodom Sihanouk, the former king of Cambodia. VOA Khmer's Sarita Nuch and Brian Calvert report from Phnom Penh.

CAMBODIAN NIGHTLIFE in SIEM REAP Pubstreet Market
Walking through Pub Street and Siem Reap Night Market...
Pub Street is a few blocks in the center of Siem Reap that is PACKED with bars and vendors. It's a little crazy and VERY LOUD. Definitely not my most favorite part of Siem Reap but you definitely should atleast go check it out if you're visiting Siem Reap.

Phnom Penh’s not only the capital of Cambodia but it's also been labeled the pearl of Asia.
So it's got a little bit of pressure on it as a tourist destination; but it is so much fun.
On one hand you have the energetic pulse of a big city but on the other hand it's super laid back, so really easy to explore, especially if you know my mate Nuang here.
“Onward my friend”
Today Scenic have us exploring Phnom Penh and what better way than on a local Cyclo.
David “This is the way to travel”
The tour takes you around to all the key spots while you just take in the serenity.
What you have to love about this is that all the hard work is already done for you.
If history is your thing then this is going to be your number one stop on your Scenic Cyclo tour; this is the National Museum and it's got these unbelievable artifacts.
This one here is the King's urn and it used to house his body before he got cremated, but apparently he can stay in here for up to four five months.
Some of the country's most amazing stories are displayed in the museum, from the 4th century right through to modern day.
But to see the real grandeur of what Phnom Penh has to offer, it's off to the Royal Palace.
The Palace is still the main residence of the King but he has opened the doors so that everyone can enjoy its magic.
Dating back over a hundred and fifty years it gives you a chance to enjoy some of the finer elements of Cambodia’s history.
Although tourism has been a shining light for Cambodia, her recent past does have quite a dark side.
The Khmer Rouge, who you no doubt heard about were an evil and brutal stain on this country's history.
And to get an idea of the impact they had on the Cambodian people you need to come and visit S21 prison and the killing fields.
I will warn you though it is a very emotional experience.
After the Vietnam War this area of Asia was quite fragile and the Khmer Rouge took power and rid the country of anyone who is educated, religious or could possibly have gone up against them.
The result was horrendous.
Nearly a quarter of the population was killed.
S21 prison and the killing fields were just two of the tragic sites and are now the most visited in Cambodia.
The shrines and tributes remind everyone who travels here just how far the country has come in the last 40 years.
The Cambodian people are the heart and soul of this country and Scenic give you every chance to get to know them; they welcome you in with open arms and are so proud to show travelers their traditions and way of life.
It's that hospitality that makes this country such a beautiful place to visit.
My Uncle from Cambodia, where he lives in Thailand
VLOG 328 01/25 Day 2 of my Return to Cambodia series...we do a little exploring around the province, Samut Prakan, where my cousin lives. This area is mainly factories and warehouses and the migrant workers from Cambodia that work there. I learned that there are a lot of Khmer people from the village that I'll be staying at later on in my trip. We spent the day eating and talking, so not a whole lot of action, but it was good to catch up with my bongbros

My trip to Cambodia on October 2017 - Day 8
Day 8 - It was my first time visiting Banteay Chhmar located in the Banteay Meanchey Province. This Temple, at one time, was an amazing sight – the beautiful carvings on the wall of the temple and many stone sculptures lining up at the entrance gate as well. As I was carefully walking through a small carving gate tunnel, then climbing up to the middle of the temple site, sadly, I discovered many piles of stones that they were originally belonging to the sculptures and the walls of the temple. Some of the stones were deteriorated due to the weather condition and some were broken apart. This temple has been neglected and has faced much destruction throughout the wars for many years. It is a heartbreaking to see such historical site is in ruins. There weren’t many tourists coming to visit this temple as many as in Angkor Wat.
Time was getting late, and everyone was hungry; therefore, we decided to end our tour and went to have our lunch at a local restaurant located only a few miles away from this temple. The place was a little quiet when we got there. We sat down and picked out our order for a spicy sweet and sour soup, some fried fermented catfish with a side vegetable, local special paddy herb soup, and finally a big bottle of SINGHA Thai beer for three of us. It was quite the lunch and surprisingly, the local special paddy herb soup was the most delicious thing I had ever eaten. Once we finished our lunch, everyone slouched into the hammock and relaxed by swinging it side to side. Fifteen minutes later, the waitress came to collect our bill and it came out to less than $8. We left the restaurant and headed back home to Banteay Meanchey.
GBIS Charity Event for Kuntha Bopha Hospital at TK Avenue
Golden Bridge international School is a great school at Toul Kork area behind Acleda Training Center at Phnom Penh City in Cambodia. I sent my son and daughter to this school cuz i trust them in leading my kids across the golden bridge to the bright future. Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Part 2) #soloadventuresofneena
This was pretty much an impromptu trip.
Two days into my nine days annual leave, I have yet to decide on a vacation.
I know I want to have a fruitful holiday.
A trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life with all the harmful shopping and I want to learn something out of these nine days.
My (Oh-So-Busy) mother decided to cancel her tickets leaving her only daughter a solo backpack vacation to Cambodia.
I'm glad she didn't tag along (She agreed on this).
On the 30/07/2014 afternoon, I decided to book a ticket to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Rushing to grab all the information I can for this trip, I was lucky to have a friend who recently visited this place and he introduced me to a fellow Cambodian friend who opened a hotel in Cambodia. (Angkor Orchid Central Hotel)
It has always been a dream to visit Siem Reap, Cambodia.
And on 31/7/2014, I had my first check on my bucket list.

CAMBODIA: FORMER KHMER ROUGE TORTURER DUTCH FOUND
Eng/Khmer/Nat
One of the bloodiest of all Khmer Rouge figures has been found after twenty years on the run.
Kang Kek Ieu, better known by his revolutionary name Duch, was the head of Pol Pot's secret police.
As commandant of the notorious S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, he is alleged to have personally ordered the torture and murder of up to twenty thousand people.
Now he says he's a born-again Christian who's willing to stand trial for past crimes.
If he chooses to speak, Duch could also provide crucial information about other top Khmer Rouge figures who are currently trying to evade justice.
These are the first television pictures of a man whose cruelty has became part of the Khmer Rouge legend.
They were shot last month on the Thai-Cambodia border.
When confronted he admitted his identity, and his part in the genocide, and expressed deep remorse.
UPSOUND: (English)
I have (had) a difficult life. Now I decide to be a Christian. I consecrate my life to Christ. Christ.
SUPER CAPTION: Kang Kek Ieu, alias Duch, former Khmer Rouge torturer
If true, it's an astonishing conversion.
This is Kang Kek Ieu today, and this was him as Duch, head of the Santebal, Pol Pot's internal security machine.
It was a role he relished.
Tuol Sleng, or S-21 prison in Phnom Penh was his personal kingdom.
Here, Duch is alleged to have zealously overseen the torture of up to twenty thousand men, women and children.
They were beaten and electrocuted until they confessed to being enemies of the state.
Most, undoubtedly, were not.
Today, their prison mugshots line the walls of Tuol Sleng, now the Museum of Genocide.
Every one of them was photographed.
The inmates themselves perished, almost to a man.
They either died under interrogation or here in a field outside the city, where black-clad murder squads made them dig their own graves, then literally smashed them to pieces with iron bars or farming tools.
Scraps of cloth and bone still litter the ground today.
Artist Vann Nath is one of only seven survivors of Tuol Sleng.
He was saved only because Duch put him to work, painting portraits of Pol Pot.
When shown a current photograph, he recognised his former overlord instantly.
UPSOUND: Duch
Vann Nath recalled how he would physically shake with fear in Duch's presence.
But now he says his feelings have dissipated, and he just wants to forget him.
SOUNDBITE: (Khmer)
Frankly speaking I don't want to hear or know about this bunch anymore, and I certainly don't want to see them. Nor do I want to think about where they are, or where they live.
SUPER CAPTION: Vann Nath, S-21 survivor
Duch fled Phnom Penh in 1979, when the Vietnamese ousted Pol Pot.
It was the last anyone knew of him.
He was found by chance by British photographer Nic Dunlop who's been fascinated by the mystery of Duch for years.
Dunlop recognised him straight away, and was amazed by his candour.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
After it became clear to him that we knew who he was, without actually saying so directly, he was very forthcoming, very direct. He was not trying to shift the blame to other people. He was not trying to shift the blame to other people, unlike a lot of Khmer Rouge who have done so in the past. He was very forthcoming with information about what had happened, and his role in it.
SUPER CAPTION: Nic Dunlop, photographer
And Duch documented that role meticulously.
Among the Tuol Sleng archives there are literally thousands of prisoners' confessions, bearing Duch's signature, and recommendations.
This is a death warrant for 17 prisoners, from May 1978.
More than half of them were children.
Beside their names, Duch wrote Kill them all.

11. Support crew member waiting on ground for helicopter
12. Mid of helicopter on the ground, man in passenger seat gives a 'thumbs down' sign indicating search mission was unsuccessful
STORYLINE
Cambodian search and rescue teams were on Tuesday no closer to locating the wreckage of a passenger plane that crashed in a fierce storm in southern Cambodia, more than 30 hours after it disappeared.
On the second day of searching several searchers in helicopters set out after a rain storm cleared, scouring a stretch of dense jungle and mountainous terrain, but returned with no further clues as to where the plane may be located.
Hundreds of troops on the ground are searching in addition to air searches.
Cambodian military Commander in Chief General Ke Kim Yan said the difficult terrain was hampering rescue efforts.
From yesterday until now there is no information on the location of the site. No one can get there to look because it's difficult country, he told reporters.
Search teams are set to begin again at first light on Wednesday, weather permitting.
On Tuesday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called on the United States to use its high-tech surveillance satellites to help search for the downed plane.
PMT Air plane, a Russian-made An-24 was flying from Siem Reap, Cambodia's main tourist hub where the famous Angkor Wat temple complex is located, to Sihanoukville on the coast when it disappeared on Monday.
Hun Sen said there was a high probability the plane crashed into jungle covered mountains as it was descending to land in Sihanoukville, the plane's scheduled destination.
He expressed little hope of finding survivors among the 22 people on board, among them South Korean and Czech tourists.
The operation is basing itself in Kampot but the exact location of the crash site is still unknown.
One Civil Aviation official said on Monday that the aircraft was thought to have crashed between Kamchay and the Bokor mountains in Kampot province.
The province's governor, said the government will give a 5-thousand US dollar reward for any villager who can lead rescuers to the crash site.
PMT Air is a small Cambodian airline that began flying from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville in January.

Siem Reap Cambodia / Tourist Destination - History and Origin
The name Siem Reap can be translated to mean Defeat of Siam (siem in Khmer), and is commonly taken as a reference to an incident in the centuries-old conflict between the Siamese and Khmer kingdoms, although this is probably apocryphal. According to oral tradition, King Ang Chan (1516–1566) had named the town Siem Reap, meaning the defeat of Siam, after he repulsed an army sent to invade Cambodia by the Thai King Maha Chakkraphat in 1549. However, scholars such as Michael Vickery consider this derivation to be simply a modern folk etymology, and maintain that while the names Siem Reap and Chenla (old Chinese name for Cambodia) may perhaps be related, the actual origin of the name is unknown.
The traditional tale claims that King Ang Chan of Cambodia tried to assert greater independence from Siam, which was then going through internal struggles. The Siamese King Chairacha had been poisoned by his concubine, Lady Sri Sudachan, who had committed adultery with a commoner, Worawongsathirat, while the king was away leading a campaign against the Kingdom of Chiang Mai. Sudachan then placed her lover on the throne. The Thai nobility lured them outside the city on a royal procession by barge to inspect a newly discovered white elephant. After killing the usurper, along with Sudachan and their newly born daughter, they invited Prince Thianracha to leave the monkhood and assume the throne as King Maha Chakkraphat (1548–1569). With the Thais distracted by their internal problems, King Ang Chan decided the time was right to attack. He seized the Siamese city of Prachin Buri in 1549, sacking the city and making slaves of its inhabitants. Only then did he learn that the succession had been settled and that Maha Chakkkraphat was the new ruler. Ang Chan immediately retreated to Cambodia, taking his captives with him. King Maha Chakkraphat was furious over the unprovoked attack, but Burma had also chosen to invade through the Three Pagodas Pass. The Burmese army posed a much more serious threat, as it captured Kanchanaburi and Suphanburi. It then appeared before Ayutthaya itself.
