Shirley Bassey - Almost Like Being In Love - This Can't Be Love (Medley) (1990 Live in Yokohama)
1990 (Big Band style arrangements were made for Shirley's powerfully rich voice. Bassey is the bridge between older & younger generations as she can sing and has recorded many genres of music over her 59 years in the business. This lady turned 75 this year and her voice is still as powerful as ever, and she is still performing and recording! Such a full-out orchestral arrangement would drown out most singers, but not Bassey. This is 'old style' entertainment at its very best!
ABOUT this song:
Almost Like Being in Love is a popular song published in 1947. The music was written by Frederick Loewe, and the lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.
The song was made popular by David Brooks and Marion Bell in the musical Brigadoon. It was later performed in the 1954 film version by Gene Kelly.
The song was revived in a downbeat ballad version by singer Michael Johnson (#32, 1978). This song was also made popular by British singing sensation Dame Shirley Bassey, Nat King Cole recorded more than one version of the song. Other singers who have recorded Almost Like Being in Love include Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. A later version by Nat King Cole was used as the closing song in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day which starred Bill Murray.
LYRICS:
What a day this has been
What a rare mood I'm in
Why, it's almost like being in love
There's a smile on my face
For the whole human race
Why, it's almost like being in love
And the music of life seems to be
Like a bell that is ringing for me
And from the way that I feel
When that bell starts to peal
Well it's almost like being in love
And the music of life seems to be
Like a bell that is ringing for me
And from the way that I feel
When that bell starts to peal
Well it's almost like being in love

Our Shirley Valentine Summer, will see Melinda Messenger, Sian Lloyd, Nancy Dell’Olio, Aggie MacKenzie, Ninia Benjamin, Lizzie Cundy, Annabel Giles and Ingrid Tarrant, escape to a Greek island for the summer – rediscovering themselves and even looking for love. Under the glow of the Mediterranean sun the cast will live together under one roof, as they discover the islands, the challenges of communal living and the ups and downs of dating.
They are all single and at a crossroads in their lives. All of them harbour a passion to try something new or pursue long held dreams in an attempt to transform their lives, for the better. Sharing a desire to work out what to do with the next chapter of their lives, some want the opportunity to learn a new skill or test drive a new career.
Each of the ladies has a personal goal, for example, overcoming a marriage breakdown, losing weight, building self-confidence and many of them will spend time dating. For some, it could be their first date in a decade, whilst others are looking for someone special to spend the rest of their lives with.
From the makers of The Real Marigold Hotel, Twofour, this feel good series captures the beauty of the Greek Islands: the people, the colours and the way of life, as this group of brave women explore what else life can offer them.

Shirley Bassey ft Geoff Love & His Orchestra - As Long As He Needs Me (Columbia Records 1960)
As Long as He Needs Me is a torch song sung by the character of Nancy in the musical film Oliver!, and originally introduced in the 1960 musical by Georgia Brown, who was the first actress to play Nancy. It is a love ballad expressing Nancy's love for her criminal boyfriend Bill Sikes, despite his mistreatment of her. The song was written by Lionel Bart.
A reprise of this song towards the end of the show expresses Nancy's affection for young Oliver Twist, implying that she now feels that the child also needs her. This reprise was omitted from the film version.
The song has also been sung as As Long as She Needs Me, when sung by a male singer. Its popularity grew by virtue of renditions by several popular singers, including Lionel Bart and Shirley Bassey who reached number two for 5 weeks on the United Kingdom charts with the song. Bassey's recording became one of the highest sellers of 1960 staying on the UK charts for 30 weeks, and is still heard regularly playing in the background on the TV show EastEnders. The song was performed by Nadia Turner and Melinda Doolittle on American Idol.
Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, is a Welsh singer. She found fame in the mid-1950s and has been called one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain during the last half of the 20th century. In the US, in particular, she is best known for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979).
As long as he needs me
I know where I must be
I'll cling on steadfastly
As long as he needs me
As long as life is long
I'll love him, right or wrong
And somehow I'll be strong
As long as he needs me
If you are lonely then you will know
When someone needs you, you love them so
I won't betray his trust
Though people say I must
I've got to stay true just
As long as he needs me
If you are lonely then you will know
When someone needs you, you love them so
I won't betray his trust
Though people say I must
I've got to stay true just
As long as he needs me

True Love and Apple Pie - SUSAN SHIRLEY (ie: I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing)
Original version of the very first related song to Buy The World A Coke and written by Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway (David and Jonathan). Amended version released by The New Seekers and also by The Hillside Singers, to name just a few! This version by Susan ended in a nasty copyright claim against 'the real thing' amended version. I was told many years ago by manager Harry Barter. Hope you enjoy my remix version of the this video.
